How many points (0 to 10) would a player get for each shot?

I'll start with Fed.

1st serve - 9
2nd serve - 8
forehand - 10
backhand - 7
backhand slice - 10
forehand volley - 7
backhand volley - 8
drive volley - 10 (I've never seen him miss once)
forehand smash - 9
backhand smash - 10
drop shots - 8 (some of you might think he gets a 10/10 but seriously with a forehand like his tons of players stand 10 feet behind the baseline when Fed gets an easier shot to his forehand thus allowing him to do what he pleases)
special (shots you don't see in every match) - 10
mental toughness - 9 (vastly underrated because of Nadal)
stamina - 8
footwork - 10
speed - 9

I find it disturbing that on Virtua Tennis Federer and Nadal are so weak. It is almost like it is easier to win a match playing with Ferrero. It is ridiculous.

Is there a game in which you can play with players from different years against each other?

For example Federer 2005 against Laver 1969
or Nadal 2010 vs Borg 1978

Djokovic has got 10's all the way around except maybe in the volleys, mental toughness, and backhand smash he might get 9's.

Ferrero has ample power, but he's lacking in speed. Nadal and Hewitt are so good to the extent that people wanted him to be banned, at least in the VT3 arcade version. I love using Ferrero, but power alone gets you nowhere against higher level opponents.

At the highest level in VT3, speed is more important than raw power as it gives you more time to get into place set up for the next shot. Therefore guys like Nadal, Hewitt and Grosjean are good to use. However, the players have good diversity in general I feel. Federer's backhand is too weak it's funny, but a good player can compensate for that by mixing it up with slices and getting into a good position for striking every time.

I think the ability to defend is something vid games overlook and often does not show up on the stats, but if we were to, say, give players seperate stats on "offensive (prepared) forehand" and "defensive (running) forehand", it would more accurately reflect a player's abilities.

Prime Fed would look something like this:

Serve: 9
OFore: 10
Dfore: 8
Oback: 8
Dback: 7
Slice: 10
Volley: 8
Speed: 9

Prime Nadal would be like:
Serve: 6
OFore: 8
DFore: 10
OBack: 7
Dback: 10
Slice: 6
Volley: 6
Speed: 10

Prime Djokovic:
Serve: 8
OFore: 8
DFore: 9
OBack: 9
DBack: 9
Slice: 7
Volley: 6
Speed: 9

Prime Murray (he has a prime?)
Serve: 8
OFore: 7
DFore: 9
OBack: 8
DBack: 9
Slice: 9
Volley: 7
Speed: 9

Damn Prime Djokovic is good..

Top Spin 3 and 4 allows you to play with past players against modern competition. Players like Borg, Lendl, Becker, Agassi and Sampras (I guess we can include them in this group now).

Top Spin 3 is a great game with accurate physics and players' styles. I'm not a fan of Top Spin 4. I haven't tried the new Virtua Tennis yet...

I don't know why you're getting all defensive, Nadal is brilliant in 3 of the most important stats: running forehand/backhand and speed. If you ever played tennis video games you'd know one player hardly ever stays still unless you're playing some **** easy pc opponent.

You obviously don't play much tennis vid games.

Top Spin 4 is the best tennis game I've seen so far. Some claim that Top Spin 3 was more realistic, but the controls were just way, way too tough.

One problem with TS4 is that when you play against a computer and you are at the net, you have to cover CC, not DTL. For some weird reason (a bug, maybe) the AI still thinks CC is still the high percentage option and almost always goes for CC.

Yeah, but not up to the point where you hit a DTL first volley and instead of continuing to cover the line (as in real tennis) you immediately run sideways to cover CC (because that's where AI will most definitely go).

You have underrated all these things ^^

I see what you mean, but then again, if we isolate those those strokes/aspects and compare them to 10/10's, it seems quite reasonable.

eg) Karlovic first serve, Isner second serve, Rafter backhand smash, McEnroe/Edberg volleys, Nadal/Connors mental toughness, etc.

Now that I think about it, I do think I underrated Nadal's serve.

If real-life tennis would be like Virtua Tennis players would dive after the ball for no reason even if they could reach it with a regular shot.
If real-life tennis would be like Top Spin the character animations would be all wrong.
If real-life tennis would be like Mario Tennis they would all have funny grunts and transforming racquets.
If real-life tennis would be like the FIFA games the match would be played on a large grass pitch, the Spaniards would always dive, the Swiss would be irrelevant, the Swedes would be really good for one year and then not do anything of interest, the Dutch would kick people in the chest for no reason and the Americans would just stand there, not knowing what's going on.

I think that the Top spin games failed to account for certain things likes mentality or defensive-offensive shots in the past. For instance, in the past if you were forced onto the defense, you would always return the shot with less on it than an offensive shot, compared to say some of the ridiculous shots that guys like sampras and nadal have pulled off in the past.

Likewise, mental strength was previously ignored, but in topspin 4, many of these things have been addressed. for instance, Nadal has a shot counter perk, which if used correctly, can produce some ridiculous passing shots on the run (I oughta know, my favorite player to use in 'player match' is a Edberg-based S&V, and Nadal is the most difficult to deal with while at net, even if on the full run)

Likewise, perks like "Smell of Blood" and "Monster Defense" Help with representing mental edge, as both increase the effiency of all shots when in pressure situations (such as having a game point with smell of blood, or being behind in a game with monster defense)

However, the equipment selection for the game is lacking compared to topspin 3, and unlike topspin 3, the developers put decidely less effort into proper animations, and you have less choices to work with in the character creation.. which are the two main beefs I have with the game

Also, I'd like to see the game's pace actually equal the real game.. topspin sesms really slow at times.

perhaps they'd see this and include additional clothes, frames, and maybe animations as DLC? God willing.
