If Federer wins AO 2021

Beckerserve

Legend
Yes he is old. Yes he is past his best. But he has beat Nadal and Djokovic comfortably in the last 12 months. Nobody else has not even thiem who when he beats both its like a war. Not easy.
Federer is Federer. It would just be like him to break Nadal and Djokovic hearts in 3 months time. He is 4th favourite for the event. If he gets to semis i have a sneaking feeling he will win the event.
Lets not forget for 30 mins this year at AO he was routining djokovic even though he was injured. If Nadal wins tomorrow i will just consider it job done but means all to play for. Only an utter fool writes Federer off.
I also would caution both Nadal and Djokovic fans to celebrate (with gusto) if their guy wins but avoid GOAT talk. Federer is not done. Not in this era of lets be honest, average competition outside Nadal Djokovic and Thiem .

Why even discuss this now? Maybe he can come back strong but it's all speculation until we see him on a tennis court again live in the flesh.
Because many are hyping up tomorrow as if GOAThood is on the line. It is not and it is disrespectful to Federer. Im thinking here of journalists and that Ben bloke!!
Im not a federer fan but im just showing some respect as i know tomorrow one fanbase will be insufferable. Not on here as much but on social media it will be GOAT stuff non stop.

Fed is done other than maybe a magical Connor's like Wimbledon run or two. I do think he can be consistent, so not a mug, but constantly be edged out by a group of players in various 4th rounds and quarter finals and succombing to Nadal/Djokovic as a general rule in any SF.

His knees are wonky. Both of them.

He's on the verge of breaking down.

I predict 0 more Slams for Roger Federer (wow big shocker huh really going out on a limb here).

Very true. Although really unlikely, if he comes back completely fit and healthy and gets a Nadal kind of draw, he's an outside chance.

And I think you left one name off your list. Person who just took ******** to 5, 2020 USO finalist and the person who knocked Federer out of the AO last year.

I think Fed's best chance (and maybe only chance) at another slam will be Wimbledon 2021. But he'll be almost 40 yrs old then and who knows how he'll do coming back from injury. Plus Djokovic will likely clearly be the favourite.
Idk, if I had to bet I would bet that Fed stays at 20 slams.

Ye I'd say Wimby 2021 is his longshot. That's all I can realistically imagine.

Too much unknown with Federer. Every tennis fan should be hoping he comes back strong but it would maybe be his greatest feat yet if he manages it. Between Wimbledon, the Olympics and chasing the titles record he has much to play for next year.

Tsitsipas? Sorry i dont see him beating the Big 3 with that BH and his lack of court craft . Needs a new coach.

Thats my point. It would just be like him to elevate his legacy even more in 2021.

Agree. Federer delivered another piece of chokeness in the opening set. He was miles ahead.
FED-DJO 4-1* 40-0
Break up. Triple BP.
And lost 6-7(1).
In fairness he was injured so cannot say he choked.
Im a Nadal fan but i will not fancy a final with Federer in australia if its 20-20 or 20-19. The stress levels would dwarf tomorrow lol.

The only slam he’s winning again is Wimbledon imo. He’s done on HC

Won't happen. But naturally the stress levels would be higher. It would feel far less comfortable than the ridiculous comfort levels a Nadal fan can have in Nadal on clay in which he has provided almost only constant, reliable, dependable success for millennia.

Im not confident in Nadal tomorrow. Would have been if in June. Tomorrow i do not see how he gets the ball by djokovic.

He just needs to not press too early. He'll need to pick his spots, and attack timely and unpredictably. He's demonstrated this ability in significant abundance already at the tournament this year, even in these slightly slower, less lively conditions.

I think he would’ve retired if he had won that Wimby match against Novak. Honestly. Would've been perfect beating his 2 biggest rivals back to back

The Sinner match bothered me. Sinner was doing much of what Djokovic will but he lacked experience at crucial moments. Novak is hitting big off FH and his serve is outstanding. Rafa serve has gone backwards it seems.

Outlier match though in very cold conditions very late at night, and Nadal's worst stretch of form during the entire two weeks. He's allowed to have one stretch where he's mediocre. The danger is if Nadal comes out nervous and Djokovic comes out fearless and builds a quick 1 set lead with a break in the second before Nadal wakes up. In which case I'm still picking Nadal in 5 (this is what I voted in the match thread poll).

The oldest semifinalist in a hard court Major was Jimmy Connors, who turned 39 at the 1991 U.S. Open.
Federer will be even older than 'Jimbo' when the 2021 Australian Open begins.
:D

I think it may help Nadal to lose the first set. He wont be thinking 20 then.
When he lost to Thiem 6-0 first set at USO 2 years ago he won that match purely through being embarrassed so his nerves went.
If he wins 1st set tomorrow i fear he will get very tight hit short Djokovic makes it 1-1 and then the momentum shifts.

I don't agree but respect the outlook. I think to beat Nadal over 5 on clay you need to bank in a lead.

Comparing Zverev to Tsitsipas is an insult to Tsitsipas :)

Bro, Fed is done winning slams

I’m not hating on Fed but he won it twice when Djokovic went awol he can’t beat Djokovic there so he can win it just Nole needs to be taken out

'knees'

I have a bridge to sell you...don't think his absences have anything to do with his knees.

Connors was ranked #174 in the world, had lost all three of his matches that year, and was a wildcard entry. Fed is nowhere near that point and won't be for 5 years if at all.

Assuming that Djok is going to be there at the end for every Slam Fed plays is assuming a lot.

Alright - then sell me on the Fed story. What's his plan?

I think he took one look at the COVID situation and wanted no part of it. Knee surgery was a convenient excuse and helps him avoid the controversy since basically nobody is asking him about it.

A more cynical view would be that he is taking some time off to take advantage of the latest developments in organic chemistry.

But I think he could have played USO and RG, just decided not to take the risk and hope for a repeat of 2017.

I like your angle. I'll keep it in mind.

Fed has 1 left in him. 2021 AO or Wimbledon. He's had a lot of rest. And he's still a very dangerous player. Nadal can't beat him anymore. We all know that. And Djokovic can barely beat him. We all know that. 21 is the magic number. ;)
Huh??????????????????????????????????????

Yeah, Nadal and Novak can win 20 more slams each and they'll never be as good and have the level of skill Federer has. Slam count is just one factor, not the only one. It's the same reason i'd put Graf and Navratilova over Serena and Court far behind Evert and Seles. I look at tennis skill and level of competition, not just tournaments won. Fed's goathood is was cemented a long while back regardless of how many more tournaments he wins. That is, until i see another player that regularly hits shots nobody else can and through creativity introduces new ways of playing the game, new shots, new patterns of play, etc. Novak and Rafa are meat and potato players. They do nothing new, they just do the same old s-t better than others.

I’m with you brother. Federer still the best I’ve seen play the game.

Love Federer but at 40 there are too many guys that beat can beat him from the baseline. If he’s close to what he was in 2019 when he comes back he’s a contender at Wimbledon only.

In fairness he was injured so cannot say he choked.

Fed AO21?

He’d need that 2017 BH and he’d need that AO17 surface.
