If Hingis was so weak against big hitters, why is she equal with Williams sisters?

Serena leads Hingis 7-6.

Hingis leads Venus 11-10.

So Hingis is absolutely even in head-to-head.

I think it was more Capriati and Davenport who stopped her from winning slams. Hingis even beat Mauresmo in the Australian Open Final. Hingis lost in grand slam finals to:

Majoli.
Davenport TWICE.
Graf.
Serena.
Capriati TWICE.

So only one GS Final loss to a Williams. Not sure about the other times she's played Venus and Serena (in semis or quarters of slams) but I do remember Hingis in the 2001 Australian Open beating Serena in the QF and Venus in the SF. And then losing to Capriati in the Final.

She is only roughly equal in head to head since she retired before things got alot worse, and luckily for her missed almost all of 2002 with injury (and couldnt pass round of 16s when she returned late in the year) where the Williams really would have been spanking her.

All Hingis's comeback in 2006 did was allow the likes of Clijsters and Mauresmo to even up their head to heads with her, showing how even the WTAs 2nd tier had passed her outdated skill set by.

And in 2006 Hingis beat Sharapova(hard), Venus(clay), Ivanovic(hard) and Davenport(hard). So there was also proof Hingis was able to beat the big hitters.

Clijsters was the main problem,

Clijsters beat Hingis at the 2006 Australian Open QF.

Clijsters beat Hingis at the 2006 French Open QF.

Clijsters beat Hingis at the 2007 Australian Open QF.

Who knows what would have happened if she got past Clijsters in one of those, and there was a very close 3 setter at the Australian Open.

Hingis was a combined 1-11 vs Clijsters, Mauresmo, Sharapova, and Henin in her comeback. Maria came back from the shock thrashing by Hingis to easily defeat Hingis the very next tournament and in their next meeting after that one too. And after Hingis's really only huge comeback win over Maria she went on to be spanked 6-2, 6-0 by Dementieva the next day in the final.

Hingis's slam results in her comeback were:

2006 Australian Open- lost quarters to Clijsters

2006 French Open- lost quarters to Clijsters

2006 Wimbledon- lost 3rd round to an old Sugiyama

2006 U.S Open- lost 2nd round to Razanno

2007 Australian Open- lost quarters to Clijsters

2007 Wimbledon- lost 3rd round to Granville

2007 U.S Open- lost 3rd round to Azarenka

So out of 7 slams the 3 times she reached the quarters she lost in the quarters to Clijsters who was only the 5th best player in the World at the time behind Henin, Serena, Maria, and Mauresmo, and the other 4 times she lost early rounds.

And had she beaten Clijsters in the 3 semifinals she lost she still most likely would have lost in the semis of each:

2006 Australian Open- would have likely lost to Mauresmo in the semis who she was 0-3 against in her comeback.

2006 French Open- no chance at all against Henin in the semis on red clay. Maybe some bakery products in fact.

2007 Australian Open- would have been easily overpowered by Maria in the next round.

Clijsters only appears to be Hingis's problem since she played her the most times especialy in the slams. Clijsters was actually a good quarterfinal draw for a player seeded outside the top 4 at the time. Do note Kim went on to lose in the semis all 3 times after beating Hingis in the quarters, managing only 1 set in her 3 semifinal defeats.
