I really hope Nadal never plays this "tournament" again

Saving a matchpoint, coming back from 5-1 down, spending 3 hours against Tsitsipas to get another win and all that was WASTED TIME AND ENERGY. There is only one tournament where such a pathetic scenario is possible. Just to think Djokovic could keep fighting after saving matchpoints and winning back to back 3 setters in Rome. He could fight for the title until the last point.

Nadal should never play this "tournament" again. It doesn't deserve him. Even if he wins 3 matches in his group they will find a reason why he shouldn't play in the semifinals.

Congratulations to Nadal on YE#1 and now it's time to prepare for 2020, to play at tournaments where the conditions are fair for all players, where you can't lose a match and go out while another player loses a match and wins the title.

You’re overreacting. He’s not winning this tourney even if Med beat Sascha given the form of Fed and even Thiem. He handed Med and Stefanos two demoralizing losses which could help Rafa in his confidence against them in the coming matches next year. Also, he still technically ends the year on a winning note.

He won less sets.

I don't like the format, it's an anomaly from every other tournament, but Nadal is rightfully out.

If this had been a normal tournament, we would never have gotten Nadal/Medvedev and Nadal/Tsitsipas.

In any other tournament who would be out after the loss to Zverev

Exactly. It's not like the rules were well established ahead of time and understood by all players. A secret WTF committee decided Nadal shouldn't advance to the semis. Another great injustice committed against the humble bull

This thread should be renamed "The whining thread, Nadal's fans edition".:D
Now seriously, why it so hard to accept how this tournament works ? Nadal couldn't qualify and that's it.Time to get over it.
Because this tournament clearly works against him. He might win all 3 matches and they will still find a way how to push Federer into the semifinal instead of him.

I honestly think Nadal just blew his last chance at winning WTF when he lost to Zverev. His HC form was great and he was well rested.
Looks like Fed's ""GOAThood"" is safe for now.

If Nadal surpasses Federer in slams he is the GOAT for most people. And Federer fans can cry about Nadal not winning this pathetic "tournament" as much as they want. I don't want Nadal to EVER play it again, don't care about a title here.

400 ATP points and $500,000 hardly seems like a bad deal for a weeks work. Also consider that Nadal‘s presence in the draw surely put pressure on Djokovic in terms of reaching number one, probably caused him to perform more poorly than he would have otherwise

21 Slams and no WTF < 20 Slams and 6 WTF.
Nadal could win 6 more RG's but it wouldn't do as much for his legacy as one WTF title.

Look at the stats from

W-L
Sets
Games
Rafael Nadal 2-14-444-44
Daniil Medvedev 0-31-636-45
Stefanos Tsitsipas 2-15-241-34
Alexander Zverev 2-14-230-28

Nadal, Tsits' and Zverev all have the same W-L result so the decision becomes dependent on the Sets Won/Lost and then the Games Won/Lost stats. In both those Tsits' and Zverev are in the positive while Nadal is evens in both so he doesn't have a case based on the Set and Game win/loss ratios.

I agree. It's a big hole not having one title at the 5th biggest event. Federer nor Djokovic have any such holes in their resumes.
I see you are clearly butthurt about Nadal having 19 slams and getting the YE#1. Right now Nadal is still clearly ahead of Djokovic.

Only thing we can do is get over it now. He probably would have lost to Tsitsipas or Zverev again anyway considering his up and down form so probably wouldn't have gotten YE #1 anyway if he had beaten Thiem. I think he needs the break to recharge the batteries. Just win AO again and all will be well. :giggle:
An 8th AO title would be just wonderful NoleFam. :)

I wonder how Nadal can win a title in WTF if:
1. He almost never plays it. He skipped it 5 times in this decade
2. Even when he does play they do everything to keep him out of the tournament. They would find a reason to get him out even if he had 3 wins in his group.

Still a fantastic year. Added two more slams, bunch of weeks at #1 and a few masters. Also beat both Nadal and Fed to win both of the slams.

He was #1 the whole year so has to be happy. One thing about it is he hates being #2 so that will make him get off his azz and do better.

Why are you making this out to be like it is only Nadal that is ever at a disadvantage here? These have been the rules for nearly 50 years.
Because I actually remember Djokovic almost reaching the semifinals in 2011 with 1 win. (1 very close win, and in one of his losses he was totally destroyed). But when it comes to Nadal he never gets out of the group unless he has 3 wins, and even then they try to find reasons to keep him out.
