If Berydch wins the U.S. Open and defeats Djokovic in the final, will it be considered the greatest Grand Slam win ever?

He will have defeated 17 time Grand Slam Champion Roger Federer in the quarterfinals, 4 time Grand Slam finalist Andy Murray in the semifinals, and 5 time Grand Slam Champion Novak Djokovic in the finals.

The other two big Grand Slams of the open era are:

McEnroe at the 1980 U.S. Open - defeated Lendl in the quarterfinals (Lendl hadn't reached a Grand Slam final yet), 5 time Grand Slam Champion Jimmy Connors in the semifinals, and 10 time Grand Slam Champion in the finals.

Del Potro at the 2009 U.S. Open - defeated 6 time Grand Slam Champion Rafael Nadal in the semifinals, and 15 time Grand Slam Champion Roger Federer in the finals.

Honorable Mentions: Pat Cash at the 1987 WImbledon - defeated 4 time Grand Slam Champion Mats Wilander in the quarterfinals, 8 time Grand Slam champion Jimmy Connors in the semifinals, and 5 time Grand Slam champion Ivan Lendl in the final.

Ivan Lendl at the 1987 U.S. Open - defeated 7 time Grand Slam Champion John McEnroe in the quarterfinals, 8 time Grand Slam Champion in the semifinals, and 5 time Grand Slam Champion Mats Wilander in the finals.

Is the OP suggesting that a top 10 player like Berdych, long thought to have the potential to beat anyone at all, winning a slam would be a greater win than, say, a 16 year old Michael Chang beating Lendl and others to win the French. Dude, you see every last tree but, in typical obsessive fashion, have no idea where the forest is.

Well if Ferrer beats Djokovic, then no, it won't be the greatest.

Can't stand Berdych the whiner. Mad respect for his game, though.

If Berdych wins the Us open we know that men's tennis is in a pathetic shape

On the contrary, if someone like Berdych can finally break through - especially when he has three of the top four players in his way - and win a slam, that would be nothing but good for tennis.

Djokovic's last year's USO is the biggest, along with Safin '05 and Delpo '09.
At lease the ones that I saw.

Chang's victory was remarkable. What I am saying, is that if Berydch wins the U.S. Open, his opponents will have a combined 22 Grand Slams at the time, which would probably be a record for a player in winning a Grand Slam.

Chang - 1989 French Open - beat Sampras (0 Grand Slams at the time), Lendl 7 Time Grand Slam Champion, Edberg 3 Time Grand Slam Champion

Edberg - 1992 U.S. Open - beat Lendl 8 Time Grand Slam Champion, Chang 1 Time Grand Slam Champion, and Sampras 1 Time Grand Slam Champion

Did you happen to see the way he played Federer? That guy has the potential to beat any player (in history)

If... he gets by Murray, he will be a deserved finalist and will have earned the right to contest for the title against eith Djoker or Ferrer (Ferrer is also no easy task)

Forget about the slam win totals of his opponents...anytime you need to beat the #1, 3 & 2 seeds in succession at a major to claim the title, then you are in pretty limited company. After all, loads of the "experts" here at TT still bring up Nalby's feats from '07 at MS1000 events. If it happens, hopefully we will talk about it for longer than five years, particularly because of its improbability coming in due to a very lackluster summer for Berdy.
