per live rankings, she's now 262 and the 4th ranked canadian
(her ASB points from last year have disappeared, but she has a main draw WC this year to try to get some of those points back - again, fortunately for her, singles career limping along rather than being already done due to her ability to generate WCs)

she has the large majority of her points (160 of her remaining 223) on the line during january and february - if she were to fail to defend any of those points, she'd be around 550 - she either has a good january / february or it's all over

Good result to beat coming in as a WC the versatile Flipkens.
Came to the net.
The drama is pink and white.
R2 vs Garcia, thus tough, even though she barely beat Tousend, but Bouchard has a chance.

Big time result to defend her QF points from last year - if she were to win again and get another 50 points that’d go a long way to defend the 70 she has on the line shortly at the Aussie

Otherwise she really needs to follow up this result with 3-4 wins (3 quailes, 1 main draw) at the Aussie to have kept pace with last January and stay near the top 200

Bouchard need to take it to the finish line and be either the winner or finalist in ASB. She will be in the draw for many of the WTA main tournaments along with Australian Open!

Can't help rooting for the underdog.. Some decent backhands, footwork looks good. Her forehand swing still looks so uncomfortable/tight though, is that just the best swing for her physique, or is that something that should be fixed? Full disclosure, I had ten lessons a few decades ago..

[On Nike paring down their stable]

Who’s next? From what we understand, Genie Bouchard may also be a free agent when her contract expires March 1. And there might be a few more.

As it is, the Canadian former No. 5 has not earned any income from her Nike clothing deal for nearly two years. She’s in the non-guaranteed phase of her deal (which is fairly standard). And the drop in her fortunes means she has been at what’s called “100 per cent reduction” – i.e., not qualifying for any bonuses based on ranking levels.

Bouchard just could not get pass teenager Anisimova 6-2, 3-6, 6-4! Did better then expected. Good start for 2020 for 1st tournament but her ranking is pretty much the same - #212 afterwards.

Plays tonight a Chinese ranked in the 200s in 1st R Qs.
Named Xiaodi You.

Potential 2R opponents: Sramkova or Inglis
Potential qualifying competition: Bonaventure, Parry, Cristian, Trevisan

If she plays like she did in Auckland, she should comfortably qualify.

drops first set despite fighting off You's first 8 set points, number 9 was the charm

will fall to about 270 in the world if she loses this match and fails to defend just about all of 70 AusOpen points from last year, so let's say these next two sets are big

I think two more rounds for Bouchard to go to get into MD of AO! She could be a LL if she looses in the final round too and her names goes into a drawing to pick the LL!
