If Berdych Wins - Greatest Achievement Ever at a Grand Slam

If Berdych defeats Nadal in the final tomorrow, would it be the Greatest Achievement Ever at a Grand Slam.

He would have beaten the 2nd, 3rd, and 1st ranked players in the world. The players he would have beaten have a cumulative 24 grand slams.

The closest achievement I think would be McEnroe winning the 1980 US Open defeating Ivan Lendl in the quarters, Jimmy Connors in the semifinals, and Bjorn Borg in the final. Lendl was ranked 6th, Connors ranked 3rd, and Borg ranked 1st. The cumulative Grand Slam total at the time of McEnroe's opponents was 15.

Also, Ivan Lendl winning the 1987 US Open defeating McEnroe in the quarters, Connors in the semifinals, and Mats Wilander in the final comes to mind. McEnroe was ranked 10th, Connors was ranked 4th, and Wilander was ranked 3rd. The cumulative Grand Slam total at the time of Lendl's opponents was 19.

I always that Hana winning the 85 US Open by beating Chris and Martina back-to-back in three set matches was one of the most impressive feats ever. I think it was the only time someone actually did it, although I'd have to check that for 87-89 against Graf's results. Of course, by 87, Chris had really started to decline, so it wasn't impressive.

Berdych's high strike zone and hard, flat strokes have always troubled Nadal. He's playing by far his best in this tournament. He definitely has a chance, but so did Soderling.

The uber hitter has to dial up his machine like strokes and go on a blitzkrieg to the net. Murry needed to sv and didn't do it enough.

I totally agree. Nadal is not going to give Berdych a bunch of balls in his strike zone. The courts are slow enough that Nadal will be able to move him around, pull him wide and frustrate the hell out of him. Nadal obviously has the ability to defend but he also has the ability to improvise. He is a great competitor who will do what it takes to win.

I have as much of a chance of winning tomorrow as Berdych does.

Yo if Berdych wins tomorrow I better see you on the pro tour the next day and if you are not at 10 by the end of the following year can you take your trolling self and never show up on these boards again. Since considering Berdych will most likely at least win 1 game thats better than the 6-0,6-0,6-0 beatdown Nadal would put on you.

If you just go by the numbers, I suppose so. But this algorithm is a little silly. Federer was nowhere near the level that got him those 16 slams, Djokovic seriously underperformed, and Nadal has only won 1 slam in grass so far. Also, I think Berdych will not win against Nadal.

I can't see Berdych winning this.
It's like asking a schizophrenic guy to disarm a time bomb in 15 seconds. He is just too much negative and unstable mentally to be there.

With that being said, yes, I think it would be one of if not the greatest achievement ever at any GS, given the mentality of both players.

Nadal is gonna frustrate the hell out of him.

I think Berdych can win. He looks to be in a place mentally that allows for him to handle Nadals crap. He loves high balls, the ball that he is going to have to NOT allow is the wide forehand to HIS backhand, ALL that often.

If Nadal gets that pattern going, its going to be Nadal in three or maybe four.

If Berdych serves very strong and wins serve easily and can hit his forehand down the line against the left handed spin, he wins VERY EASILY.

It is not EASY however for a right handed player to hit down the line, on their forehand to Nadals forehand or any lefties forehand. The junk causes it to go wide.

These two patterns are the keys to the match. If Berdych can avoid A and do B, he crushes Nadal. Its doable. Lets see.
