I STUMBLE WITH EVANS: Pub Crawl to an intoxicating first title

Dan Evans is indeed taking part in this week's inaugural Challenger in Phoenix, Arizona. Interestingly, he does not feature among the top 16 seeds for the tournament because the entry is of such a high quality, with David Goffin being the top seed. Evans takes on the American Ernesto Escobedo in the first round with the winner of that match to play the no. 8 seed, Taro Daniel.

WOW! Didn't think the likes of a David Goffin would be entering a challenger...Understand he is probably looking for more game time but still a bit surprised....

All the 16 seeds except #13 Lloyd Harris played IW MD. Goffin, #2 Chardy, #3 Millman and #9 Gulbis used WCs offered to them. The remainder had direct entry listing, indicating this new Challenger tournament’s close proximity to IW will be the natural bridge to fill the gap in the schedule before Miami for any early exiting players. It is replacing Dallas, which had replaced Sunrise FL, in this time slot.

Phoenix challenger has a 48 draw and all 16 seeds top 100. It might actually be a stronger field than some 500s. If I wasnt lazy I'd make a thread about it.

Very similar to Newport? Tho there it's after Wimbledon, not in the middle.

It's a great draw for a Challenger but let's not get ahead of ourselves. It has "only" five players from the top 50. You won't find an ATP 500 with such a weak field, not even Rio (they had 4 players from top 20, 8 players from top 50 and 23 from top 100 this year). The field is also weaker than most 250s.

Newport is not a Challenger but an ATP 250. But yeah, Newport is one of the 250s that normally has a weaker draw than Phoenix this year.

The rain in Arizona has been falling mainly on Phoenix since the beginning of this week's inaugural Arizona Tennis Classis Challenger. One of the first-round matches still to be completed is that between Dan Evans and Ernesto Escobedo. Yesterday Evans won the first set, 6-4, before the rains came again. The weather in Phoenix is set to improve from Thursday of this week onwards.

So, Dan Evans has beaten Ernesto Escobedo, 6-4, 6-1, and is into the second round of the Phoenix Challenger where he will face Taro Daniel, the no. 8 seed, later on Wednesday.

Daniel too much for our Daniel, in straight sets. I’m guessing a bit of fatigue has set in.

Miami qualies beckons.

Daniel got booted by Bublik, 4&4 in the Miami qualies final round. Gotta stick around and pray for a LL.

Berdych withdrew today but I’m not sure what the timing is for that to promote a LL.

I believe Berdych is being replaced by a LL. Should be a draw from the higher ranked QR2 losers.

Because the qualifying wasn’t completed by the time of his withdrawal, there will be 13 players assigned randomly (12 qualifiers and 1 LL). Who the LL is will also be drawn randomly from IIRC the top 4 ranked players.

A good win for Dan Evans earlier today in the first round of qualifying for next week's Italian Open. The Englishman beat the no. 10 seed, Robin Haase, 6-2, 6-4, and on Sunday will face the no. 1 seed, Dusan Lajovic, for a place in the main single draw.

My Name Is Robin is reduced to playing qualis?

A very impressive win earlier today for Dan Evans over top seed Dusan Lajovic in the second and qualifying round for the Italian Open. The score was 7-5, 6-3. Cameron Norrie also qualified for the main singles draw in Rome by beating Nicolas Jarry in a third-set tiebreak.

Tomorrow (Monday) Evans will play Norway's Casper Ruud in the first round of the main singles draw.

Yep good win for Dan never saw him as much of a clay court player, maybe Fed gave him some tips

By losing to Ruud today, Barca’17 remains the only tournament in which Dano has won main draw ATP level matches, beating both southpaws Thiago Monteiro and Mischa Zverev to reach 3R and a straight set loss to Timmie. He then lost three consecutive 1R matches at Madrid, Rome and RG to Haase, Vesely and Robredo and won a single set in those losses.

Oh well, on to RG to pick up what funds he can, and then he can focus on the Grass season.

Yeah, I was surprised he chose clay at ATP level rather than the smattering of HC Challengers on the schedule but he did well to qualify at Rome after the fails at Barca and Estoril. Good prep for RG and perhaps with luck a softer draw.

He was outstanding yesterday and should have recorded a beatdown but couldn’t convert enough of the 10+ break points he had in the first set, then limped in the third. Clay is a bitc-h. Impressed with Ruuds clean hitting too.

Earlier today, between the rain showers, Dan Evans reached the semi-finals of the men's singles event at the Surbiton Challenger in south-east London with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Marcel Granollers. In the semi-finals Evans, the no. 4 seed, will take on the Romanian Marius Copil, the no. 6 seed. Together with Lloyd Glasspool, Evans has also reached the semi-finals of the men's doubles event after beating the Greek pair Nicholas Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokinakkis in the quarter-finals, 6-7(5), 6-4, [10-4].

There were two long men's singles semi-finals earlier today in Surbiton in very windy and cool conditions although at least it didn't rain. In the first match Dan Evans overcame Marius Copil 7-6(3), 6-7(4), 6-4 after being down 2-4 in the first set. Copil also led 4-2 in the second set before Evans broke back, but the Romanian was too good in the ensuing tiebreak. Both players were broken in their opening service games in the third set, and Evans saved two more break points at 1-2 before breaking Copil at 2-2, then holding to 4-2, an advantage he never lost.

In the other semi-final Victor Troicki beat Denis Kudla 3-6, 7-6(6), 7-5 after the American had come back from 2-5 to 5-5 in the third set. The Serb then steadied himself to win eight of the last ten points.

Apparently it's raining at the moment in south-west London, so Evo and Viktor Troicki have been left to kick their heels for a while. Maybe they're watching the men's singles final in Paris. It has been dry all day so far here in south-east London.

After his title success in Surbiton, Evo will rise to no. 70 when the new ATP singles rankings are issued on Monday. The Englishman has accepted a wildcard into next week's Challenger tournament in Nottingham where he was runner-up to Alex De Minaur in 2018. This year Evo is the no. 1 seed in Nottingham, so has a bye into the second round where he will play the winner of the encounter between Chung Yung-seon of South Korea and 17-year-old Jack Draper of England.

Just hope he doesn't drink it all!

This is something I am curious about...I wonder is he actually training harder than before? Is he much more disciplined than before ban? His physique would suggest not but don’t have a clue really...

There was no play in Nottingham today due to torrential rain, which stretched down to south-east England too. It's still bucketing down here in London as of 11.30 pm. Hopefully things will clear up a bit for tomorrow, but it's not looking great. At least they now have two retractable roofs out at Wimbledon...

Looking like it's going to be a wet one this year so the roofs, including the new one over Court 1, are likely to see plenty of action.

An improvement in the weather earlier this afternoon meant that it was possible to begin the first-round men's singles matches at Nottingham Challenger. Liam Broady, Evan Hoyt and James Ward all lost, but 19-year-old wildcard Paul Jubb beat the Estonian player Jurgen Zopp 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-4. For more on Jubb, see here: https://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/sport/other-sport/teenage-tennis-sensation-paul-jubb-2937512

Jay Clarke and Jack Draper play their first-round singles matches later on Tuesday evening.
