I think I've finally learned how to serve

So today, I was giving it another go, trying to turn my old granny serve into something more manly.

I always thought I understood the throwing motion, so it baffled me why my serve was so weak. I also knew I had the athletic ability to hit big serves, as I've done it before, but only on occasion. Some days, when I felt really great, I could hit big serves. But then I always lost that feeling the next time, back to weak serves. Basically I got lucky on occasion, without really knowing what I was doing.

These past months I fixed my groundstrokes by swinging more early, as I was usual late. My technique had been ok for quite some time, but timing was the problem. That got me thinking, maybe I have to do the same for the serve?

I figured I might be delaying my swing too long around the 'trophy position'. I made a conscious effort today to go into racket drop earlier. What a difference it made! Suddenly I didn't feel rushed, could complete my swing in an easy, relaxed way. Much more power and spin, without feeling I had to do much effort. Even when hitting against the wind, quite a few serves made it to the fence in one bounce. In the past they would have fallen just dead after the bounce.

So now I'm really excited. I won't yet cry Eureka, I have a rule that you are only sure to have found the correct technique if you can replicate it three consecutive practice sessions. But I'm pretty confident I have found it. Can't wait to go on court one of the next days.

I want to address this post to @dgold44. I know he has been as desperate as I to learn a good serve. Hopefully this can help him :)

When you can hit a twist/kick five feet up on one bounce, into the fence, you know you have a good serve.
So you're saying I'm not there yet? :) Ye, probably, but I feel I'm on the right road. I can feel I still have a lot of untapped potential.

Good thing to hear, but now you drop your racket earlier, did you change your toss height? are you breaking up the motion of your racket in the part of drop the racket/trophy position.
Sorry for my bad english.. i hope you understand me.

No, I didn't change my toss height. I never had a really high toss. So I think in the past I would drop my racket but too late, and by the time I was swinging to the ball the ball had already dropped too low to hit it properly, forcing me to hit it with a bend arm.

I only changed dropping my racket sooner, it seemed to work.

Also my motion is quite smooth now, I slow down my swing a bit around trophy (makes for better rythm I find), but I don't pause in that trophy position. Actually I don't think much bout trophy at all.
