I thought Coco Gauff was overrated and overhyped?

Look I may be missing something I don’t have access to worldwide media 24-7 but I think most countries hype up their players. And anyone who thinks that the USA media is going to hype other countries players over their own, is just being silly. All countries hype up their athletes.
Go back a few pages and read. She gets SIGNIFICANTLY more hype than other American players, including those that have accomplished more than her.

... what I don't understand is holding that against her personally.

It's not like she has personally declared that she's going to win a truckload of grand slams through press conferences or media interviews, or written glowing articles about herself. She shouldn't be held responsible for what other people have saying about her, predicting for her etc.
Nobody is "holding it against her personally." I doubt anyone here is going to meet her in real life and tell her they think she is over hyped. This is a place to talk tennis, and we are talking about the hype in the media and amongst casual fans. Most of us actually feel bad for Gauff that she has to deal with this nonsense. It's probably hurt her more than help her (tennis wise, not financially).

The fans of coco gauff are race-baiters. For any non black person, this article SHOULD enrage you. This is exactly what the Wimbledon /USOpen were hyping.
I don't know what "The Grio" is, but that article is a complete and utter joke. I don't think anyone takes it seriously.

Probably cause she was 16 and winning matches at slams. Not sure why this is an issue

Read the thread title. Then talk to the person who started the thread, because they are the one creating the issue.

Anyway, how many years ago was that? And she only now, all these years later, won anything relatively important (and M1000) after hiring a new coach. Prior to that, she was indeed overhyped. It's not a problem, just stating the obvious...

16 year olds winning a bunch of matches at slams get hyped. That’s just reality

Yep.. Still is. LOL @ This mess. Still struggling with bums . Good old ESPN trying to find those Next Williams Sisters. I refuse to watch that trash channel with their agenda-driven garbage and its not just tennis either. They're just a terrible network with all sports

People just make their money off superficial BS now. Not merit.
Now? LMAO

It has always been that way. Marketing hype never been "measured" or "proportional" to tennis success or performance. Sharapova made more money than Serena from the moment she showed up in 2005 until she was drug-busted. And long before that Kournikova made more money than anyone on the tour (even tho everyone else other than her was doing all the winning).

The notion that Coco introduced some culture of merit-less marketing hype is inçel fairy tale. Marketing itself is not sport but capitalism. What gets hyped the most is whatever is presumed to be best selling.

Update:

Today Gauff takes over the #2 spot in the UTR world rankings for female tennis players, overtaking Sabalenka.

Why do people keep bringing up Kournikova (and now Sharapova). Everyone know's that they were popular/hyped/marketed for their looks. Nobody was seriously talking up Kournikova's tennis, and most also realized that Sharapova had some limitations that were going to keep her at the really good level, rather than great. What's different about Gauff is the way they talk about her tennis, constantly, as if she has already won 15 slams.

She is 19 and #4 in the world now. For gods sake no one is claiming she won 15 slams. You guys interpret commentators in a totally different way than most people.

Gauff smokes Ostapenko and gave her a bagel with whipped cream cheese where Iga almost got bageled by her and probably went to cry in the locker rooms afterwards.

It seems like any talk of Gauff is considered hype. She is having a good year with the improvements she made. Adding Brad Gilbert was a huge plus.
She's not having a particularly good year, she is having a very good month. Basically Brad has turned it all around for her. I know that makes some people uncomfortable...

And Ostapenko smoked Gauff at the Australian Open. What's your point? Tennis doesn't work that way, and Ostapenko most certainly doesn't work that way, either.

Thank you! I think you and I had this convo months ago in the WTA thread. Gauff was flailing. She was in the top 10 but at best was a top 30 player. Her record against the fellow top 10 players was horrible. After the French Open QF loss to Swiatek, Gauff had lost 7 consecutive matches against top 10 players. Every single loss was in straight sets. That's not good for someone who was in the top 10.

Now with Brad on board, she's seemingly turned a new page with 11 wins from her last 12 matches and finally broke her 0-6 H2H against Swiatek.

Let's see how she goes at the US Open.
But Gauff was beating those ranked below her with tremendous consistency, which gives her many opportunities to win titles. That's very important for long career prospects.

Gauff played in one final last year (French Open losing to Swiatek) to winning 3 tournaments this year, including beating Swiatek (World No.1) in a Ciny where she won. How is this only a good month?

She needs better media training for sure. While Coco says all the right things, a little bit of authenticity would do her good. The other day, after the match against Wozniaki, she said, "Caroline Wozniaki was such a huge inspiration for me while growing up". I found that particularly hard to believe. Come on - unless you are Danish, why would you say that? Coco had enough superstars around to inspire her. That comment just smacked of mindless PR and inanity. She could have just restricted the statement to saying - 'I respect her' or something on those lines. Net, she is trying too hard to create an image. I would blame it on not having the right advice. She needs to be more natural and express herself better

Oh yeah, she couldn't be an inspiration to Coco even though she was the number one player in the world because number one players are never inspirations to young tennis players.

She’s only 19. You can’t really draw conclusions at such a young age.

