If Nadal suddenly withdraws from FO, will Federer change his mind...

At the moment Nadal seems to be the only threat to Federer, Djoker and Murray are struggling to find their form while the rest is not worth being mentioned.

Or CYGS is nothing special to him?

He could ask for WC or SE (would first introduced at GS) and some poor french like Quentin Halys or old man Julien Benneteau would be stripped of their.

I reckon Fed can fancy his chances, since Nole is indifferent these days, i wonder how much shock therapy will be fruitful in coming months, Andy still has not yet recovered that he became no 1(pun intended ;))

There are lots of players that are threat to him on clay besides Nadal. He lost to Tsonga in 2013, Gulbis in 2014 and Wawrinka in 2015. There's no way he was gonna grind down a player like say, Thiem who is playing great atm on clay in 5 sets.

1 Federer is not playing the French because he thinks he can't win it

2 he thinks he can't win it because he thinks Nadal is unbeatable

3 ergo, if Nadal is out of the way, he would think he could win it

4 hence, he'd play

That's what your getting at? I'm leaning towards agreeing

What I'm curious about is to what extent is his decision specific to Raphael Nadal?

IOW, if it were Goffin or Thiem or anyone but Nadal winning everything in sight with no apparent difficulty. .. and Fed felt he couldn't take the guy... would he have still pulled out?

What if it were Djokovic or Murray - guys Federer has plenty of history with - garnering Nadal’s present results... would he play then?

I don't know

Roger can get beaten by anyone on clay now. He is doing the right thing by not playing. Yes, the tournament will be uber boring without him. But he needs to focus on his real goal. Wimbledon title number 8. He must not take his focus off of that. He is not 26 anymore.

Going by your logic, Fed should have never played the AO. He had no match practice to begin with and all the players he had been losing to for the last 7 years like Djoko,Murray, Nadal, Seppi were all in the draw.
