I find Ben Shelton's mannerisms annoying

I have no problem with cocky and arrogant players. In fact i have an affinity for them. The problem with Shelton is that he's nowhere close to having achieved enough to pull it off without him looking likena clown. Talking trash to a guy with 23 slams? Beat him once, just a single time and i'll gladly put up with your shenanigans. Until then save that stuff for guys at your level
MCenroe said the same about Becker. a few months later Becker won Wimbledon aged 17!

he seems genuine and not putting up a show based on a PR consultant.

Like that tiebreaker point where he crashed into the sideboard. I thought he could be hurt and the pushups were spontaneous fun rather than something planned
Yeah I loved the spontaneous pushups. Tennis players seem so fragile all the time, acting so hurt then running like gazelles. It was just Ben's way of saying 'Im fine, let's go!'

I hated the phone hangup and he's still a bit over the top but he's aging well and getting more likeable. Love his energy and smile. And the other players do seem to like him.

I remember Srichaphan did the push up thing as well once. Crowd loved it.

I would like to see Shelton step up his game. Sonnego did a great job till the final tiebreaker raising his level. In the breaker, I felt like he lost confidence in putting away his volleys and overhit approach and baseline shots.

He is very annoying and should be banned from the sport. All the OP mentioned is what I can't stand about him and all of his strokes are ugly.
I'd switch sports if I had to play guys like that or I'd hit an overhead at him.

Unnecessary grunting, pumping himself up after really non-consequential points, shaking off good points from his opponent with silly smiles...oh and the obligatory putting his finger to his ear...Carlos does most of this too but it seems a little more annoying coming from a frat boy...

I like Ben Shelton, I appreciate his swagger
Please you two get together at an isolated location, and don't come out until you reached a joint position.

I didn't see all of the match, only about 20 minutes, so I'm not sure if Sonego does this always or just for the time I was watching... Sonego was NOT grunting when he hit the ball, he was grunting AFTER he hit the ball when the ball was arriving at Shelton!

true, but johnson, isner and giron also played college tennis, without the annoying yelling and habits. sheltons „personality“ is just a perfect fit to the „competitive culture“ (to put it nicely) of college tennis.
Those guys you named outside of Isner were not relevant on tour. Maybe they should have done some more antics to get on TV and or win more matches.

His facial expressions after he wins a big point make me want to throw my TV out the window, so cocky and annoying. Someone seriously needs to remind him that he's not a teenager anymore. I hope Sinner absolutely wipes the floor with him.

When he was first breaking through, I wasn't a huge fan due to said mannerisms. However seeing him in interviews, along with being very cordial at net after losses, I've changed my tune quite a bit. Taking a look at college tennis, as @Bill Lobsalot said, you realize just how much those guys try to pump themselves and their teammates up with big celebrations, totally different vibe. I feel like Ben has brought that along with his own personality to the tour. Plus I'm starting to realize that I'm just becoming an old fart.
He’s the only American tennis player, or any pro tennis player, that I can 100% tell is a college kid. Nobody else is so obviously influenced by the college tennis scene as much as Shelton which I really like, very unique over anyone else.

i preferred the post-match lotus-like meditation ;)

what's up with all the current rage?

The media had been giving false images of Federer. He's not a nice guy behind the mask.

Young Fed threw his racquet in a tennis academy and it ripped the curtain on the court. He also threw a PlayStation controller out of the room when he lost a game lol.
dunno. he had a temper as a team but the consensus from players and everyone else seems to be he's a super-easygoing nice guy in real life.

Sonego is a lot more likeable.
I met Sonego at a stadium restaurant at the Turin ATP finals. We were the only few people at the restaurant, and he was standing by the bar. He was not friendly AT ALL. Very cold and stand-offish.

I assume most players don't want to be approached by fans. Whatever. I'll never try to say hello to these guys again without an introduction.

Get a life, grumpy pants.

Too much fistpumping and "come on!" in general. They celebrate every point, opponents' errors included.
This seems to be the culture of college tennis, and players like Ben Shelton and Danielle Collins not only embrace it but perhaps they are able to use it to their advantage. I'm not a big fan of it, but can generally overlook it. Collins seems to take it to the next level by getting into it with the fans. However, at times it can be entertaining, and I actually found her interaction with the Aussie fans great. She doesn't seem to take it seriously, but some of the fans/spectators certainly do.

I remember Srichaphan did the push up thing as well once. Crowd loved it.

Robby Ginepri was playing Djokovic at RG in 2010, in the round of 16, and fell the same way on clay. The American was serving. Immediately after, he performed over ten push-ups. It was during one of Ginepri's serves and seeing what he was doing, Tomas Carbonell said: "That doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Ginepri is shortening his triceps". Robby Ginepri lost the next points and his serve.

The crowd applauded Ginepri's vigorous push-ups. He was showing off.

It’s weird. I like him in interviews, and he seems like a genuinely great guy.

But I can’t stand his on court antics. It’s like a dipshit teenager who thinks he’s cool.

Those things I mentioned, I read about it in the book about Federer.

I saw live on TV when Federer yelled "Sh*t" very very loudly when he hit an error, and then he smiled while glancing at Tursunov. This guy feels like he's entitled to do whatever he likes, he thinks he's above the rule.
Who wrote that book? Novak’s dad?
