I have some questions for the experts in strings.

I use Yonex Poly Tour Spin in my Yonex EZONE Xi and I use Yonex Poly Tour HS in my Yonex EZONE Xi Team Plus, both strings are 1.25mm.

I'm intending to mix both, so:

1- To get more spin should a put Yonex SPIN on mains and Yonex HS on crosses?

2- I read here people suggest to put the smooth poly on mains and shaped on crosses for more spin, why? If the string responsible to generate more spin is the mains?

Thanks guys.

The theory is that putting shaped poly in the mains and smooth poly in the crosses would yield the most spin. The reason is that the mains would grab the ball and be able to slide along the smooth crosses at the same time, yielding maximum spin (in theory, of course).

Thanks for the answer.

Now, why do people put natural gut mains (I used to as well) and poly crosses, and say it gets more spin than the other way around? Wouldn't poly mains and gut crosses be better for spin?

I know for feel it is better gut mains in my opinion.

In a gut/poly hybrid, spin is maximized when the mains are able to slide smoothly across the crosses and then snap back into place as the ball leaves the stringbed.

Poly crosses are very smooth and offer relatively little friction for the main strings to slide and return to their original position.

If you were to reverse things, the poly mains would be trying to slide back and forth along the gut crosses. That has more friction, so you get less spin.

The back-and-forth action on gut crosses also tends to wear through any protective coating the gut might have and start it fraying more quickly than it would in the mains.

Thanks for the answer, very well explained.

So if it is poly with poly I should be able to get more spin with shaped mains/round (smooth) crosses right? In this way the shaped can slide back and forth on smooth round and snap back.

You would be surprised with the spin you can get with gut mains smooth poly crosses. I would say it is about equal, obviously with superior feel.

Cobalt blue YPTS + Green YPTHS is going to look real funky.

Why aren't you trying the YPTP on the crosses?

Yeah I know, it's just a trial. YPTP is more powerful than both of these, therefore at the tension I use would increase the length of my shots, which right now is perfect.

The superior feel for sure, but not the control and ball bite with full poly or poly hybrid, I never use gut/poly unless it's winter, which I can use multifilament as well in some occasions.

I don't notice the great spin the theory says neither, to me the spin is effortless with full poly, ball bite and control is the best with full poly.
In theory, yes.

I think that's what I'm gonna do:

YPTS mains 53/ YPTHS 51
