If it wasnt for one week Connors would still hold record

Federer's record streak ranked #1 ended this morning as most of you know. The interesting thing though is it ends at 237 weeks. Connors had his streak end at 160 weeks because Borg took the #1 ranking for a mere 1 week, then Connors regained it for another 84 straight weeks. Had it not been for this 1 week Borg was ranked #1 during this long period Connors would have been ranked #1 for 245 straight weeks. Just an interesting note.

Good catch. It must be noted however that Federer was nowhere near being passed as #1 (not even close) at any point, until June of this year.

It's an interesting point, but there are a lot of 'what ifs' that you could say about Federer too, that he could still be #1 now, so it's academic.

Coulda, would, shoulda.Fed holds that record, deal with it.

I am not disputing that. I just find it interesting to realize that his unbroken streak at #1 ended at a point that Connors would still hold the consecutive weeks at #1 longer if it were not for only 1 week at #1 for Borg. I figured he would be #1 at atleast deep enough into this year where he would pass that point but he hasnt.

clearly fed is better

I dont feel that way. This is how I would compare their games:

Serve- definitely Federer
Return of serve- Connors
Forehand- Federer
Backhand- Connors
Net play- Connors (what net play for Federer)
Movement- Federer
Mental toughness- Connors by a HUGE margin
Passing shots- Connors
Overall defence- Federer

Connors leads 5-4 in edges IMO. He would be an extremely tough opponent for Federer to beat if both were in their primes. Connors would probably be too tough for Federer to beat from the baseline, yet Connors came in much more, volleyed much better, and was much more of an all courter then Federer as well. Federer would probably need to have huge serving days to beat Connors.

in todays game net play is very rare, fed's an excellent vollyer, it just so happens that todays game favors baseliners, you can't blame someone for being so amazing that he can adjust his game, but then if he doesn't practice at the net, you can't say he doesn't have a net game

he beat pete in 01 with his net game

Another interesting note. Sampras is somewhat lucky to have the 6 consecutive year end #1 record because Agassi handed it to him by not playing for the rest of the year after a crushing USO loss.

Are you trolling on purpose? Federer wins every category there.

Connor does not lead 5-4 because that is your opinion and in my opinion, your opinion is wrong. So fed wins. Done.
