The only way to turn media for Novak is Novak turns against his own country Serbia, gone rogue of Serbia, make himself a freedom fighter or something. if he does this, the media would go crazy about him. it's exactly the same thing happened to Chinese player Li Na, had Li Na not been critical of China, she would have never gotten media's love as she did. Tennis is not only tennis, it's politic.

1) 4 or 5 years ago was the summer of migrants pouring into Europe from Mideast and NAfrica. In one press conference, Djokovic came out and said those refugees should be able to find a home in Europe. That attitude was very unpopular then, and is now, especially in the Balkans.
2) Before 2018 World Cup final between France and Croatia, Djokovic came out and said he support Croatia, partly because he's friends with many of their stars. He visited their training camp before WC, and had his picture taken with the team captain Modric and Rakitic. A prominent politician (mayor of Belgrade, I think) came out and said only crazy Serbians could root for Croatia.
3) His decision to take on Goran, a Croatian, as assistant coach was also very unpopular with a large segment of Serbians.

Truth is, Fedal is so popular that other players struggle with the popularity. Let's face it, we have a limited amount of people on this planet and those Fedal fans aren't turning to Djokovic fans any time soon or ever. So other players will have to deal with it for now but in the near future, it's more than likely that there will be a player(s) who will be more popular than Federer when he's well forgotten. It happens to everyone. And out of sight, out of mind and there will be a whole host of new fans/generations who wouldn't care for the past as much.

We have 6 billion people on earth. Not everyone of Federer and Nadal's fan was previously a tennis fan or following the sport before .
They captured the imagination of folks in ways that only a Borg/Agassi did to some effect previously.
In fact Fed entered at a time what was really a dark period of tennis with not much tennis following and no steady domination at the top.

The delusion that Novak lacks fans relative to Fedal due to racism against Serbia is ridiculous to say the least.

1) He joined the party late after the Fedal rivalry was already full swing. He became a third wheel spoiler in this sense.
2) Novak was a sore loser and bit of a bigshot when he first broke out circa 2011. He also had attitude problems prior to this (constant match retirements for example). He has turned this around tremendously and has become a great ambassador for the sport, but first impressions mean a lot to people, especially those who are already deeply entrenched in the fandom of another player.

A couple of decades later we find Federer and Nadal more popular than Borg/Agassi and there will be players in the future who will surpass previous players' popularity. It's bound to happen. It’s nothing to do with being Eastern European. Ivanisevic and Safin are 2 of the most popular players ever.
My honest opinion is that the fanbase had split down the middle between Fedal, who have the most dedicated fans, so, whilst Djokovic is right up there with them on achievements, he hasn’t been able to bring in his own fans because his game, though efficient, is not electrifying.
Commentators go into overdrive about Djoker being the best in everything under the sun when he is playing but fans don’t see or feel it because his style is not captivating.

I’d say just as racists etc. have their prejudices, most of those with an offensive "anti-racist" or "anti-discriminatory" agenda have their own prejudices, namely that a big majority will choose their favourites according to such stereotypes. And on the other hand when anyone from a (really or allegedly) discriminated group is disliked, then exactly being part of that group has to be the REASON for it.
But in the end Djokovic could be a Western European or American handsome and stylish guy, and still Federer’s gamestyle will prevail when it comes to fans and public sympathies. It's still sport, so people (mainly) watch it because of the sport.
