Hyper G alternative

I know there is already a similar post but I’d like an updated one I hope y’all can help me. Let me give it to you straight..I really like this string I’ve tried it in different racquets and different gauges and I currently like the 16g on my blade 16x19 I am an aggressive baselinner who really benefits from that extra spin and control with my fast racquet head speed swings...I also do believe this string is not perfect I find it difficult to volley with when I come into the net and my serve isn’t that great with it either. I would like to try a very similar string...I read that confidential was an in between tour bite and hyper g string and disagree it definitely does not have the same bite or “liveliness as the hyper g although I have never tried tour bite which is another string I’m looking into I’ve read recommendation from technifibre black code 4s and volkl V-tourque as good alternatives..leaning towards the black code 4s because of the squared shape...I really do like that plastic ish sharp feel I get from hyper g but I cannot tell what the other string feel like with pictures..what do y’all think/suggest?

Try a thinner gauge first - 18G and even 19G is available. I switched from HG18 to HG Soft 18 and for me it is a better string - similar bite/spin, more feel, more control and only slightly less power and longevity.

If you like HyperG 16, I think it's best to stick with it and work on the strokes you have trouble with, rather than change strings to try to solve the problem. I'm of the opinion that there's no such thing as the "perfect string" or "perfect racquet."

Diadem Solstice Power 16L. Switched to it from Hyper G and think it's superior in most categories.
I have been near this string and did get to feel it physically it does seem very much like hyper G although (I know I could get a lot of backlash for saying this) I’d wish to get into a string with more color options

What's your racket and tension? I've hit hyper G at 54 in a bunch of sticks and it has felt good for volleying in heavier, headlight rackets.

Agree as someone that has played with a bunch of rackets and strings over the years. It depends on a ton of factors... I don't really regret switching at different times, it's a game and should be fun!

As others have said, try a thinner Hyper G first; for me, 18 and even 19 doesn't start notching bad until it's also starts to go dead (53 lbs in Gravity Tour) but has much better touch at the net and snap on serves. I'll also back giving Diadem Solstice Power in their thinner gauges a try; not as much touch as Hyper G, but more "action", durable and holds tension forever. But if you string your own, the shape will destroy your fingers on the crosses. Regarding colors, you're talking more boutique strings so color options aren't really there for this class of string.

I'm in agreement with others here, if you want a 'very similar string' try going down a gauge (if you're using 16g I'd try the 17g first), also maybe try bumping the tension down by 3-5 pounds (I realize you didn't say what tension you use but a lot of people I think can benefit from a little looser tension on poly's)

I have tried gauges 16, 16L, 17, 18 and 19 and 18 soft but not 20. It’s a great string don’t get me wrong that’s why I’ve experimented with it so much. I usually stay between 50-54lbs depending on the gauge.

Lynx Tour. Head has explicitly said that they were aiming for something similar to Hyper G when developing Lynx Tour. I do not like Hyper G personally, but I really enjoyed Lynx Tour (although your mileage may vary, I found Hyper G 1.15 to be really stiff)

I just ordered a set of lynx tour I’m looking forward to trying it, I got the 17g, what tension would you recommend on my blade 98 16x19 if I was used to hyper g 16L at 53lbs?

I’d try the same tension - not only to limit your changes to one variable, but also because they’re somewhat similar

Since I really liked the spin potential of the Hyper G and Hyper G Soft, I searched for other strings that are really spin friendly and found - Diadem Solstice Power. Just got a few packs and can’t wait to try it. It seems like this string could even be more spin friendly than the Hyper G.

It is really spinny and the shape makes it more durable, in my experience, since there isn’t as much movement. Not as much feel, but a good string.

There's now a Solstice Black, which supposedly has better tension maintenance. The old Solstice Power wasn't great at tension maintenance and combined with the string wearing smooth moderately quickly, changed playing characteristics over its lifetime. I used this string for a couple of years and compensated by using the 1.35 gauge after finding the thinner gauges didn't last long enough.

Thanks! Just ordered some Diadem Solstice Black.

The Hyper-G 16L has been my go to string for awhile and I kept coming back to it despite trying many other setups. I recently stumbled on a string called Caviar by a small company called Toroline (I know it sounds more like fishing equipment) while reading through some of the threads in this forum and I have a new favorite string. The Caviar has a good amount of bite to it and it feels just a little bit crisper than the Hyper-G. The transition from Hyper-G to Caviar was super easy and I instantly liked it. I've always liked the feel of the Hyper-G but just wanted something a tad bit crisper. I was really excited to try the Confidential when it first came out because it sounded like what I was looking for but I tried it several times in 16L and 17 and I never really liked it. I think I might be in the minority about the Confidential because it seems like a lot of people liked it.

Toroline has a starter pack that includes 4 different strings that they carry for $20. It includes the Absolute (a little to soft and muted for my taste), Super Toro (softer than Caviar and more similar to Hyper-G), a prototype (never tired it) and the Caviar. You can't go wrong at $5/set so might be something worth trying.

