How windy is too windy for you ?

Since the temperature is 50 I could deal with the 20-30 mph wind, but up here it has been high 30s low 40s degrees, so any wind over 10 mph is no bueno.

It’s not the effect the wind has on the ball that bothers me, but getting sick when it’s windy on top of cold.

So league starts this weekend and the forecast on Saturday is 50's with wind in the 20-30mph range. I don't mind playing in temps down to 40 degrees if it's not windy but 20 mph winds is tough.

I wish that USTA & USTA Leagues would adopt the same policy as the ITA. 25mph sustained winds and the match is rescheduled. I played a league match in the wind that caused the ball to be out unless each of us hit with in a 5ft window. The match took 3 hours and I won in straight sets. It was a war of attrition. To add insult to injury, the temo was steadily dropping during the match and I sick with a cold for a week afterwards.

< 20mph: Game on
> 25mph: No way
in between: confer with opponent. Likely cancel.

Wind is my least favorite condition but I suppose that's true for most people. The difference is that it doesn't seem to bother me as much as most.

15mph club here, over that and it changes things. Helps my game since I have the ability to finesse crazy lefty shots, but that doesn't translate into fun.

A lot depends on the wind direction, however, any cross wind or swirly over 18mph is probably waste of time for me.
Temps under 55F are not comfortable because strings are not responsive, balls are stiff and layered clothing + sweating + any wind chill...no thank you

Wind is funny. The crazy amount the ball can go sideways is amazing, and if the wind is end to end, the adjustment hitting into vs with the wind is a real challenge.

There is one court near me which is open and in a slight depression. 10 mph wind funnels into the court, it's like 20mph.
Another court had trees on 3 sides, 20 mph wind was barely noticable...but now all the trees on the west were removed, so now the wind blows thru like an open door.

I'd imagine your league is basically waiting for that first person to raise the wind issue, and then everyone else will chime in and agree to reschedule. I'd go ahead and email the league.

while it's not fun, it's great footwork training...

lol some locals were calling me a wuss for wanting to play indoors when temps were sub 40F :P
i'm in shorts when it's 50F :P

Up to around 10 mph is annoying but playable. Start getting into the high teens and it get very annoying and really affects points to me. Over 20mph is "just laugh a lot and hope for the best".

-anything north of 10mph is a no go for me
-here in Virginia, wind chill can wreck a perfectly good sunny tennis day, specially in the winter months
-today i got to hit outside in the low to mid 40s (temp), but NO WIND_CHILL!! ,(1-2mph) perfect

I can deal with 20-25 mph if it's warm. I hate it but look at it as a challenge. If it's under 55F, then it's miserable for me.

Wind + cold = no go for me. Not even fun to play in weather like that. I like hot and humid weather for tennis, makes the balls lively, more spin, just feels better. Cold weather takes all the bounce away and my strings feel stiff as heck.

Fitty MPH! Played in that wind at a park with 10 courts, over 100 degrees F. Bettah pack balls o'plenty.

Outdoor tennis sucks!!! With sun/wind/distractions hot humid and muggy weather I hate it!!! Seriously considering not playing anymore because of this. If it’s 85 outside I’d rather be at lake or beach instead

No way!!!! Not a chance!! As I said many times before-you need to be in shape to play in those conditions not play to get in shake. Thinking of quitting tennis as karate has me interested instead. Work on self defense/getting into shape with mind body and spirit

Still in Vegas?

Depends on temperature.

There's windy because it's too windy - the force of the wind is disrupting play too much - no matter the temperature. Not sure what that is for me - 25 mph?

And then there's windy because it makes it too cold - which is obviously a sliding scale of how windy based on what the temperature is. Since I don't play when it's super cold, temps in the 40s and 50s would be where wind as it relates to temperature would be the biggest issue.

God help us if they put us on the top courts out there.

Are we all in America here? I assume we are talking about Fahrenheit. 30•F is miserable unless you’re playing ice hockey.
I just got back from a failed hit @40•F because the wind was swirling and biting. 20 mph in your face is ugly. After half an hour we called it quits.

30C is no picnic either [86F].

Hehe, i actually welcome wind in that. I grew up playing by the Atlantic Ocean. So it was plenty windy during some humid, sweltering days. As mentioned early, it is great for working on footwork. It’s good to practice in it if you are a tournament or league player, you want to be able to play in the elements. Sun is another one. I love when people complain about the sun.

I don't mind serving into the sun, especially if my partner hates the sun but has a better serve otherwise. I can usually get around the bad spot by altering my toss/stance; it compromises my serve but I don't have a big serve to begin with.

The direction of the wind matters also. I struggle more with crosswinds and swirling winds rather than wind blowing from behind the baseline on one side. A 10-15mph crosswind or swirling wind is worse than a 20mph wind in one direction from the baseline for me.

I have to serve and hit more conservatively in a crosswind and so the tennis is less fun.

Well we played in 25 to 30mph sustained winds with gusts up to 50mph. The other captain insisted we play. Was a day of shortened strokes and lots of spin. We won in the match tiebreak, in fact all of our doubles won in match tiebreaks. All things being equal we would most likely have all won in relatively easy straight sets. The wind blows.

You played on Saturday? It was absolute insane here in ATX. Completely unplayable IMO.
Sunday turned out gorgeous. Cool, sunny, and no wind.

Where I am at in North Texas is always windy in the spring which is right in the middle of spring tournament season for high schools. I've had to teach my kids how to adjust and play in 15mph+ winds because that is effectively our norm. It's far from ideal and I hate that we have to play in it because we can get gusts of 20-40 at any time. But that's the devil we deal with.

Maybe you picked the wrong sport - worth a thought.
I agree with you!!! Thinking of quitting tennis to do karate! Need to lose weight get back into shape/lean/cut and ripped-tennis isn’t doing this. Got to fathow the f—k do you get fat playing tennis?
