If Federer win AO 2018, will he be more successful at AO than at USO?

I know it is a long shot for Federer to win AO 2018. However, if AO stays as fast as this year and Federer maintains healthy, I do believe he might win. Then he will have 6 titles at AO and 5 at USO. Well, considering Federer once dominated USO, it is kind of surprising to see him with only 5 USO trophies. Will it mean Federer is better at AO than at USO?

If he does win AO 2018, would it mean he is greater than Djokovic at AO? After all, AO is Federer's most consistent Grand Slam, where he has 11 straight semifinals. Also, it will mean that Federer would split his 6 winnings at AO between Rebound Ace and Plexicushion, which demonstrates his incredible versatility. On the other hand, Djokovic's peak level on plexicushion was also unparalleled and if he finds motivation again, he might add another one or two titles there.

What do you think?

I don't know if he will be greater than Djokovic, but to answer your question, he will be more successful at AO than USO, because 6>5. :)

He is not winning AO 2018, but if he does he will be more successful, and not only because of the number of titles.

The truth is that whenever Federer wins something big these days, the success will be tenfold amplified by his age and what it required to achieve it.

If Federer wins more Australian Open titles than US Open titles, will he be more successful at the Australian Open than the US Open? Damn, this is a tough one, let me think about it...:D

Comparing him to Djokovic is tough. It's another case of whether you take success over a longer period, or look how much he won when he's played so much less.

Personally, I'm inclined to go with Federer. 11 straight years of semi finals or better? Djokovic's best such streak is 3. Never been knocked out before the round of 32 in 18 trips there? In 13 trips Novak has been 3 times.

Well, considering how Federer lost all those AO matches to Djokovic, I always feel that he is vulnerable at AO to Djokovic even at his peak while he is unbeatable at USO at his peak.

That doesn't change the fact that he would be more successful at the AO than at the USO.

AO comes at a better time to perform better. Us Open is near the end of the season with two big events before it.

Without hesitation, the answer is yes. Federer has been losing at the US Open since 2009. Not consistent at all.

Why on earth do you think it's a long shot for Federer to win Aus 2018???

His days of being a cinch for a Slam - even Wimbledon - are long gone.... but there's a world of difference between "not being a cinch" and "a longshot"

Who has a better chance than him?

Nadal is deservedly the #1 and US Open champion... Frankly I'd still say Fed starts favourite over him in a hard court tournament (just as I would say Nadal is favourite on clay even if he wasn't #1)

The presently injured lot led by Djokovic are an unknown... I don't count them out but again, place their chances below Federer's

I don't see any outstanding candidates among the younger lot either

Furthermore, one assumes Federer will be as fit as he's likely to be at the start of the season

In my view, he will be the favourite, not a long shot. He's a "shorter shot" than anyone else!

All this, "You have to remember he's 36..." type talk is a lazy assessment made by people following basic guidelines (which seem to not infrequently not apply to Federer - and Nadal too for that matter) and probably aren't very good judges of the on court game itself (which is where the real evidence lies)

He is the best hard court player in the world!

(If he wins 2018 AO)....Will it mean Federer is better at AO than at USO?

Yes

If he does win AO 2018, would it mean he is greater than Djokovic at AO?

Yes

Even if Djokovic is runner up, that'd leave Fed with an extra 7 semis - that's a huge amount

On weight of achievements alone, that would put Federer comfortably ahead (for the time being)

I rate Djokovic's peak 'slow' hard court game
higher than Fed's but that's a different question than "who is greater AO player"

Fed can add 1 more AO before he calls it quits. But he may add 1 or more USO as well.

Lots to play as Fed is not going away till 40.

In my opinion Gaudio and Johansson are more successful at Majors than Davydenko and Nalbandian

If Fed wins the AO 2018, he will have become more successful at the Australian Open than the US Open, yes.
He hasn't won in NY since 2008, but won the AO in 2010 and '17 so he'll go in as defending champ.
Remember, he went 4 and 1/2 years from Wimbledon 2012 to the AO 17 to actually win Slams again and then won another at Wim17. He won 2 Slams in the same year at 35, almost 36 at Wimbledon.
This success was largely unexpected no matter what anyone tries to say now.
Roger's at an advanced age at 36 to still be in contention for the top prizes so he needs to be 100% fit, healthy and sharp if he's to win again. He'd like to be able to conserve energy in the first week and not be dragged through five-setters early on like he was at the USO '17.
All in all, Federer still has a good to reasonable chance to win it again. One of the favourites, far from a cinch, but far from a long shot either.

Why I believe Federer's winning of AO 2018 is a long shot is that he has to stay healthy and AO remains fast. Given Fed's age, nothing is a certainty for him. I tend to lower my expection for Federer when predicting his future peformance so that when he does win, it would be a glorious day.

Yeah, I largely agree. If he's 100% fit and sharp and makes his way through the draw in decent fashion conserving energy, he's got a good to reasonable chance. Hopefully the court plays similar to this year.

Fed is almost certainly not going to win the AO in 2018. We saw post-Wimbledon that his body couldn't withstand the rigors of winning 2 slams even with the clay hiatus. His form since July has been dismal (yes, even the LC) and his BH is nowhere near what it was in early 2017.

But if he does win the AO, then yes, 6 > 5 regarding the USO comparison.

Without hesitation, the answer is yes. Federer has been losing at the US Open since 2009. Not consistent at all.
Conveniently omitted is that he won it five straight years and was already 28 years old by 2009. Not consistent? Since 2009, he made two finals, including one at the age of 34 and was in the semis four times. That's dizzying consistency.

It's ok, some people believe tennis started in 2009, so everything Fed had achieved at the USO before 2009 doesn't count.

Agree. I do hope Federer will have a long rest after the season ends and stay healthy so that he might have a real shot at AO 2018.

The organizers have to be really stupid to still slow down the AO courts, especially after the high quality the AO has delivered this year, as well as all the injuries that have plagued half of the top 10.

Don't worry.He won't.

Even if he doesn't win, even with 5=5, AO is still his better slam compared to USO in my opinion, with his legendary 2007, 2009 matches, although he lost 09 yes, and legend killing 2017. Surprising but such a shame, he was once invincible at Newyork. And such a shame USO lost its edge from speed to excitement to everything else. AO is doing a much better job the last decade.

Yeah, the AO has had such high quality matches these last few years. I don't think I remember many quality matches from the USO. Fed-Djoko SF in 2011, Stan-Nishikori QF in 2014, Djokovic-Murray final in 2012. Are there others?

one more final, ****load more of SFs than djokovic - federer will be greater than djokovic, if he does win another AO.

even if djoko is the finalist, federer will have a sh*load more of semis.

Let's just wait for it to materialize.

This ulterior thread if it happens will be juicy. Djokovic fans will come fully armed an equipped for that. :D

I suppose if it happens Djokovic fans will have to defend his status as king of AO for Djokovic's chance of catching up in slams counts with Federer or even Nadal is slipping away.
