I don't watch finals anymore if the big 3 are not playing each other.

I will still watch, but yeah, for the most part they are foregone conclusions (except Fed IW). We knew this was going to be the outcome before the tourney started and today before the final.

Either we are getting too smart on TTW, or the tour has become entirely too predictable. You choose.

It is crazy how much more vulnerable they seem at stages other than the final.

We've seen Rafa get knocked out early by Kyrgios, Fognini, Thiem and Tsitispas this year. But the only final he lost was to Novak. You have to wonder if those 4 losses still would've happened a round later when those underdogs knew a title was on the line and actually had something to lose.

Don't you have a favorite of the three? Surely you must watch their finals match, no? I mean, if you are watching tennis regularly that is.

I would say the big3 typically get stronger as tourneys go on, while the young guys get weaker. Whether that is due to stamina, consistency, or a mental thing, it is a problem.

I'm pretty interested to watch when it is a B3 member versus an interesting next gen player (today's match definitely qualified as that, unfortunately Med couldn't deliver). However I do agree that when it is a B3 member versus one the many journeymen they've been beating up on for their whole careers, it is not exactly exciting to watch anymore.

Not really. I would have more confidence in guys like Tsonga or Berdych to beat one of the Big 3 in such a match than Medvedev, Khachanov, Shapovalov, FAA etc. Seriously, I would have preferred Ferrer in his last year on ATP.

Zverev was a bit lucky in his title runs 1 or 2 years ago, but now he is even more out of the discussion than the others I mentioned. And it will stay so, there is absolutely no sign he has something in his game to change this.

He doesn't. Even before the problems with his manager, he was losing to many players in Bo3 too. Tsonga, Seppi, Sock, Jaziri, to name a few. He's just a pusher who occassionaly has good serving weeks.

It just emphasises that when they lose, they're playing garbage.

Andy Murray said like yesterday that he believes most in Zverev, Thiem and Tsitsipas.

I couldn’t agree more. Zverev will come back stronger.

I've been mulling over a theory the last few days that the big three are actually (even) less vulnerable against worse players now precisely because they are all a bit past it but not that past it. I think this works here, too:

In an early round, they might be trying to find their best form in case they need it for a later round against the other big three. But they aren't really capable of their best form anymore, and playing at one's best involves taking more risks than playing within oneself does. (Think, for example, of how much more likely you or I would be to win a point against a pro if they didn't know that we're terrible than if they did know that. If they didn't know, we might win a point - they might double fault on one of their first couple of service points or they might overcook a return or something. If they did know, they would play safe and so we wouldn't win a point). So, when the big three are playing risky tennis to try to reach a good level for them (something that they can't really do anymore), they might lose to a worse player than them - a Tsitsipas, a Fognini, or even a Thiem. But when the final is against such a player, they know that staying in third gear will get the job done. And while none of them is really capable of hitting overdrive anymore, none of them is so far past it that they can't comfortably stay in third gear. Hence, they are not going to lose a final to a worse player, because their third gear will get the job done and they will be content to stay in it.

the "smart" people of TTW have babbled the same prior to Monte Carlo ;)

Finals should be played at night. People have stuff todo in the day and the players will perform better without the sun.

Its hard to sacrafice part of your day to watch someone else do something. Night time though is tv time, having tournaments on at midnight are my favs.

I know you like him, but what are the signs in his game?

He seemingly cannot finish a point with his forehand into the open court because it is too soft. And that is the bread-and-butter shot in tennis.

His first serve can be good, but the second serve is much weaker than Murray’s himself and almost certainly a double fault when it matters.

And I think we don’t have to talk about his net game which is almost non-existant.

If anything he was lucky to have that much success. I normally don’t say it if someone repeats a win, but Zverev really was ALWAYS just at the right place at the right time. He played an injured Federer, a listless Djokovic in his biggest slump and a nervous and exhausted Thiem (after Thiem beat Nadal) for his Masters titles. Apart from that all those draws were easy as hell. And the WTF win was just strange. I mean, what did Djokovic do in that final after routinely beating Zverev in RR?

But now Zverev is totally deciphered. His failures and weaknesses are well-known to anyone, and I think we have already seen the best of him. Also he doesn't have what you need to become a great champion. He looks lost on the court, as if he doesn't belong there.

By the way, I like Murray, but if he really believes what he said, he must have been FAR away from the tour in the last months. ;)
