Loyalty is one the most important values in the materialistic world we're living in.
I think Federer has tarnished his image forever by leaving Nike for Uniqlo.
This move is really the worst thing he could have done, betraying most of his fans who love the Nike brand as it represents excellence, quality and winning attitude.
Always been a nike guy, from Jordan to Federer, all things nike.
You don't leave Nike and expect nothing to happen, especially when it comes to wada affairs.

This is the beginning of the end for Fred and his greedy godfather Tony Godsick.

Nike sure didn't show one of the GOATs much love, so there is no loyalty from manufacturers either. I admit it's weird not seeing Fed in Nike clothes-

I think the head of Uniqlo tarnished his image - and made a terrible signing. Sounds like he heinously overpaid (and whether he has the cash is immaterial) because he has a man crush on Fed. Fed is a bad signing: a) almost retired; b) has stated he will ‘become a dad’ when he does retire, disappearing from the public eye; c) not the right fit for the Uniqlo target demographic- young people. Fed sells to 35+ affluent crowd.

Uniqlo could have signed a rapper, movie star for a few mil and done better.

Will be interesting to see if Uniqlo actually makes some decent tennis designs AND makes them available worldwide in sufficient supply, something they never did w Nishikori or Djokovic.

seems to be working...i went into a uniqo store for the first time at south coast plaza this past sunday and bought $100 worth of stuff. told the cashier to thank federer for me coming in; he said he would although it was hard to understand with his accent. uniqo forever

It's only clothes and who knows maybe there is something bigger behind all of this. Maybe Uniqlo is willing to sponsor Federers Foundation or maybe Roger want's that more people could afford his clothes and items? I like Nike and I still buy the stuff but reality is that the price is out of the roof high and it is not normal anymore in my opinion. And let's be honest, Nike didn't offer Roger anymore high quality stuff like he had USO 07 and AO 08 for example. When was the last time when he wore something super unique last time?

So you're telling the world that if <insert name here> clothing/shoe company offered you $300,000,000.00 over ten years to wear clothes, you'd turn it down? Mind you, there is no performance clause, you get the money regardless. That's $30M a year....

And using the words "Nike" and "materialistic" in the same sentence is the very definition of both words. Nike spends probably $10 on a pair of shoes they sell for $130. Materialistic, Nike? You bet they are.

I have to say, if that's what you're saying it's very close to an IQ test and you're not doing very well.

:)

There was plenty of Djokovic's and Nishikori's stuff available in Australia.

But when you sell this stuff at a half of the cost of Nike, the stuff does tend to fly off the shelf.

Whereas the full-price Nike stuff languishes on the shelf while people try to pick it off months later at some clearance shop.

Agree. I cannot imagine paying full price for Nike apparel, when, with some patience, one can obtain for 50% or more off!

Nike didn't care to keep Roger really. They weren't willing to pay to keep him. It's not Roger's loyalty you should question, it's Nike's.

The OP is taking a bashing, mostly from people who cannot "comprehend how people are actually mad about a clothing sponsor".

Why is it so difficult for people to understand that we are all different? It's like some people can only ever understand the way THEY think and liking the things THEY like. Isn't it kind of obvious when you live as a human being on Planet Earth that we are all into different stuff? I don't listen to Justin beiber but I can "comprehend how people are actually mad about" different music and artists. How self-absorbed do you have to be to not get that?

I collect Nike shoes. Because i like them. I don't really care what other people are into but I expect it's something else.

Anyway what I take from the OP, is that by being loyal to only one clothing/shoe brand for his entire career, Federer gave off the vibe that he actually really did like the product. This perception is hard to come by. By chopping and changing sponsors you give off the vibe that you don't actually care about the product at all, you'll just wear the highest bidder.

Don't get me wrong, I completely understand the 300mill thing. But a change like this can subtly change a fans perception, rightly or wrongly, about an athletes authenticity of brand choices and authenticity is gold.

I can’t comprehend it because it’s ridiculous to be honest. Federer took a) the better financial deal, b) the deal with the company that wants to help his charity work, c) the deal that helps him expand his brand to new areas of the world and d) the deal that keeps him in tennis for longer (in some form or another)

Why a fan could be upset about this is not something I can understand because it is illogical not because I’m close-minded as you are making out.

I should have said I couldn’t comprehend why people could be mad about THIS clothing sponsor change because you’re right sponsors are important and had he gone from a highly ethical manufacturer to Nike (or Uniqlo) I could understand people being upset but this doesn’t make sense as there isn’t anything to be upset about here.

