I love dead poly

The first 2 hours of volkl cyclone is terrible.

But I find when the edges are worn off and the strings move more, I am able to hit the ball way better, able to smack the ball anywhere I want. So why do people hate dead poly?

That's because it not dead, it's just broken in. Polys usually need some time to break in.

Also if you're waiting for the shape to wear
out, just get an unshaped string. Most polys are round anyways.

Could be you are stringing at wrong tension. After the string de-tensions closer to your desired tension, it is playing the way you like.

Be careful you’ll be shunned on this board if you don’t change your poly strings every 10-12 hours!!!

“Shame...Shame...Shame....Shame...Shame”

(I don’t subscribe to this thinking btw)

Neither do I.

See my post with the names and photo records of 5 USTA 4.5C men who play with poly for a month. Love how 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 men tell them how they are doing it wrong. [emoji102]

None have had TE since I started stringing their frames and 4 of the 5 are the 2018 SC USTA 4.5 18+ Champions. The other one lost in the finals to his friends.

Agreed. I used to string in the mid 50s and always hated new restrings, much preferring them after I’d used them for a few hours. Now I string in the mid to low 40s and fresh strings always feel the best, with performance dropping off over time.

I string HyperG18 @ 49/48 for my son. He has 3 racquets that he rotates. The freshly strung racquet sits in his bag for a couple weeks before it gets pulled out to play. So the initial de-tension right after stringing has happened while sitting in the bag. I should RT it off the stringer and a couple weeks later before he plays and see how much it de-tensions. That could give an indication of what I need to string at if he is in the middle of a tournament and he breaks all his strings (shouldn't happen...but never know).

He's been upset with me at times when I re-strung his racquet right before a tournament and he didn't like how it played. Probably didn't have the same initial detenioning yet.

I’ve used RacquetTune to monitor initial tension loss with a number of different poly strings that were strung in the mid to low 40s. Almost all of the initial tension loss occurred in the first 24-48 h after stringing. There was a small amount of tension loss (usually 0.5 lbs or less) on the second day, and after three days the tension loss was negligible (0.1 lbs or less). So I would be surprised if there was a very noticeable difference between the racket that was strung three weeks before first use compared with the racket that was strung a few days before first use. However, I kept the rackets at 22 degrees C during my tests. If the rackets are exposed to higher temperatures (e.g. taken on court on a hot day and left in a bag that is not insulated) then the strings will lose more tension, although some of the tension will be regained if the rackets are then transferred back to cooler conditions.

How many rackets do they have and how many times a week do they play? 5 hrs a week with two rackets is about 10 hrs each.

Most 3.0-3.5 players I know string poly and restring once or twice a year. Many of them have TE. Go figure.

I suspect the 6.0 players would laugh at the advice to restring every 10-12 hrs with poly, but for different reasons. They restring every 3 hrs.

Will Shelley has 4 Yonex AI 98s. He now breaks strings about every 12-15 hours in in new setup of Hyoer G 1.30 / Head Hawk 1.25mm. He is a former 5.0 and according to another 5.0 player I spoke to on the court tonight, he should probably be a 5.0 now. I strung up two of Will's Ai 98 frames earlier today by the way.

You can google his name, record, and his UTR. But I will save you a little trouble.

The other four 4.5 players have three frames each except Warenski, who has two 2009 Model PD+

Carmola 3 Prince Textreme Warrior 100 (restrings after he breaks stings and he breaks strings about once per month now with Cyclone Tour).

Cohen 3 13 oz Pure Control Tours ( strings around 4 months - plays 3 days a week minimum )

Loesch 3 Aero Pro Drives ( plays about 2 hours a week max. I stung two of his frames in July 17 and again in May 2018). Yes you read that correct. Kept the same strings in for 10 months. Plays once a week. I don't recommend this to anyone.

Warenski and Loesch never break strings. They are good players who simply play about once a week. Estes is a 4.0 and he breaks strings in three frames a month like clockwork as he plays 3-4 days week.

Been driving WTA players (yes those women who try to earn a living playing tennis) as a volunteer for years. I can guarantee you many WTA women don't restring their frames every 3 hours or even 3 days. Some WTA players string their own frames. Most try to save money. Some don't even have a coach. Many play doubles to earn an extra paycheck.

Funny how so many people think many 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, and every pro player restrings a frame with. poly, every 3 hours, or 4-6 hours or every 10 -12 hours. Many don't. Ask a qualifier WTA how often she restrings..

Just because Federer , Serena and many wealthy pros restring their frames every 7 games, many pros aren't wealthy. They want to eat. They aren't all from silver spoon households. Many people posting on these forums make a lot more coin than the many of the pros outside the top 100 make.

It’s not about poly or whether it is “dead”. It’s about string bed stiffness. The tension has a significant effect on the stiffness. When it drops, it is apparently dropping into your preferred stiffness parameters. You could just string it there in the first place, but then it would drop even lower. Or, you could string up a string that holds tension right at the stiffness you like. Then even if it is gut, it will feel the same as the poly at that stiffness.

Do you still like the string job after 20 hours? If so, then you really like dead poly.

For the 4.5 guys I string for, it isn't a question of "do I like dead poly", but rather "does getting my frame restrung more often make me a better player or prevent TE".

Clearly for them, the answer is "No"

You are about to get wet. ;)

Not me.. my yard yes. [emoji28] Evacuating tomorrow. No way I stay for even a Cat 2 Hurricane. Hugo was a Cat 2 and then 12 hours later it was a Cat 4.

A buddy and his wife evacuated Pensacola when Ivan hit as a Cat 4. Two of his neighbors stayed and died.

The thought of no AC, 99% humidity, bugs, snakes, and water everywhere isn't a place I want to be.

Wise man ... glad to hear you are bolting. I grew up with a BB gun near a bayou ... I know all about water moccasins. They do not make good pets.

Most of the examples you gave all fell under 20 hrs with poly. That’s reasonable if you are trying to save money and don’t have arm issues. I think 10-12 hours is more a suggestion if you care about best performance and safest setup for your arm.

I know I leave strings in even if they are no longer performing their best. Largely because most matches I play are non-important. But I do restring if I’ve got a tournament or league playoffs coming up.

Cohen, Loesch, Warenski all use frames for months far exceeding 20 hours. Would I do this ? No. But they are much better than me, so I can't fault them for kicking my butt with old strings. ☹️. Just wanted to give real examples of good players without tennis elbow who restring at different frequencies.

Restringing three frames around the 4-6 week mark for players with three frames seems about right for the 8-12 hour restring goal. Hitting 6 hours a week rotating three frames = 24 hours for 4 Weeks and 36 hours for six weeks.

24/3 = 8 hours & 36/3 = 12 hours. Some players put 20-25 hours a week per frame.. juniors hitting 4+ hours day. Talked to one last night. 14 year old 10 UTR.

Cohen restrings more frequently than the other two. Three 16x20 pattern Pure Control Tour playing 3-4 times a week. 4 months between last restringing. Carmola, Shelley, Estes all break the 1.30mm poly before 20 hours.

I love your avatar.

Anna was a younger girl from Brooklyn I dated briefly in 2008. Very smart and drop dead beautiful. One of those girls that all your friends want to steal. Everywhere we went men would look up and undress her.

She was so excite and very amaze. I will never forget one particular morning........epic.
