I am annoyed to no end that Federer lost the #1 ranking

If Federer hadn't lost to freaking Kokkinakis in a third set tiebreak (Who loses two matches in a row in third set tiebreaks????) he would've still had the #1 ranking going into his four months vacation. There would've been a good chance that he would've never lost it over the duration of the entire clay season.

Nadal is defending 4680 points on clay. Nadal has barely won any points in 2018. He's ranked #40 in the Race. I don't think there's ever been a current #1 with such a big disparity in their actual ranking and Race ranking in April. There's no one else even close to Fed other than Nadal. Delpo is 2nd in the Race but he's not playing clay either.
So my point is, there's a HUGE chance that Fed would've retained his #1 ranking for about 16 more weeks if only he hadn't lost to the Kokk.

I know what most fellow Fed fans will say: "He has won so much already, who cares about a few extra weeks at #1?" My response to that: "Sour grapes. Being #1 in the world is a huge honour and every single week at that spot means a lot. It's ridiculous to have Nadal with his measly 360 pts earned in 2018 occupy that spot right now and it would've been awesome to be #1 during the entire clay season without having to step foot on a clay court." Federer messed this one up in tremendous fashion. It just has to be said.

Sorry, you're projecting. You are the one with the sour grapes post. ;) How can any Fed fan complain about any defeat at this point? He added three totally unexpected majors when he was/is ancient. Nadal's not catching either his slam count or his weeks at #1. Whether he loses in the first round or final of IW or Miami matters zilch to his legacy. He won the AO this year and if he wins nothing else, the year has been a smashing success.

That doesn’t even make any sense. Do you know what the term “sour grapes” means? Anyway, obviously he’s had a lot of success this year already but my point is that he was incredibly close to adding a lot more to it.

IW loss was more irritating than Miami.

Just 1 point away from securing 400 more ranking pts. On serve.

Love Delpo obviously but he didn't really do anything magnificent to break either save for a couple of great points. He was pretty much ready to be the runner-up but Fred flubbed it.

That said AO was by far the biggest objective and that was achieved.

He could still win wimbledon this year. Just be grateful :)
I’ve got a lot of things in my life that I’m grateful about but I can’t say that Fed’s tennis achievements are in the top of that list. I’m following Fed’s career and I’m excited when he does well and wins but I’m not going to kid myself into thinking that he does it for anyone other than himself. I guess I’m thankful for his existence though, tennis would be a lot less interesting without him.

I get what you mean. I remember being quite annoyed when Federer let Tsonga come back on him in the 2009 Montreal match up 5-1 in the third set and losing in a TB. Even though it was such a small, ultimately pretty meaningless match. When a guy is on a hot streak you don't want to see it essentially donated away. Not only did he let IW slip, but he lost immediately after too - when the pressure of maintaining a bagel in the L column was lifted.

Did Del Potro/ Kokkinakis both deserve to win? Yes. Absolutely.

Do I feel like Federer gave both away to a considerable extent? Yes. Especially to a guy like Kokkinakis, who is good but obviously needs a little help too. An on his game Federer would have 6-2'd Kokkinakis in that third set. His serve was garbage that entire set.

The IW match sat much worse with me though. Since it was for another trophy, and since it was literally 1 point from happening with 3 opportunities (ON SERVE). If it wasn't on serve it wouldn't have been as bad. But the fact he played brilliantly to break him only to give it right away was beyond annoying, idk how any Federer fan couldn't say that wasn't annoying. Even if it did happen to the benefit of Delpo, who most people like. It also would have, as I said before, gotten him 400 more points than he has now and guarantee #1 regardless of Miami results.

At the end of the day, just try to take the good with the bad - since the good still greatly outweighs the bad this season - He got #20 which was monumental - and he faced BP down in that 5th set which could have been disastrous (probably would have been given what a momentum driven player Marin is). He did what he needed to do in Rotterdam - where he met surprisingly good resitance from guys like Haase and Kohlschreiber.

The Miami loss would have been 100x more palatable if he had just taken care of Delpo like he should have. Even though it'd have been a bit weird if Kokkinakis was his first loss (though no weirder than Donskoy being it last yr I guess).

It's all just cherries on top...just relax and enjoy the artist doing his work. The guy could have retired years ago.

Federer wouldn’t have kept the number 1 ranking had he beaten the Kokk. He needed to have made at least the quarters in Miami to have kept it. He needed 720 points from the sunshine double to keep hold of it, but only got 610. He really lost the no. 1 ranking by not taking one of the 3 match points v Del Po in the IW final. He would have got 1000 points from the win. No need to have beaten the Kokk.

