If Nadal gets between 16 and 18 slams does that make Laver the GOAT?

Federer is generally considered the GOAT due to ALL his records, 17 slams, 302 weeks etc.

However there is a lot of talk of if Nadal keeps winning he will be the GOAT.

If Nadal gets 16-18 slams that won't make him the GOAT but it may just stop Federer being the GOAT.

Is Nadal really going to get 300 weeks at #1?

If Nadal wins 16+ slams so soon after Federer does, this really hurts Federer's GOAT claims.

Would this make Laver the GOAT and even bring Borg and Sampras back into the conversation?

You got it wrong. If Rafa gets to 18 and adds some other records, we will just have two goats. Simple.

We will call both of them the greatest.

I cant believe I am saying this, but for once I might agree with you.
Infact, I have always believed this.
Nadal with one more AO(if not already) will invalidate Federer's Goat claims with his H2H. It will also bring back Laver, Sampras and others back to the table.
I believed Sampras was dethorned in a hurry. At 13 slams, eveyone thought Federer will go past 20 slams and jumped the gun. After what happned later, with just 4 slams more than Sampras (the mental Goat), I think everyone will revise their all time lists.

What a ludicrous argument. If Fed is the GOAT, and if 16-18 slams would make Nadal greater than Fed, then obviously Nadal would be the GOAT.

But enough of this. He's got work to do.

Keep telling yourself that. Whatever helps you sleep soundly.

There are no shortcuts to success. It has to be earned.

15 with H2H or 16 with 10 FO or 17 with Olympics Gold + Davis Cup - does not make one a GOAT - these are all ways people delude to 'console' themselves.

The only numbers that count is the final Grand Slam Finals wins.

Why is it so important that someone gets to a certain amount of semis if he doesn't seal the deal and win them all? 2nd place is the 1st loser.

ROTFL if Federer is really the GOAT than if Nadal reaches 17 or 18 slams, he will be considered the GOAT hands down whether Federer fans like that reality or not. At the very least the general consensus will be Nadal >>> Federer at that point. Nobody is going to consider Federer better than Nadal if Nadal has as many or more slams than him given their head to head history. If Laver were to the GOAT in that case, than that is saying he already is (probably true in reality). Stupid thread all around.

At 18, he can be the GOAT. No way at 17.

H2H is a statistic, not a record.

They don't need to. Let the stats/numbers do the talking !

How convenient for you that there were no official rankings before 1973, and that just counting official majors by themselves was not as reliable a method until 1983 at the earliest.

This concept that if you excel it proves someone else is the best is new to me. If you mean that it would prove Fed is not GOAT fine, but wouldn't that make Rafa the GOAT? It looks as if Rafa can never be GOAT in some people's minds.

Rosewall, Gonzales, Laver, and even Tilden are all huge victims of this. Gonzales, Laver, and Tilden in reality were #1 for more time and more years than either Sampras or Federer. Gonzales, Tilden, and Rosewall would also both have over 20 slams today had it been todays format with all careers of Open tennis and slam playing, and players playing all 4 slams each year. Laver would be more in the range of Federer's 17 but with 2 Calendar Slams would be considered superior to Federer, Nadal, or Sampras as well.

GOAT train left Sampras station long long time ago. Borg rein at GOAT lasted may be a bit more than a heart beat.
No, they no longer belong in GOAT conversation.

If Nadal wins that many slams, then Nadal/Roger/Laver can be part of discussion. Personally at that stage, Rafa Nadal would be my GOAT. Till then, Roger is GOAT.

So if i understand well, Roger is the GOAT right now but if Nadal wins 3 more grand slams, fossil Laver will become the GOAT ?

Does it even make sense or is it just me ?

If Nadal wants to be hands down GOAT he needs the following:

1. 2 calendar slams at least Like Laver
2. 200 titles or better like Laver
3. 6 year end #1s like Sampras
4. 8 years at the top of tour like Pancho and Sampras
5. 22-23 slams or better like Rosewall.

... Good luck with that

But no ranking system open to interpretation, which can get fuzzy. Unlike the official system every player knows they what they have to do, and the points distribution are set in place.

Also how do you deal during the pre-open era when there was a split fields? Do ranking only applies to the pro and not the amateur circuit?

Official ranking is clear to everyone, there's no controversy.

When Nadal fans (mostly bitter Sampras fans ;-) ) started brandishing the H2H to counter Fed's GOAT status, they never really said Nadal is the GOAT, but just that Federer couldn't be called GOAT because he had trouble consistently beating a certain player. According to those people who trash Federer, a GOAT is someone who should be able to beat anyone, anywhere, all the time :)

What people forget is that there is no fixed criteria set by anyone to define GOAT and hence there is nothing absolute about it. No player is perfect and everyone's claim for GOAT can be contested with some statistic or the other. It is just about who has the maximum accomplishments, not about who has every accomplishment.

There is no official ranking though. That is why there are discussions about who is the best, and it isn't just a stat game. My only point was that it is pretty much impossible to compare stats like slam titles or time at #1 for pre Open players to today, or even each other. Otherwise Roy Emerson would be the 3rd best player ever behind Federer and Nadal. Yet obviously that would be ridiculous to suggest.

So.... how many double and mix double slams go-nads and bag lady have?

How many years were they sidelined at carreer prime?

Yeah.... thought so....

So basically the OP is saying that if Nadal gets to 16-18 slams it invalidates Federer's career and is own because two people being so great only 5 years apart means the era is super weak or easy to dominate?

The simple explanation would just be that those 2 players are extraordinary and happened to come along at around the same time.

1.Fed has all of this, when you put things in context. Calendar slams are tougher to win today, I don't think Laver wins one either. Specially against a clay goat. Also I think with 3 grass majors and no Rafa, Fed wins CYGS.

2.Also number of winning tournaments doesn't hold any value. It's how important those tournaments are. Fed could win the equivalents of ATP 250/500 too if he wanted to.

3.Fed has more weeks at nr.1 and has more consecutive weeks at nr.1. This is as good.

4.Fed has more than 8 years at the top.

5.If you count pro majors, WTF titles are equivalents, so Fed has 23 major titles.

So, Fed covers all this points.

Rosewall's majors include amateur slams and pro slams, so split fields where either the best players were missing or majors with few rounds and no depth. Equating his 23 as full majors like Federer's slams is dishonest.

As for Sampras's 6 YEC#1's, all the years Federer ended the year #1 he won atleast 2 slams. In 96 and 98 Sampras won just the one slam each year. Sampras benefitted from not having a solid and consistant rival in those years.

This concept that if you excel it proves someone else is the best is new to me. If you mean that it would prove Fed is not GOAT fine, but wouldn't that make Rafa the GOAT? It looks as if Rafa can never be GOAT in some people's minds.

It's tough, when Rafa trails in most important categories.

W titles (that's the holy grail of tennis)
Major titles
Rankings

For me, he has to equal/surpass two of those, to be considered.

Or at least do something special, that can compensate for those.

So, I find hard to see someone with 100 weeks, 13 majors and 2 W titles as the goat.

At 18, he can be the GOAT. No way at 17.

H2H is a statistic, not a record.

h2h is meaningless but the media loves it. they like to make a "duel" out of tennis.

I think even with 16 nadal would be seen as the GOAT by most journalists and certainly at 17.

right now it is clearly fed.

Didn't work out this way.

But the argument was sound, in theory.
