I think I'm sad - because I would have been so elated with the win

It felt like we were robbed.

So much build up to get to those match points.

I was watching with my wife when Federer missed his first serve at 40-15 and I said Federer is only 55-45 going to win this match.

She was surprised because Fed was up 40-15, but once he didn't make that first serve I got a baaaaad feeling.

Fed may have played better against Djoko then he did against Nadal, but against Nadal even after the 2nd set loss, I felt like Roger had it.

I never felt comfortable watching the Djoker match.

I suppose if Fed had bounced out in the Quarters we'd know his days of winning slams were likely done. But never having beaten Rafa and Djoker back to back and then having match points, winning more total points etc., we should be optimistic about his future.

All the reason for Fed to keep playing. It was a missed opportunity, but life goes on as they say. Just think about all the gloom and doom after the UO last year and after the AO too. Fed should retire. Fed is Finnish. Blahblahblah. He showed everyone that he can still win slams. I'm proud of that if nothing else.

Only if somebody will take Djokovic out for him. (which is highly unlikely)

He showed everyone he can still win Slams by.. Not winning a Slam?

Logic is something gifted to so few these days.
I hear you - to a point.

But, Federer had more then 1 Championship points (2). To me, that is evidence that he can win slams.

Multiple championship points on your racquet count as "can still win slams imo"

You wouldn't even be here right now if Fed had aced Djokovic at 40-15 so SHUSH!
here we go again with the hypotheticals.

He didn't ace Djok at 40-15.

Djok won the match.

Fed hasn't won a Slam in 19 months.

Thank me for being your brain.

Winning the last point is often the most elusive for some, considering Fed has squandered MP's in 22 matches in his career including 3 matches vs Djok, I'm not so sure he can win Slams.
The day he can 'win' Slams again will be the day he actually wins one again.

Historically, Federer responds very well to tough losses later, while still being as competitive as he is now is massive for a guy his age. It depends on how he reacts to this particular loss.

Because of these things, he shouldn't be written off until he actually retires. Three years ago I was sure he would be stuck at 17. But he had other ideas.
