I need some help

Well today, I played in my first tournament. I did ok. I won my first match 6-3, 3-6, and 6-3. But I lost 0 & 0 in my second match. This is where I screwed up in my matches. Sometimes, my opponent would hit a shallow ball, but I can't get to it in time. If I do, I have to drop my racket head down, stroke the ball, but usually, it goes too high and I hit it out. Also, when I played the second match, I had a problem with deep balls. With the deep balls, they were too close to me and I just couldn't hit the ball. I also want to know how I can get more pace on my ground strokes and serves. I usually hit my groundstrokes with a lot of topspin, and I hit flat serves. I also need tips on hitting backspin slices and volleys. I just need tips to improve on these problems. Thanks in advanced.

anticipation, move your feet. both problems seem like you are not moving your feet and getting in to position.

Move your feet!

I agree, it sonds like it's your feet there are the problem! Try not to focus on your tennis but on your feet. If I has a bad day i always focus on my footwork. That usually works, try it and write what it was like!

Good luck.. FOCUS on your feet!!

I'm guessing my footwork needs some work. Sometimes when I run to the net, I kind of trip up. Is there any way I can work on footwork?

When you come to the net to volley, before your opponent hits the ball, do a jump stop and land both feet at the same time. This will get your balance ready to get left or right depending on where your opponent hits it. If you do this, you will notice a huge increase in consistency from the net. Also, on approach shots. When your opponent hits the short ones, run as fast as you can to get to it but SLOW DOWN when you strike the ball. A fast quick slice stroke will more then likely pop it up or dump it in the net, but if you slow your stroke down you will notice a nice low slice approach (down the line). I hope that helps.
