I would like to make an announcement...

After spending years disliking Federer, I found myself driving home, listening to his match on the radio, and arriving at the realisation that what he's doing is nothing short of spectacular.

Yes, he still has lunatic fans who dress head to toe in Swiss flags, who frustrate me greatly, but if you can manage to block all of those out and appreciate him for his tennis alone, then I can't see how anyone could possibly dislike him. I feel bad that I have begrudgingly respected his achievements, but never warmed to him as a person. Not anymore.

From today I am announcing myself as a Roger Federer tennis fan, and I intend to bask in his magnificence until the day he hangs up his racquet.

Go King Roger! The game wouldn't be the same without you.

Ah, they all fall.
It's hard to resist being on the winning side of history.
I understand, although I still resist.
I'll die like Don Giovanni, without repenting.

Always knew you would convert. Welcome to the good side.

Murray's loss got in your head? Good that you realize he isn't that good.

It's possible to like most players if you separate them and their achievements from their respective fanbases. So good for OP I guess

After all, it's not possible to hate someone without having met them - this is different to "buying into the hype" which is media-induced.

I had a similar epiphany for both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. I still root against them hard against Federer, but I respect both of them greatly. And am glad they made tennis and my childhood so great.

Anyone who was a Fed fan prior to 2003 Wimbledon is a real Fed fan. Anyone afterwards is a bandwagoner.

I was a Sampras fan, and was heart broken to see him got beaten by Federer in Wimbledon. And then, one thing led to another...

Later that year, I went to watch the World Tour Final, and I told my friends about "that guy who beat Sampras in Wimbledon". Most of them had no clue what the big deal was.

But I used to tell my brother that I didn't like the pony tail guy because I wanted Roddick to win

Ok, chumps, it's time to join the *************. I'd like to receive my official ID badge from octobrina and will now spend my free time staring at pics of Rafa's derrière

I believe the initiation ceremony involves having a cup of tea and conversation about Rafa with Clayqueen...

The first time he caught my eye was in 2005~6. Back then he can turn defense to offense with a quick flick of the racquet. He was strong and fearless, and he dominated like no other.

It's a long and slow decline from 2008 and onward, if you can call winning 5 slams in a period of 9 years a slow decline.

But like a quality prize fighter, or an over engineered 1980s benz, he soldiered on whiling maintaining the essence of his top form during all these years.

It's always a high quality match whenever he played.

Glad you've come to like Federer despite some of his fanbase. As a Federer fan myself, I feel the same way about Nadal and Djokovic. I just can't understand how people could hate any of the Big 3, as they are clearly all such great sportsmen and likable people. If only there weren't so many biased fans on here, it would be a lot easier to be a fan of all three.

What possible reason could there be for not warming to him as a person? It's tough to dislike him, it's tough to be anything but in awe of the way he plays tennis... He just happens to have the most obnoxious fans in sport, give or take the New England Patriots. It's tough to watch him play, or want him to do well on account of them. If tennis was played in empty arenas without commentators, and you could block people on this board it'd be all good :p

Agreed. Being on tennis forums makes you rather tribal in your support of your favourites. People pick up on the most minor things, and the next thing you know there's a 200+ post thread on how player X supposedly slighted player Y. If I hadn't joined a geeky tennis forum I'd have probably liked Sir Roger from the outset. Anyway, better late than never.

You can block people on here. My ignore list is long and distinguished! :D
