If no majors are played in 2020 it will crush Novak’s chances of catching Fed

He will be approaching 34 years old with potentially no competitive matches under his belt in almost 12 months. His style of playing backboard tennis and long points will become harder and harder as he gets older. Fed has relied on quick points and aggressive tennis to allow him to play competitively deep into his 30’s although I see this break being a gut punch to him as well. Theim and the other youngsters will finally get their opportunity to start racking up majors.

I was not speculating on Novak’s thoughts. I was making a generalized statement on how this will change the landscape of the majors race.

It will hurt Rafa too. Obviously to a lesser extent as he is only one behind.
But Rafa could very well have only one or two French Opens left in him. And he is not a threat at Wimbly...And struggled to win US Open hard court. Likely his last hard court title..

Djokovic fans have been telling us since 2011 he will effortlessly crush all of Fed's records, play until he's 40 and end up with 25-30 slams. So three lost slams in 2020 shouldn't mean a damn thing. He'll get the CYGS in 2021 and steamroll to 30 slams without breaking a sweat.

That's what I read here, day after day. Must be true!

Nah. He'll be just fine to crush next Gen mugs.

Everyone will always remember that Federer had the most GS titles due to his incredible luck in the end caused by coronavirus. That being said and mentioned in every context of GS discussion will completely make this whole race void. But honestly who care now when millions of people are under serious threat of dying in pandemics. There are more serious things in the world than guys shooting rubber balls at each other. Getting millions for this c*ap while essential medical facilities in the world are crumbling. One tennis player being paid so much more than scientist and doctors for s*it they do. Hope this mass going on now is a true renaissance in people's thinking and that human kind will now truly value real heroes in their lives and not entertainers and celebrities. All is done purposely to throw sand in eyes with these unimportant professions because of marketing and sales whereas the society neglects it's true needs. Wake up people!

Or perhaps it will help his longevity, with almost a year without any the wear and tear of the grind of the tour it might add a year onto the age he can keep being a grand slam contender...

Slams won at the age of 28-34:

Djokovic 9/20 (45%)
Federer 2/28 (7.1%)

If Federer won 3 slams with match points to win another at the age of 35-37 I don't know why Djokovic couldn't win 4 at 34-37.

Why don't those doctors and scientists become tennis players too then? :p

Sorry to be *that guy* but the top tennis players do deserve to earn more money than doctors. Unless you do not believe in the free market.

"Deserve" might be the wrong word (implying tennis players' contribution is worth more than that of doctors), but yes, the market is amoral, and based on the laws of supply and demand - so inevitably the minuscule numbers of top sports stars will earn astronomical amounts in this system.

One could argue that the free market is inherently moral.

If 2020 is cancelled, Fed's slam record is completely meaningless.

As far as Djoker goes, he got his pet slam before the plug was pulled. He did fairly well in all of this.

It really depends, if Nole reaches 20 then for sure most people will say tie goes to Djokovic. But if he stalls at 18 or even 19 I think history will judge him as the runner up definitively.

He is certainly a threat a Wimbledon. Close to reaching the 2018 final which he would have won and semi again last year only losing to the Wimbledon GOAT.

Djokovic will be fine. There’s no one around to stop him hoovering up more slams whenever the tour does resume, except Nadal at the French.

Those two will probably be duking it out when they’re 40 and we’re all still waiting for the next next next next gen to finally break through. “The gap is narrowing. This year is gonna be different!”

This year already is different, though; entirely out of the ordinary even & without precedent.

If both 2020 and 2011 are affected, then Fed's records don't have much meaning, even if they stand!
Great to know. So if "Fed's records don't have much meaning," let's make sure no Novak or Nadal fan bothers chasing after those records. Also remember that Novak's 17 slams and Rafa's 19 slams also won't have much meaning. Truly novel concept, perhaps individual to you. To reduce the greatest tennis career that any man has ever had to having "no meaning" is a crass reflection of you, not Federer or tennis.

