I STUMBLE WITH EVANS: Pub Crawl to an intoxicating first title

Yes, after beating Novak Djokovic, 6-4, 7-5, earlier on Thursday to reach the quarter-finals of the singles event in Monte Carlo, Dan Evans, and his partner Neal Skupski, have now reached the same stage of the doubles event after defeating the no. 3 seeds, ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek.

The English pair lost the first set 3-6, but led 4-1 in the second before being caught at 4-all. Their opponents served for the match at 5-4, but were broken to love, and Evans and Skupski eventually took the set on a tiebreak by 7 points to 5.

In the super tiebreak that ended the match the Croatian-Slovakian pair had match point at 9-8, 10-9 and 11-10, but couldn't close it out. Evans and Skupski eventually took the super tiebreak by 13 points to 11, and the match 3-6, 7-5(5), [13-11].

Evans future clay GOAT? Move over Musetti and Sinner, drop your Shapos and FAAs, forget about Karatsev, Evans is the new bandwagon guy. Apparently his new found form on the dirt is attributable to Monte Carlo's high quality, erm, party supplies.

On a more serious note, Evans backs up his win agains Hurkacz with a fantastic victory. His side of the draw is pretty open right now, I'll be rooting for him to get far.

Brummie Dan’s previous best clay result was R16 at Barca’17 (lost to Thiem), just before his bad boy suspension. Since then he had zero main draw wins, including last week’s schizophrenic loss to Musetti when he seemed ready to win from 1-6 6-1 only to get edged in a 10-8 TB third set.

Well done to Dan Evans on reaching the semi-finals of the singles event in Monte Carlo earlier today after a gritty 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over the no. 11 seed, David Goffin. Hopefully the Englishman won’t be too knackered for his doubles quarter-final later on Friday with Neal Skupski, when they take on the South African Raven Klassen and Ben McLachlan, who plays for Japan.

Seeing Dan lose the first set to Goffin I thought of course he's beating Novak and then losing to Goffin. Glad to see I was wrong.

Evans(26)-Zverev(6) coming up soon! Will another top 30 player beat a top 10 player in Madrid today? So far we have #25 beating #3 (Garin-Medvedev) and #22 beating #5 (Ruud-Tsitsipas).

Edit: alas, the Zedraffe beats Dan 6-3 7-6(3)

Already a pretty decent paycheck at the US open. His second round win over Giron in four sets guarantees him at least $115k. Next up, on Thursday: Popyrin, who just beat Dimitrov.

I'll say it again, I love how I can find this thread by typing Stumble Evans in Google :)

Do you think he would still be looking at financial side of game? Feel like he has done well in last year or 2...Think he has a sponsor now aswell....Obviously I appreciate he has not earned millions like some players but doing a lot better shall we say....In saying that travelling, bringing your missus with you everywhere all adds up....

Yeah he’s supposedly made $4M over his career, so at this point he’s probably not coming into tournaments with much concern about how much prize money he’s going to get. :) I’m just always amazed by the numbers at this level, so occasionally I look it up.

I think you make a good point though - I wouldn't say it was too long ago he was looking at his bank balance.....I'd say he is only getting comfortable now...He's had a dreadful summer (maybe due to Covid) but getting to 4th round here would be good result considering the way the summer has gone I think....

Taxes, agent cut, coach’s fees, stringing, trainer(?), hotels, restaurants, wardrobe and salon/spa for his better half. Out of the minimum $265K for 4R, Dano will probably net $150K. Once he pays our tab he’s barely 6 digits! :-D

He needs that upset vs Meddle for the extra $160K gross.

Agree totally - don’t think he is looking over his shoulder anymore but definitely not in the super rich category! A rough summer but I think he will be happy with 4th round here and I think he may have his highest ranking ever Monday week....Don’t think he has anything that can trouble Med I’m afraid...

If he beats Meddle I’m going to upgrade my vodka brand from Grey Goose to Chopin Family Reserve. He can handle my larger tab with all that extra cash.

I would actually fancy Dan more against Nole but let’s see! Think he is on track for ranking of 23 Monday week and I think he would please with that considering he got COVID during the summer….A good performance here would be great…

They are long shots to pass him but there are six players currently ranked below him still alive. Meddle looks too strong today for Evans to defend his position so he will have to hope those behind him stumble themselves.

Wonder how long Evans will stay with this coach. Hes staggered from one airport bar to another, rarely getting beyond R2, pre or post covid. All the big season highlights, outside of doing ok in slams, were when he didnt have a coach.

So which coach are you affixing blame to? He apparently split with Mark Hilton before AO and the one 250 that he played and won as his warmup to AO. That first title happened while in transition from Hilton’s guidance to a new Aussie coach that didn’t work out permanently. He then stayed abroad and worked with Argentine Sebastian Prieto for the truncated HC spring swing before focusing on clay.

Evans has clearly stated he only got as far on clay this year to beat a guy named Joe Kovic at M-C on his way to a first ever M1K clay SF due to Prieto’s influence but they were not entering a permanent partnership.

All I read at the time was that he hooked up with Prieto for the clay season, and they first hooked up at barcelona, the week after Monte Carlo. I could be mistaken, though. I had other priorities at the time. If Prieto was part of the team for Monte Carlo then he deserves huge credit.

Also, I've just had a look at his results and the string of early round losses did begin post covid. So I was probably being a bit harsh on player and coach.