Tried Hyper-G 17, hate on my PAT, but loved on my TC 100. I dislike the color so I waiting for weis cannon fire stroke. On paper they have sam 4 sided profile shape and same gauge (1.20mm) that I'm used to hyper-G so I would like to try this hopefully I'll get my package this weekend.

Interesting because I started a thread a few months ago asking about Caviar. My stringer suggested it as a replacement for HyperG as I wanted something with more comfort. Since then, I’ve been playing with HyperG Soft, but feel that it’s lifetime is much lower than HyperG. Maybe it’s time to try Toroline Caviar.

I think that was one of the threads I read prior to trying it. If you are looking for something more comfortable than Hyper-G, the Super Toro or Absolute might be a better fit. Not that the Caviar is harsh by any means but it's comfort is similar to Hyper-G in my opinion. As for the lifetime I find that it's pretty similar to Hyper-G but based on data I've collected in RacquetTune it seems to initially drop tension just a tab bit quicker but levels off like Hyper-G around 11-12% tension loss and holds there until I cut it out.

I got the starter pack and it was a worthwhile experiment for me and I eventually bought a reel of the Caviar. I have a referral code that will save you 20% so DM me if you want it. It never hurts to save a few bucks.

Thanks. I don’t do my own stringing.

Try 48-50 pounds, I used that setup and it was very good.

I’ve been playing with Lynx tour now for a couple of days and I do like the string I can’t say that it is just like hyper G, this string is definitely lower powered and stiffer compared to hyper g and doesn’t bite the ball as good. The odd thing is that this string turned my 16x19 into an 18x20, I’ve never experienced that with a string. Definitely more control but I’ve had to change my swing the way I do with the denser pattern very odd to me but very interesting.

The Head Experimental string became Lynx Tour, and in the TW playtest, your experience was not uncommon.

I was reading some of those reviews and I do agree the string feels thicker than it is, and also agree that I would enjoy it more if they had an 18 or 19 gauge for more bite and feel. I cannot make up my mind if I like the way the string has changed the trajectory of my shots because it does make them more flat and penetrating. I’m going to try the solstice black next, unfortunately I couldn’t find a 17g with free shipping so I’m going to try the 16L. A friend a mine got a diadem racquet that had the teal strings on it and he let me hit with it a bit and that string does have some good bite and feel from what I remember so I’m really looking forward to trying it.

I have a couple of sets of Solstice Black for when our indoor courts reopen. I used Solstice Power for a couple of years as my go-to string. I had to go to a 1.35 thickness to minimize tension loss in a fairly open pattern racquet and it worked well for me. The shape did wear smooth but it came at about the same time that tension really dropped so those two things kind of offset each other and characteristics like launch angle didn't change a whole lot.

When I switched to my current racquet, I tried it in 1.20 thickness and didn't like it. SP felt amazingly harsh when I mis-hit and I didn't have the spin capability I was expecting. But with Diadem's 30% off sale, I thought I'd give it this updated string a go.

Head lynx tour - it can be springy though
Silver Tour 7
Gosen Sidewinder - very underrated
Mayami Big Spin - another underrated string

There are way too many strings out there these days. But here's another one I'm going to toss in the ring as a Hyper-G alternative: Kirschbaum Xplosive Speed. It's a very comfortable shaped poly.

Try HyperG Soft - plays similar to HyperG, but with a different feel. Very similar color also. I switched to HyperG Soft 18 a month ago after using only HyperG for six months before that.

Similar strings to me are spikey shark and ypts. Both in 1.25 gauge and i find more spin/control with these two strings over hyper g. Hyper felt too lively in my opinion and i feel like ypts and spikey shark are lower powered and really bite the ball especially spikey shark.

I play Hyper G Soft 16L in my crosses at 52 lbs. VS Gut in the mains at 55. Its fantastic...superb spin and control to focus the power and feel in the natural gut.

Signum Pro Yellow Jacket
Signum Pro X-Perience

Both are a bit softer than Hyper-G but playability should be somewhat similar. I personally thought Yellow Jacket played more similar to Hyper-G as it's crisp and lively, while X-Perience felt a bit more muted and less lively to me. X-Perience lasted long like Hyper-G, Yellow Jacket didn't.

Hi, I have been stringing for a long time. I have noticed that when I use the HyperG 17g,there seems to be some fuzz, like lint that is at the grommets. I have cleaned the whole area and put a plastic cloth under machine. Is it a coating on string?
Thanks, George

You mean like this?

uc

I've never had that happen with Hyper-G but what I think it is, is the sharp edge scrapes off and forms those lint-like threads as it slides through the grommet when being strung. Come to think of it, the string in the photo, Weiss Cannon Rock 'n Power, is the only string I've had that happen with. The other square strings I've used, Ultra Cable, V-Square, and Cube, did not do that.

I have never had any fraying/fiber issues with Hyper G or Hyper G Soft....I play with 16L at 52 lbs in my crosses. VS Gut in my mains @ 55.
