MCenroe said the same about Becker. a few months later Becker won Wimbledon aged 17!I have no problem with cocky and arrogant players. In fact i have an affinity for them. The problem with Shelton is that he's nowhere close to having achieved enough to pull it off without him looking likena clown. Talking trash to a guy with 23 slams? Beat him once, just a single time and i'll gladly put up with your shenanigans. Until then save that stuff for guys at your level
Yeah I loved the spontaneous pushups. Tennis players seem so fragile all the time, acting so hurt then running like gazelles. It was just Ben's way of saying 'Im fine, let's go!'he seems genuine and not putting up a show based on a PR consultant.
Like that tiebreaker point where he crashed into the sideboard. I thought he could be hurt and the pushups were spontaneous fun rather than something planned
I remember Srichaphan did the push up thing as well once. Crowd loved it.Yeah I loved the spontaneous pushups. Tennis players seem so fragile all the time, acting so hurt then running like gazelles. It was just Ben's way of saying 'Im fine, let's go!'
I hated the phone hangup and he's still a bit over the top but he's aging well and getting more likeable. Love his energy and smile. And the other players do seem to like him.

Unnecessary grunting, pumping himself up after really non-consequential points, shaking off good points from his opponent with silly smiles...oh and the obligatory putting his finger to his ear...Carlos does most of this too but it seems a little more annoying coming from a frat boy...
Please you two get together at an isolated location, and don't come out until you reached a joint position.I like Ben Shelton, I appreciate his swagger
Pro is not like college tennis.I’m glad someone’s bringing attitude like you see in college tennis to the pros. I get why some hate it, I find it entertaining!
Those guys you named outside of Isner were not relevant on tour. Maybe they should have done some more antics to get on TV and or win more matches.true, but johnson, isner and giron also played college tennis, without the annoying yelling and habits. sheltons „personality“ is just a perfect fit to the „competitive culture“ (to put it nicely) of college tennis.
Also juvenile. He seems to struggle to get out of juvenile behaviour. Djokovic's hang up the phone was one of the funniest things I've seen on a pro tennis court.
The continuous grunting and pumping are not my definition of charisma.Still more charisma in his toes alone than Sinner.
You’re right. It’s more competitive. All the more reason to do what it takes to winPro is not like college tennis.
Yep, if you're an American and you hate Shelton you hate growing our sport here. I don't make the rules.Half the kids at my tennis club are already mimicking his by his sides clenched fists, roaring celebration. He's a hoot and great for the sport.
He’s the only American tennis player, or any pro tennis player, that I can 100% tell is a college kid. Nobody else is so obviously influenced by the college tennis scene as much as Shelton which I really like, very unique over anyone else. When he was first breaking through, I wasn't a huge fan due to said mannerisms. However seeing him in interviews, along with being very cordial at net after losses, I've changed my tune quite a bit. Taking a look at college tennis, as @Bill Lobsalot said, you realize just how much those guys try to pump themselves and their teammates up with big celebrations, totally different vibe. I feel like Ben has brought that along with his own personality to the tour. Plus I'm starting to realize that I'm just becoming an old fart.

dunno. he had a temper as a team but the consensus from players and everyone else seems to be he's a super-easygoing nice guy in real life. The media had been giving false images of Federer. He's not a nice guy behind the mask.
Young Fed threw his racquet in a tennis academy and it ripped the curtain on the court. He also threw a PlayStation controller out of the room when he lost a game lol.
Like I have said before he thinks tennis is American handball where this is the norm.Too much fistpumping and "come on!" in general. They celebrate every point, opponents' errors included.
I met Sonego at a stadium restaurant at the Turin ATP finals. We were the only few people at the restaurant, and he was standing by the bar. He was not friendly AT ALL. Very cold and stand-offish.Sonego is a lot more likeable.

This seems to be the culture of college tennis, and players like Ben Shelton and Danielle Collins not only embrace it but perhaps they are able to use it to their advantage. I'm not a big fan of it, but can generally overlook it. Collins seems to take it to the next level by getting into it with the fans. However, at times it can be entertaining, and I actually found her interaction with the Aussie fans great. She doesn't seem to take it seriously, but some of the fans/spectators certainly do.Too much fistpumping and "come on!" in general. They celebrate every point, opponents' errors included.

lolBen is my favorite broccoli head![]()
Who wrote that book? Novak’s dad? Those things I mentioned, I read about it in the book about Federer.
I saw live on TV when Federer yelled "Sh*t" very very loudly when he hit an error, and then he smiled while glancing at Tursunov. This guy feels like he's entitled to do whatever he likes, he thinks he's above the rule.
