then it's over

He'll surpass Federer then. Won USO, was in final of AO and appears to be in best hard court form of his life. He'll have two hardcourt slams up next, including Australia, where he will be more hungry and motivated then ever. Then he will be going for 10 at RG 2015.

At 15 he'll be too close not to put out all efforts in, I think he can squeeze out 2 more years of being at the top or close to it (regular threat and mainstay in semis/finals) and will do anything to get the record when he's that close.

Of course we're only at round 2, but I am very impressed he survived them. Djokovic I still think is perhaps the slight favorite, but I am liking Rafa more each round. It could be an RG type scenario where if Rafa makes it to the final, then he might become the fav over Djokovic

This Wimbledon is crucial! I'm so excited to watch it and witness a part of tennis history---my gut feeling is Rafa will do it and take one more important step to the pinnacle.

parts of Nadal's game have looked absolutely devasting these first two rounds!

his FH is flying off the court! great penetration and acute angles!

He's looking very good, and its only the first week.

however, his movement looks awkward at times as well; so who knows...

If Nadal wins this Wimbledon then he will be exactly on same slam count as Federer was at the same age in 2009 when he also won his 15th slam at Wimbledon. So relax guy!

If Nadal doesn't win then he will be behind Federer unless he can win USO which Federer didn't in 2009. So there you go.

Whoa...hold your horses...

It's only the 2nd round. And besides, even if he won Wimbledon, he'd only have 15 GS so how would he surpass Fed?

So many here who are so over reactionary.

If Nadal loses a point: "he's finished!! LOL!"
If Nadal wins a point: "Uncle Toni's probably giving him signals....Nadal's cheating again!"
If Nadal wins a match: THIS THREAD e.g.
Had Nadal lost today's match: "He's finished!! LOL!"

We're still in the 1st week. Let it play out and let's hope that the big boys (Fed, Nadal, Djoko, Murray, Raonic et al) move on to the 2nd week, setting up some great quarters/semis/finals matches.

It's what's good for the game.

Nadal has required 4 setters to win his first two rounds. Rosol had set point to go up 2-0 sets..

Am I missing something here?

was expecting these types of responses...it's just an observation mate..also I really felt like first couple rounds were the most danger..if he wins he will have 15, that is too close to not think he will get it done @ that point.

So many here seemed scared to "jinx" or be "reactionary" or whatever. I just like to say what's on my mind.

Second week worn-out grass suits Nadal very well. Murray out of form, Djokovic isn't doing well in Slam finals, and Federer is too old. Not saying Nadal will win, but he's probably the favorite.

What difference does it make how many sets he won his early rounds in? He won didn't he?

He has winning h2h records in slams vs Federer, Murray and Djokovic. If Nadal reaches the second week he is a strong favorite to win the title. It is what it is.

Sure, the match was tight, but Rosol was hot, and Nadal showed a very high level of play in the last two and a half sets.

He served his best in months, he bent his knees a lot on the BH side (something he didn't do in the Klizan match), his return improved, he flattened a bit his strokes, he sliced the BH... in short, he showed all the tools he used to win in grass in the past.

He's adapting to the grass again, and he's obviously highly motivated.

Exactly. IMO, the toughest match from here on is the QF versus Raonic/Nishikori. By SF , it is just green clay.

If Nadal wins this Wimbledon, he would still need 3 more majors to eclipse Fed. Long way to go.
On the other hand, if Fed wins, Nadal can retire right away after Wimbledon.

If Nadal doesnt win, he should be upset now

- Novak on grass is not a contender
- Murray , just coming back from injury and losing to Worm at Queens
- Old Rogi
- Early round threats seen through
- joke of a 3R/4R to follow

Yep. It will be another wasted opportunity for him to lose another slam while he is still operating at close to a peak level. He only has a certain window of opportunity to win some more slams so he needs to take advantage of it now.

Nadal is at least 5 years past his grass peak..

That levels the playing field. Nadal is 5 years past his best on the surface and playing on one knee with a broken back. See how easy that was..

In all fairness you could say the exact same thing about Djokovic and Murray.

Nadal has a golden opportunity to make the head to head 24-10. I hope they meet and Nadal thrashes Fed once again. That will show everyone who is the grass court King.

Exactly. How else could Rosol and Klizan manage sets against Nadal if he didn't have one foot in the grave ;)

Federer will always be the grass court king. Nadal isn't even on the same wavelength.

I suppose you said this about 'losing the window of opportunity' and not a 'Wasted chance'.

It is an upset if Novak or Murray win Wimbledon, whereas Nadal is expected to win at this juncture.

Not really. They don't have the same momentum in slams that Nadal currently has and they are not chasing Federer's slam record.

I meant more in terms of the wasted opportunity part. Why should winning Wimbledon be more important for Nadal than it is for Djokovic or Murray? I'd imagine they'll all be pretty motivated.

I only meant that since Nadal is chasing Federer's slam record it would be a huge wasted opportunity for him if he loses this slam just as he did the AO. He will start to run out of opportunities as he gets older and older.

Just like Sampras never surpassed Borg despite having 3 more titles, Nadal won't surpass Federer just by having 1-2 more slams.

Federer's domination for 4 seasons is something Nadal only did once.

I have heard this thrown around a lot in these parts of the forum, but who exactly is going to prevent Nadal from reaching the second week ? Raonic/Nishi in the QF won't be a threat IMO because for one the court would have considerably slowed down by then and when those two meet in round 4 , the winner of that match is likely to be destroyed in a 5 setter with maybe an injury thrown in.

Worth remembering that there is a chance that Nadal will be stripped of a number of his slam titles when all is said and done.

Nadal has turned me into his biggest fan recently. If he wins this Wimbledon, which he will, I will celebrate. I hope he wins 9 Wimbledons in total. You wouldn't be able to get enough of Nadal. :)

A Spanish judge ensured that no Spanish sportsperson would suffer this fate by ordering destroyed many blood samples connected to the Fuentes trial. Not that I'm suggesting Nadal's was in there, but it hasn't helped his or any famous Spaniards. With that one action, she ensured that speculation will remain forever.
