Stringing the less stiff Cyclone Tour at higher tension to get control makes sense. Check out the TW string comparison chart. Gives you a general idea of most of the more popular strings. According to that chart Hyper G is much stiffer which is the consensus I get from a number of players. Hyper G seems to the better all around string for my purposes but if I had arm problems..would be stringIng up some Cyclone Tour or Weiss Cannon.
We all have our preferences and it is understandable different players will like different setups. Among these five 4.5 men I now string for, three use 1.3mm VCT, one uses Solinco Revolution 1.25mm , while one uses Hyper G 1.30mm / Head Hawk 1.25mm.
When guys are searching for a string, I ask them:
1) any arm/elbow/shoulder issues ?
2) how often they break strings?
3) level of play?
4) current setup and tension
If they have 3 frames, I give them 3 different setups telling them nothing about the strings to prevent basis. I let them play with the setups and then pick the one they like the most. I then cut out the strings from the other frames and restring with the string they like better. They only pay for the labor $15 a frame and strings for the frames they like. So I eat the cost of stings on 2 out of 3 frames initially so the client isn't paying for 5 sets of strings if he gives me 3 frames. $45 Labor and price for 3 packs will get 5 frames strung and 2 frames will be cutout after they pick what they like better.
For for hard hitting 4.0 and 4.5 players who like full poly with no arm/elbow/ shoulder issues, I typically string VCT 1.30mm, Solinco Revolution 1.25mm and Hyoer G 1.25mm and for the worst string breakers, 1.30mm Hyoer G. ( the guys who break 16g poly in 10-12 hours)
I have Revolution and Hyoer G in 1.30mm and 1.25mm each but VCT only in 1.25mm. I string for other 4.5 guys who use other setups, but the 5 guys I listed above liked the shaped polys. the one using Hyper G 1.30/ Head Hawk hits the hardest but he liked the Hawk in the crosses more than that full Hyoer G.
For those that haven't tried Solinco Revolution, I have two players who like it more than VCT for durability / playability. 3 of those 4.5 choose VCT over Revolution, but it seems that they break the VCT around the 30 day mark. 1.25 Revolution seems to last longer than VCF 1.30mm for the same player. Hope this helps. This is a good thread and appreciate all posts from you guys. Always looking for inputs that help me as a stinger for better players.