Because they know that 150k is more than 50k. Average salaries of respective professions.
What people don't address is the fact that many doctors and surgeons make a heck of a lot more money than 80% of tennis players. People are only looking at the very top talents in the sport instead of the whole tour where most players can barely afford to travel.
Doctors make in the range of 150K to 400k depending on experience. Surgeons make over 500K to close to a million.

Djoker also loses his opportunity this year to add 3 more Slams and tie the record while he was red hot in form and confidence. So he lost more than everyone else outside of Nadal.

Well yeah, but not because of the next gen breaking through. In the small amount of tennis we got to see, they even regressed. Djokovic and Nadal combined to win the ATP Cup, the Australian, and the two 500s they played. And I guarantee you Nadal and Djokovic are going to be training harder in this time off than guys like Tsitsipas or Zverev. They’ll probably be even further away when the tour finally restarts.

If fellow ATG was able to almost win a slam at age 38 (but 40-15) Nole and Rafa will be fine for the next 5 years.
Don't know. Nadal took extensive time off throughout his career to deal with all sorts of injuries. And Djokovic has had problems with his wrist, shoulder and elbow. That stuff doesn't just go away with age. It gets worse as the body ages and deteriorates over the grind of the tour. Neither of them will be competing for Slams once Medvedev, Thiem, Zverev and Tsitspas reach their peak potential in the next 2 years.

No I don’t look at Instagram. But I was more thinking down the line when things start settling down and tournaments seem likely to resume. They’ll be the first ones back on the court and they’ll train harder than any of the next gen (except maybe Thiem, but he’s not even next gen).

Not every body ages the same. Some athletes can go hard at a high level at an older age while others wear out physically at a younger age. Safin, Nalbandian, Murray, Davydenko, Del Potro, etc have/had broken down from accumulated injuries. And Djokovic has already had all sorts of physical issues where he even had to pull out of a Slam. Nadal, same thing who's pulled out of multiple Slams due to injuries. They'll be one of the very very lucky few if they can continue winning into their late 30s.

You assume a lot. Nadal and Djokovic are isolated in their houses just like the rest of us. Djokovic actually said based on reports that he hopes the entire 2020 season is cancelled. Nadal and Federer are playing it by ear. I don't know anything about who will train the hardest but everything will reset once the tour resumes. And it's going to be a challenge for everyone to get back into the grind. Nobody knows when the tour will resume. It might be as late as 2021 as the Slams are being held in the most affected countries where the virus has gone out of control.

If everything resets, then I think we can assume Nadal and Djokovic will go back to being two of the hardest-working players on tour, like they’ve always been. And I assume that’ll give them a leg up on getting back to form quickly. I could be wrong. Maybe they really will be too old. But I’ve seen no evidence to indicate that’ll be the case. They’ve only gotten better and better at managing their bodies as they’ve gotten older.

Edit: But mostly I’m just being a negative Nancy. At the end of 2019, I really thought things would be different. Medvedev had that great run of form. Zverev seemed to be getting back, taking out all of the big 3 in successive WTFs. Thiem and Tsitsipas both had great fall seasons. I was excited for what was to come. And then Nadal and Djokovic started the season even more dominant than they’ve been in years. It’s just boring and disheartening.

Yes because of an elbow problem. And he quit midway in his 4th round match against Wawrinka in last year's US Open because of shoulder problem. He reportedly had considered pulling out of US Open 2019 but played it anyway. So there is evidence in front of you that Djokovic is getting more injured into his 30s. Everyone starts to break down which is why they are trying to be more cautious with their schedules so that they can prolong their bodies.

It's interesting to think about who this hurts the most.

One could argue that this really hurts Federer's chances of catching up to Rafa more than anything.

He's doing perfectly fine, already winning 9 slams at an age other players were considered grandpas...

They both also don't have the physical ability to play endless tournaments as they used to. In 2013, a 26 year old Nadal was able to play 8-9 tournaments over 3-4 months without a problem. Now if he plays even 2 tournaments back to back, he starts to physically struggle. Let's see what happens..

Sports have evolved and tennis players are stronger and better conditioned. They take their physios and trainers with them everywhere and do weight lifting and watch their diets carefully.

So tell me again why Djokovic should be stopped by injuries