It reminds me of football fans writing off Xavi Simons because he struggled early in his career after the hype. He’s doing great now.
Coco is balling out now, just like Xavi Simons.

Let's hear it people - what are you going to say? It's only one slam, she needs at least 2. It was weak because she didn't beat anyone good. She's not going to win anything else. The good people she beat were playing like shi*. Someone else took out most of the good players. She still sucks. She's still overhyped. There's been plenty of players who have accomplished more by age 19. She still doesn't deserve the hype. She's on too many ads. She doesn't deserve to be on those ads.

C'mon where's the people who said she's overhyped? C'mon I want to hear you say that Cincinnati is no major accomplishment. That she doesn't deserve to be on ads. That she shouldn't be talked about positively so much. Where are all the people who said she's overrated? C'mon say something. Are you mad that she won?
I TAKE IT BACK.

She’s gone and earned my respect.

Great win. Good kid.

Couple things:

1. She's overhyped but thats not her fault, just the American media predictably trying to make her the next big star. They have been acting like she's world #1 for years now.

2. OP get off your soapbox. Cincy is a big title but hold off till she wins a slam before you jump up on here shouting ''What''.
WHAT!

Come on.. This slam was LUCK.. Lets be real.. This novel was more about SabaCRAPka self destructing like she usually does than Coco being some ATG that is gonna dominate the game.. Don't be stupid. Coco did nothing but just put balls back in play. Hell Coco would have lost to Keys if they played

ESPN have been trying to make Gauff happen for over 4 years now. It wouldn't surprise me if she bombs out of the USO "early" to someone like Andreeva, Collins or Kvitova after all the hype. This is the first slam that she's come into with a genuine favourite tag around her neck, and it's her home slam. Let's see how she manages that sort of pressure and expectation.

If Gauff is going to win a slam, she'll likely need to get past Swiatek again in the QFs, then potentially Rybakina and Sabalenka as well, so if she's wins it, she'll have earned it.
Did she earn it?

This thread is a little ridiculous. Yes, Cincy is a Masters 1000, but no, it's not some huge accomplishment, as these two WTA masters (Canada and Cincy) are pretty widely ignored. You know how I know? I'm a Camila Giorgi fan, and her Canadian Open Masters 1000 win a few years ago was the biggest of her career. And it got exactly ZERO attention, other than simple headlines. (And in some ways it was a more impressive win, due to a harder draw, and the fact that she probably puts in about 30% of the work/effort that Coco does, and didn't do the smart thing and switch to a good coach like Gilbert. I mean, imagine if Giorgi had dumped her dad for Brad some 10 years ago??)

And can we just talk about Coco's draw for one second? Yes, she beat Swiatek (who didn't play her best, more on that below), but who else? Sherif, Noskova and Paolini (Paoloini!!!) is a free ticket to the semis. And Muchova in the final, banged up and not wanted to be injured for the USO, isn't exactly stellar. (Giorgi's draw for her M1000 win, in case anyone cares: Mertens (9th seed) first round, followed by Podoroska, Kvitova (7th seed), Gauff (15th seed), Pegula and Plisokva)

Kenin won a grand slam at age 20, after an excellent season. Was largely ignored. See more on that below.

Go back and read my comments (OK, you will never do that, so I'll paraphrase for you). I've been saying for a long time now that she needs to spend some time alone on the tour. Get rid of her parents, get rid of the huge team/entourage, and just take the weight off of her shoulders. Pretty much exactly what she did.

If you ask 1000 random Americans to name a current American tennis player (male or female), among those that could name anyone at all, I'd bet about 85-95% would say Gauff's name first. Why is that? Kenin won a Grand Slam at age 21. Why is Gauff more famous?

Not sure I agree with this. She has always played worse in tight moments. And while she looked MUCH better recently (almost unrecognizable), I wonder if it will last. Players, especially in the WTA, seem to get into these hot streaks where they can do no wrong and ride a huge wave of confidence (see Raducanu vs Fernandez playing a US Open final), but will it last once some adversity sets in? Right now she is in the honeymoon phase with this new game of hers, but let's see...

This. And since nobody else has said it, I'll go ahead and do so: a lot of it has/had to do with the color of her skin. Right or wrong, there is some desperate need for some people to overcompensate and show favoritism to certain people from certain backgrounds. It was real with her, as numerous people have pointed out.

Yep. And one look at the volley Swiatek hit (or tried to hit) on match point is all you really need to know about how Swiatek was playing...
You tried to tear down Gauff and then later said Gauff being in Giorgi's draw made it a difficult draw.

well she won the slam.. Do I believe she will take over the game for years? No. That was a horrible level for a slam winner don't you think?

This is exactly what I was expecting people to say.

Why haven't you won a slam if it's so easy? All you have to do is dink it in and wait for your opponent to implode, right? All Coco did was play once a week for one hour for about 5 years and then showed up at the US Open and won easily because everyone else was playing horrible. She didn't beat players who play every single day of their lives for on average 6 hours a day since they were 3 years old. No, she beat horrible 3.0 players who were also injured and have major mental health problems, right?!
