i didn't realize Djokovic won a Nole Slam (equiv. Tiger slam)

i follow tennis pretty closely but i had no idea that Djokovic held all 4 majors at one time.

why didn't this get more love from mainstream press? tennis press?

the Tiger Slam in golf was huge........... i will note the odds of a top golfer winning a tourney is far far less than that of a top tennis player. but i still think this was very under-reported.

Because his name is not Roger Federer.

Relax. You are likely witnessing a 2nd Wimbledon GS (WB-USO-AO-FO), aka, Nole Slam. 3 down, 1 to go. ;)
BTW, did you catch that Novak has become the first player to win all 14 Tier 1 tournaments? And that he is the stand-alone king of Australian Open?

May have been partly hidden in the media because it was also Nole's first RG and Career GS at the same time. Though, if he had been American or British headlines would have been much bigger.

I forgot about the Tiger Slam actually, maybe because I don't follow golf or maybe because the Serena Slam happened so soon after that I forgot about it. It was an amazing achievement nonetheless and so was the Nole Slam. I have my theories why the Nole Slam did not get more coverage but no need going over them for the 10th time.

Probably because he did so beating his lapdog Murray and old Fed who couldn’t make it to 5 sets or play a decent FH to save his life.

Still a great achievement, albeit with no one to challenge him.

If he did it in 2012 beating Nadal at RG, or Fed did in 2006/2007 doing the same would’ve been a lot more epic and noteworthy.

I agree that the fact that Djokovic won his only RG title when Nadal was injured and out of form made the 4 in a row a bit less impressive. The problem is that when someone reads "4 in a row" it looks like a complete domination of the sport. But when you see that Nadal withdrawed injured from RG, you know Djokovic never dominated the whole sport (that is, all the surfaces including clay).

@tom-selleck, here is really good article about it covered by one of the few in mainstream media.

It was very impressive but I think the fact that it was in 2 different years made it less of an extremely good accomplishement, it's like being World No. 1 once a week vs Year-End World No. 1 in a week I'd say

Do you think Rafa would've (or even could've) beaten Novak at RG 2016 if his wrist was fit enough to play?

I have no idea, untestable question. Anyhow, that is why I said Novak won his only RG title when Rafa was injured and out of form.

Or Rafael Nadal. The tennis press would go nuts if Nadal did something like that (but unfortunately he's never even been very close).
He won 3 consecutive, that is, he was one Slam short of winning the 4 in a row. Just as close as Federer.

Yes Nole Slam didn't get a lot of media coverage and this is not surprising. After all Djokovic is the second coming of Lendl. In other words Djokovic is not a popular champion.

I agree that not enough was made of it, but...really?

As for winning a golf tourney (or major) being tougher than a tennis t/m, I think they're almost exactly comparable. Similar-sized fields at the start, four per year in differing conditions, and the all-time golf majors leader has 18 compared to 20 in tennis.

Whatever the case, it was 47 years between Laver and Djokovic doing it!

The Novak Slam did feel pretty low-key for whatever reason. I reckon if he does it again it'll be way more hyped.

Unless 'tennis' is the name/nickname of a person you are stalking, I don't know how the above sentence is not a contradiction.

The fact that Nole had beaten him the year before pretty much nullifies that, regardless of Nadal's poor form in 2015.
The Nole Slam did not get a lot of attention for a variety of reasons. Most have been covered, but the fact is the CYGS is still the holy grail, despite the fact that any combination of 4 in a row is just as hard.

it was a bit of a muffled reaction from the tennis world, and sporting world in general. not saying there was no acknowledgment, there was, but...coulda gotten more love for sure. definitely the biggest thing he can say neither of his big rivals managed to pull off. huge accomplishment.

Not from Westphalia you see. Though for an Asian like me, he is European enough. I mean Agassi didn't beat peak Bruguera for his CGS so how come nobody uses his competition to discredit his achievement? Why bring up Nadal's absence only in Nole's case?