I don’t appreciate you making assumptions over my ability to feel empathy over this, it has nothing to do with whether I’m “self-absorbed” or not because whether or not the OP, you or I like Nike is completely irrelevant to the discussion over what the right deal for Roger Federer is. Why do you keep bringing up personal interests - I made no comment on the OP’s personal interests, I commented on their feelings surrounding someone else’s clothes so why would that be an attack on the OP’s interests and o

So, why are they mad that he likes other products?

Can't he like other products?

"Authenticity of brand choices"?

That ceased to exist the moment people started receiving money to appear with brand logos and in commercials.

There is still such authenticity, but it it doesn't have anything to do with brands.

Well for my part, I am not upset about Federer changing his sponsor. It's nothing to do with me or my life. Maybe there is a misunderstanding because, like I said, I completely get his decision to make the change. Having said that, I am mad about collecting sneakers, particularly Nike, so in a sense I am "mad about about a clothing sponsor". I'm not taking the word 'mad' to mean angry, I meant 'mad' as in "carried away by enthusiasm or desire : extremely or excessively fond of or enthusiastic about something", for example 'mad about horses'.

So I apologise, I thought that's what you meant, I thought you were saying "I can't comprehend how anyone could be mad (enthusiastic) about Nike"

Yeah, look, I said perceived authenticity. Of course it's just an illusion but when done well it's an effective illusion otherwise nobody would sponsor anybody. This perceived authenticity (perceived brand loyalty) is incrementally eroded with each sponsor change, but it's to the detriment of the brand not the athlete.

When was the last time you watched tennis match? Nike is generic sports brand that provides shoes an appareal to a lot of lower ranked players. They aren't anything exclusive both in theory and practically. Uniqlo's sponsorship is based on getting brand recognition, so their idea is to get the best/most popular players. The total opposite of what you are saying. Have you missed "Age of Ultron"? They also sponsor wheelchair players (Kunieda goat included) and events. Have yet to see non grand slam finalist in their logo, which can't be said about other brands.

This perceived authenticity (perceived brand loyalty) is incrementally eroded with each sponsor change, but it's to the detriment of the brand not the athlete.

You said "perception of their (the athlete's authenticity)".

The difference, while not very visible, because of the similar wording, is night and day.

In what you said in the post I addressed you didn't question how real the authenticity was (to you it was real).

It was the change of perception based on unreasonable weighting of motives of the player to go with a brand that was the focal point of your wording.

In this post you say that the authenticity was not real, which is different.

BTW, one can like a brand for the brand's contribution to the one's well being, and for satisfying his needs.

You are a shoe guy, so I hope you will understand the following example:

If I go to two different shoemakers that make your own last, which ideally would be a copy of your foot, do you love more one over the other, if they provide you with a shoe with the same comfort, but different benefits?

Say, you went with shoemaker 1, he charged you $3000 for his service and get a bespoke shoe, that is supremely comfortable.

Then you come across a recommendation for shoemaker 2, who also does full custom. You get a bespoke shoe from him that fits just as well, but at a lower price point.

The difference in price is your monetary gain (akin to switching to another brand that offers more money), and the comfort is retained.

Do you find your shoes from shoemaker 1 less comfortable/like them less, just because you found something cheaper?

I would say no.

You had your time with them, and ideally their comfort will remain the same, so they will continue to give you the same satisfaction as the new ones. That doesn’t mean that you didn't have authentic appreciation for what goes into them, albeit at a higher price point.

I get your stance, but as oftentimes it is the case when one writes short, it comes off as too black or white to accurately describe what is going on with the relationship Federer has with his sponsors.

Why do you care what Federer would receive, how he will earn it, or whether the Uniqlo get their investment back (I am always amused by some claims as though people know what the company X intends to do, but that is another matter)?

Isn't your interest as a consumer to get as much as you can for your money, or is that a secondary concern for you?

I think your loyalty to Nike is unfounded and is still focus back when Nike was at it peak, back; - when Phil Knight ran the company! Go buy a Nike $35 t-shirt! I gave up on Nike tennis shoes for the same reason.

First of all this Nike talk is cult like. But all this bashing of Uniqlo must be by people who havnt owned their products. I have 8 or 9 of their athletic tops and as I have said before on other threads beyond fitting about .5 size small through the trunk of the shirt it all fits great lasts forever. And I have large and XL tops and have no issue finding my size.

As far as Federer his kit doesnt look too bad I think his day out fit would do better with the colors swapped out with white shorts red top. His evening kit with light grey shorts white socks and it would be timeless. But at the end of the day Fed is wearing what he wants as far as colors.....
