Hurricane Florence

The Carolinas are in this big storm's path with expected landfall sometime Thursday. It has been upgraded to a Category 4 storm with winds exceeding 140mph.

More than one million citizens of the two states are subject to mandatory evacuation.

The worst fear is that the storm will stall once it makes landfall and then cause major inland flooding from rainfall exceeding 20 inches.

Two other named storms are developing in the Atlantic behind Florence. To the south, Hurricane Isaac could cause some damage in the Lesser Antilles while Hurricane Helene is not viewed at this time as a threat to make landfall in any populated area.

Hawaii, still not fully recovered from Hurricanes Hector and Lane now faces the development of Hurricane Olivia which could weaken before landfall but still pack tropical storm winds just below the 74mph threshold.

Very sexist, naming your hurricanes after women.

Sad to hear this. I once lived in SC. Wonderful place.

Hurricanes are also named after males.
Storms after women?
Googled this and there’s contradictory information.
Can’t tell.
I believe that both male and female names are bestowed on natural disasters alike.

But Tawm only create threads about female hurricanes not male ones. That is not fair. It happens every time .
I mentioned Hector, Lane and Isaac. You're a thief; you stole my reputation. Say you're sorry! Now! Or I'll put you on iggy and you'll never work a thread of mine again! I don't care if I donut have a dotter. You owe me an apology! You're homophonic!

No. That is Suris jogging speed.

You mean there is a chance of having a Hurricane Sewretch?
It's rare we get to the "S" letter...Sandy was the last one but she was a bad one in late October 2012. Sewretch will have to be a doozy to top Sandy.

the weather guy said wind will be like 40 mph when it makes landfall. is that dangerous ?
I think you misheard, 140 is more like it. When it gets into the center of NC, winds will drop, but even then they'll be well over 40 for some time. I'm glad my oldest daughter no longer lives in Wilmington, NC.

I'd really like a Cat 5 to hit at 26° 40′ 37″ N, 80° 2′ 13″ W
My GPS reads your target but at this time of year he's more likely hanging at 40.6693 N 74.6804 W. The humidity down here in FL is too much for his hairspray.

Strangely 2 people today told me they are evacuating to Florida for the duration of this. Seems somewhat ironic. Like rain on your wedding day only more real irony as rain on your wedding day isnt really ironic just bad luck.

Now down to a Cat 2 and predicted to go south so SC and GA are now more threatened.
NC will be on the "bad side" as it meanders slightly southwards.

Myrtle Beach will be a shambles.

Florence bores down on Florence. The Arno will rise over its banks.

Bump for @Gary Duane

I wonder how Florence SC will fair???
I started a thread, didn't see yours. It's so hard to tell what is really going on because of weather hype. You know these guys just love these storms. I'm serious. They get all excited about the wind and power. Some kind of of "force of nature" worship.

But I'm not looking forward to what the storm surge is going to do to marinas.

Worst part will be that the storm is going to stall, which means a LOT of rain.

Flo is flowing and Cary is carrying on. 3QFs complete and a fourth in progress.

Dedication or dereliction of safety concerns???

Are there motels very close to the venue? I'm trying to imagine the logistics of the players and necessary personnel commuting in the weather they will face.
Im not sure, Cary always seems one of these planned communities so I am sure big chains are around. I know a lot of flights are cancelled so they may not get out of the area.

Just below the man's hand, do I see some sort of fire cracker or bomb that has been ignited ?

Take care, jaggy, and be safe.

Myrtle Beach will be a shambles.

:( I've driven through Florence once in 1994, and driven to Myrtle Beach for a day, too. Nice young babes in bikinis. I guess all of them will be in their 40s by now :(
I hope Charleston is safe.
