If Nadal won 1st set...

Nadal gets pummeled in the AO 2014 final.

Gets injured.

Nadal gets pummeled in the USO SF, his injury becomes unbearable.

1) Nothing to see here.

2) omitted the quotation marks for fun

At the end of the 2nd set? I doubt it but I don't think he was in good enough of a shape for another brutal match. As long as Delpo managed to prolong it (ie. not lose in straights) he was winning that semi IMO.

It was basically a reverse situation to their last year's USO semi where Delpo had nothing after the 1st set.

They have played three USO semis, and all three times, both players were not fully fit.

Which means Delpo leads 2-1 at the USO, a bit of food for thought for the Nadal fans.

Really though, it's a part of the game being fit. Why it's hard to draw conclusion from any specific H2H, tennis players contest in hundreds of matches over the course of their career.

what i heard him say was "i have lost 4 matches this year and two i had to retire from" cant remember where i seen it but the vid is out there

It is from his post-match press-conference around the 6.50 mark.

A little bit further in the interview to a question whether he thinks that considering that top players like him, Federer and Del Potro went throuhg many injuries to sustain their level, does he think that that is the reality of the modern sport of tennis that the players have to accept, this ridiculous person has the audacity to say the following:

"It is not fair to compare them (Federer and Del Potro) to me. You can go to the History how many Slams and Masters thousand I missed and how many they. Sorry, but it is not a real comperation".

He would still have retired, as even if he was 1-1 in sets, he was always going to lose with that injury. He knew it, therefore no point going on.
His form looked his best since Wimbledon IMO at the start of the match. We were in for a hell of a match, but Nadal wasn't in any condition to go another 5 sets.
