How would you feel if Federer pulled a Sampras - and never played again

After Sampras won the 2002 US Open, he didn't announce his retirement, he pulled out of tournament after tournament and then when he didn't miss playing at Wimbledon in 2003, he officially announced his retirement in August, just prior to the US Open. He chose not to defend his title there, but his retirement announcement was timed so that he could say farewell at a special ceremony organized for him at the Open. At the time of his retirement, many regarded Sampras as the greatest player of all time.

How would you feel if Federer did this?

Luckily there is zero chance of this happening so I don't have to worry about that. Federer took 6 months to play for another 2-3 years, not win a Slam and retire. It's just the best possible start of the last phase of his career.

For me it would feel strange - particularly right near the start of the season with three majors to go. Federer is rejuvenated and it would be odd for him to hang it up with the rest of the year offering further opportunities at all three majors and also masters. Pete was absolutely tormented in the leadup to his retirement, whereas Federer seemed fine before, during and after his AO triumph, so it would suprise me massively.

His current form would make him favourite at this year's wtf imo, provided they follow the grand slam committee's approach to speed up court surfaces slightly, which has pretty much been universally applauded by tennis fans.

If Federer wins the 19th in Wimbledon, he'll anounce his retirement there. That's my feeling.

If he wins his 19th he'll stick around even longer for a 20th. Why retire if you're having multi slam winning years at his age?

HIghliy doubtful that will happen but IF it happens, I'd rather have him announce right away when we the fans are in the happy mood of the 18th. Seeing him pull one out of the other to end his career will be a lame way to end such a great career. People won't like it, I won't like it but again, there'd be no regrets as well.