C’est la vie. Fed has form for throwing away matches needlessly. It is is inexplicable and one of his faults unfortunately. Still love him despite of it.

I'm annoyed that Rafa got injured again and wasn't able to play Acapulco and take back the #1 that Fed vultured. Maybe if Fed hadn't been so anxious to play that extra tournie he would have had the energy to play IW and Miami to the end. Serves him right.

I think tennis is a lot more interesting with a few Fed losses sprinkled here and there.

Life would be quite dull without old man Fed going for his occasional walkabouts.

Amazing to think what we would have been happy with at the beginning of 2017 and what we actually have now:

1) 20 Grand Slams
2) Back to No 1
3) A more respectable H to H with Rafa [and I imagine for Fed himself a HUGE psychological closure]

Any of these we would have settled for on Jan 1st 2017 and instead we got all three!

Who cares, it was his own fault for not converting on those match points in the IW final, and the fact that he's skipping 3 months of the season just so he can attend a certain royal wedding.

It would make a complete mockery of the sport if he's the reigning world no.1 come the French Open and doesn't play the biggest clay tournament bar none.

His decision to skip the entire clay season for the past 2 years has been nothing short of ridiculous. His entire team should be fired on the spot.

"I know how you feel"

I mean, I could make a list of thing of the same significance that annoy me, but I don't have till the 24th century to make that thread.

If this annoys you to no end as a fan, you're just a glory hunter.

If we talk about him winning enough or not I wouldn’t say he added 3 totally unexpected majors. Remember we must extend the period back to Wimbledon 2012 when he already was at 17. Back then him getting 20 seemed to be an obvious choice and then he failed for very long. And if we consider January 2010 when he won his 16th title, he was back to his dominant best at Slams and nobody would have been surprised with even 25 majors.

Of course you’re correct that nobody at the beginning of 2017 would have thought those 3 added majors were possible.

Nadal I think is capable of winning 4 more majors, but Roger will also add more. Who else should do right now? ;)

His decision to skip the clay season was one of the best decisions actually.I waited for him to skip this season for a long time.It came too late I will say.

I think the point is that it WAS extremely annoying...at the time. But most Fed fans would have been over the two defeats in a few days really. As others have said, after AO the goal is clearly Wimbledon. After that, US Open. Everything else is a warm up for something, which kind of makes IW and Miami weird when you get to Fed’s age. They’re prestigious, but they are not close to Slams.

Now if Fed blows Championship points at Wimbledon or USO this year...now that would sting!

I agree here actually. Loads of Fed fans claiming these are bonus slams - I think we need to be honest and admit that without them Nadal has the slam record! Fed needed those three titles more than we realised.

Thankfully, he got them!

Absolutely! Remember most likely Nadal will be exactly at this number 17 in just a few weeks. And if Roger would have lost that Australian Open 2017 it could have already been decisive AGAINST him. Because who knows if he wins Wimbledon and AO 2018 then.

Also there a some posters who always say the Slam count is decided in favour of Roger since a long time ago! How could someone say that? Just imagine Nadal would have won AO this year, and he would have been one Slam away this June.

No, the race is very much alive. Djokovic is definitely out though.

Yay, it's clay season so "fans" like you can now venture out of Nadal news thread and spew crap. Federer vultured? Let's see how long you hang around these parts.

And LOL at Nadal getting "injured." It always the injury. Every loss is the injury except during clay season of course.

Federer always plays one tournament in February, he decided to play Rotterdam this year. Problem?

After the clay season they will disappear like they did after AO 2018 when their favorite faked injury against Cilic.Yeah he is always injured except during the clay season

Honestly who cares about No.1 especially so late in both Nadal and Federer's careers. I didn't give a flying duck when Fed took it from Nadal and I also couldn't have cared less when Nadal gained it back. All that really matters is that they are playing well enough to win the big ones.

My point of view may be different than most Fed fans because that's just how I've learnt to look at things as a Nadal fan. Whenever the guy seems to get No. 1 it's almost always a sign that a new injury is about to come his way.

Of course. That's why he's got 2 Wimbledon, 3 USO and 1 AO titles. Nadal also leads Fed 3:1 at the AO.

I thought Cilic had him dead to rights in the 5th set. 30 minutes later, it was over.

Can't complain after that. Anywho, Federer will end the year Number 1 so I wouldn't be too annoyed.