I have a feeling the increasing saltiness of Nadal fans as Nole approaches his slam tally is going to break the unholy alliance.

I guess I never paid attention, but is there an alliance between Nadal and Djokovic fans? I wondered why neither fan base attacks the other.

Djokodal fans are not that common from what I have seen. Less so than Fedal fans.
Too many losses sting for both fan bases.

I think it didn't get a ton of attention because we all knew it was coming. By the end of 2015 it was becoming pretty obvious what was going to happen.

By the time the French rolled around and all he had to do was beat Andy Murray in another final, there wasn't exactly a lot of suspense. It's completely unfair, but he didn't get a crazy amount of praise because he was supposed to do it.

I was just riffing on a joke some Djokovic fans here have made in the past about a Nadalovic alliance (against Fed fans who are the majority here).

This is the most under-reported news in sport ever. This was the most significant result in tennis history (something that Federer/Nadal were not able to do and Laver done it when tennis was a different sport; Federer could not do it even in the absence of Nadal and Djokovic), and yet it was buried under the news of "eighth player to win career slam". This reveled unspeakable bias of mainstream media. Only one that I know to gave deserving credit to that was Andy Murray.

It does not seem that you have a sense of justice, do you? If Federer wins 4 in a row and this is not reported as such, I would consider to be gross injustice and would support Federer.

Golf is too much of a luck factor and as such the Tiger Slam is more impressive than even 5 consecutive Majors in tennis.

Is it some kind of really bad joke?
It is just the most impressive (and the most dominant) year streak in history of tennis! 4 slams, WTF, 5 masters and total all times record of 16950 points!

Not dominating all tour and not dominating clay under period?
He won Madrid and RG, and played F in Rome. He played just 1 match with Rafa on clay in that period and he won it in 2 sets in Rome! His h2h with Rafa was 5-0, with fed 4-2 including victory in W and USO! He lost one rubbish match in WTF RR but won final against him! He was 5-2 vs Muzza, including OZI and RG victories. Hes clay points that year was 3610 (playing 4 tournaments ), Nadals 2130 (playing 5 tournaments), Muzzas 3160 (playing 4 tournaments) and Feds 270 (playing 2 tournaments).

totally 31-4 against top10!

And clay season (2015) before the streak he was also the most consistent and dominant player and wan most points, 3200, playing just 3 tournaments (2 masters and RG: W, W, F). Beating Rafa in MC and RG and Fed in Rom. And before that he wan OZI, Miami and IW which together with the W2015-RG2016 streak made most impressive and dominant 18 months in modern tennis history.

Why wasn't hype around Djoker Slam not as strong as Tiger Slam's hype? Because No1e's sponsors (to 2016) - Uniqlo, Adidas, Head - neglected the promotion of Djoker Slam, while Tiger Slam had great media coverage thanks to Nike. If Federer or Nadal in the past were to gains NCYGS, this series would have a bigger media coverage just for better PR-activity from Nike.

Let's hope that if Novak gains the Djoker Slam II, Lacoste better promotes this possible success, than Uniqlo did with Djoker Slam.

But the Querrey defeat didn't cancelled his Slams winnings at the 2015 WB, 2015 US Open, 2016 AO and 2016 FO as well, isn't it!?;)
No, though it cancelled holding one of the majors (Wimbledon) and shifting the attention shifted to next major winner (Murray). After winning the French the winner has the "least" amount of time to celebrate their slam victory before the next one of all the majors, heh.

The Nole Slam isn’t an "official" achievement and it’s not as impressive or difficult as the CYGS so there’s that. And as long as Federer and Nadal will be in the picture, they will shift attention away from his achievements a little bit because he has to share the limelight with them.

Except one lost in straights in the quarters of the fourth event, while the other lost a competitive four-setter in the final. Twice.

Rafa did 3 in a row once, Fed did it twice, No1e....

1st time, after 3 slams streak, No1e lost the RG final in 4, 5-7 in the 4th.
2nd time he did No1e-slam.
3rd time??? We will see soon.
