If nadal fails to win French open this year and federer wins wimbledon and/or Us open, then?........

Most likely the slam race will be over for ever, atleast in this era. What to say friends?
As if rafa won't win this FO, he will struggle throughout the 2018, and even if it does not happen, Nadal has not been successful in defending a hard court title, throughout the span of his respectable career.
So as if federer wins wimbledon (chances are lower than last year but he looks physically fine and 10 weeks of rest are maybe enough for refilling his tank once again) and by any luck, if wins USO (20-30% chances maybe)
Or fails in wimbledon and wins USO?!!!
Then the slam race will have full stop put forever for both rafa and roger, won't it??

I humbly request all of the Rafa, Roger and even Sampras/Djoker/Agassi fans :- please do a healthy discussion, put aside your prejudices; as despite being a federer fan, I have put my own prejudice aside while creating this thread.:):) actually I personally loved the slam race throughout the years...

If neither of them win another slam this year, or especially if Fed wins one more and Nadal none, then I'd call it over.
If Nads gets one, his small chance remains alive.

Not certain it would be over, but that scenario would be a massive blow to Rafa’s chances, almost but not quite terminal.

In such conditions, Nadal would require one or two multi slam years. (For the record, I don’t think this scenario will come to pass, I suspect Rafa will win FO and Roger may not win another slam this year.)

Even as it is, it seems that Nadal must win RG every year to stand a chance. That’s a lot of pressure...

The French Tennis Federation has confirmed that they will increase the time between points from 20 seconds to 25. Making Roland Garros come in line with the other grand slam events. For the first time in the tournament’s history, a timer will be introduced for fans to monitor how long players take.

Whilst allowing players extra time, officials are intending to speed up the start of matches. Starting this year, once the second player has come onto the court and gone to their bench, both players have up to a minute to go to the net for the coin toss. Then they will have a five-minute warm-up before being expected to start play within 60 seconds after that warm-up.

The rule for slams is 20 seconds unless the new rule is to extend it by 5 seconds. Of course the umpires will let the cheaters continue as in the past

Nadal has to gain one on Fed over the next three events to have a snowball’s chance. But a 3 slam deficit entering 2019 would still be very tough to match. Best case if Nadal is down by 3 entering next year is to tie Fed. And even then, Fed could still sneak one in and end it.

I really cant see Nadal winning 20 anyway. I give him maybe 2 more at RG max.
If Murray and Djokovic can come back to a good level ( not even their best ), then it will only become tougher as Nadals physical state deteriorates into his 30s.
There are plenty of guys who will beat him off of clay in slams, Wimbledon is never going to happen again also, so his options are limited from here in.
He will finish with 19 max, which is a tremendous career regardless.

One more from Federer will likely seal it no matter what Nadal does this year. Only scenario is Nadal going on a tear from this FO to the next. History says no way.

I’d love to believe that but this era is so weak that I’d be shocked if Rafa doesn’t win at least 2-3 more RGs.

If Nadal wins two slams and Federer wins none, Nadal will catch federer, But if Federer defends Wimbledon the race is over , If Nadal wins the RG and Federer doesn’t win any slam I can see a small chance of Nadal catching him, But until some NextGen Big player comes, Everything is possible, The draws this days are not very hard with AO 2018 , USO 17 and W 17

Sad to say, I can see Nadal not winning the clay this year and Fed not winning Wimbledon. This would be a bad year for tennis if that occurs.

How so? Wouldn’t it be bad for tennis if the geriatrics still continued to win? I love Federer (and Nadal to a certain extent) but tennis needs to move on eventually.

Just don’t know how anyone can say that with certainty when we’ve literally just seen Federer win 3 post-35. Any other opponent than Djokovic in those finals and i’m sure Fed would have 6 titles post 33 right now...

True point. I would like to see the dethroning of Federer and Nadal. I really like those two, but I would like the changing of the guards. It would be better for tennis that way.

Federer isn't winning 2 more Slams this year (I give him a decent chance to win 1 but 2 is out of the question) and Nadal isn't catching him in the Slam count no matter what happens.

The slam race was over when Roger won AO18.

The chances that Nadal, with his playing style and injury troubles, will be the first player in history to win 4-5 slams post age 32 is close to zero.

I remember a WHOLE lot of people was saying that about Djoker in early 2016 too...

History usually repeats itself, which means your peak is usually over at 28-29y, and you dont win many slams after 31-32y... It will probably include Rafa as well...

Never say over until the Capy calls it quit ;-). With this field, there's no saying he can't sneak in the occasional slam here and there if he remains healthy enough to play.
That said, a 5 slam lead after this season would be a massive hurdle to climb.

There are a couple different scenarios that could play out.

Nadal wins RG, Federer wins W and USO
- Obviously would be huge for Federer.

Nadal wins RG, someone else wins W and USO
-Basically nothing changed.

-Someone else wins RG, Federer wins W, random USO or Someone else wins RG. Federer wins W and USO
Would be disastrous for Nadal.

Nadal wins RG, USO. Federer wins W
-Pretty good hold for Nadal after the AO but nothing changed from the beginning of the year.

Nadal wins RG, USO. Someone else wins W
-Would be huge for Nadal. Only two behind. It would set up a great opportunity in Melbourne to really make things interesting.


I think it's a pretty safe bet that Rafa is winning Roland Garros. After the AO, I was pretty convinced Roger was going to win W. I still think he's the favorite but after watching him at IW/Miami, you could see the age showing. Now I wouldn't be surprised if someone else won Wimbledon. The US Open is a complete crapshoot, I would favor Del Potro as of today but there are obvious concerns about his ability to win 7 best of five matches.

He would still need to win three, not two, to top Federer in that case. Merely equaling Fed's majors count would still see Fed regarded as GOAT by the majority of pundits owing to all the other key metrics he owns Nadal in.

Yeah, I echo with a similar sentiment.

In fact the same sentiment.

At first I thought, WTF, slam race is all but over as it is. Another one by Fed puts the nail in the coffin.

But on second reflection;

a) I hate that guy Rafa. I’ve grown to like him in the same way you grudgingly enjoy a newborn nephew that smiles after peeing all over you.

b) who are the other contenders? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

Well, he could, but I’m not gonna bet everything on it. He’s being pulled away more toward his family, vacations and appearances than last year. Yes he did the same thing at the Rogers cup last year as he did this year in Indian Wells and Miami (went on vacations and tried to wing it, or play himself into shape, lost, and then came on strong later at the USOpen). But, The other players have gotten a little stronger - Delpo, Cilic, Zverev (he was tough all tournament), Nadal (he should be healed up from his strained hip. and ready to play). Will it be that bad if he doesn’t win and edges toward retirement? Let’s be honest and not bury our heads in the s and, it’s getting time for him to retire. If he wins, great. If he doesn’t, then that’s okay too.

The opinion of said punditry would be a lot more split than you think should they wind up tied.
