He had some great wins in 2019 against 3 ATG players. Beating Fed and Nole on HC and Rafa on clay is an awesome achievement. No need to diminish those accomplishments.
1) He's always been able to beat Rafa on clay outside RG. Winning IW had nothing to do with beating him at Barcelona last year.

2) He continues to keep scoring big wins but not finish the job (London, Melbourne). The same problem he's had for years now. Again, no difference post-IW.

Just look at his record against Federer and Djokovic this year. He is the only one who can beat them consistently. I think your first point is very valid, but the second point at least proves that he is getting more of those opportunities.

Reaching the AO final with an opportunity to beat Novak was definitely a new opportunity that I guess I'll give him credit for. The QF win over Rafa that allowed him to get there is not a match he could have won 2 or 3 years ago.

But the other 2019 meetings with Fed & Nole came in Madrid QF/SF, the RG semis and the round-robin stages of the YEC. Not exactly new ground for him.

Thanks for posting.

Reading these and rewatching Pete vs Andre 2001 is helping with IW withdrawal.

Good read. When I opened the article I expected it to be about the WTA since the last 2 champions won Indian Wells and then had it skyrocket their careers.

Both the 2018 and 2019 champs had never won a title in their careers going into their tournament. They then won Indian Wells and funnily enough both of them went on to win the US Open in the same year.

2018 champ Naomi Osaka ended up getting to #1 and won the Aus Open as well while Andreescu got up to #4 and also won the Rogers Cup.

In one year, Thiem has gained the legitimate belief that he can beat anyone, anywhere (maybe not on grass but who knows). He can play all-court tennis and he learned the concept of tactics.
I see him as a totally different player than the pure brute he was. I think the foundation was his incredible match against Nadal at the USO, it must definitely have had open his eyes on his true potential. Indian Wells title definitely confirmed this.

He doesn't have the shark attitude of the big 3, he is a normal guy just like you and me, with a huge level. He cannot have the same mental fortitude and will probably need some external factors to win a slam against Nadal or Djokovic. And these factors can happen. It almost happened. We shouldn't blame a ''boy-next-door'' for not having this winner attitude. The guy is who he is and he gives his best and has the right approach. He is not a whiner or someone who takes time contemplating his fame instead of practicing and sleeping.
