Maybe this is as fit as he can be. Ppl have different bodytypes (some are naturally prone to being more muscular/fat, others are naturally prone to skinniness) Djokovic is one body type, Wawrinka is another.
So he couldn't get any faster either?

I don't think Stan's issues are fitness related. He is either on fire or he isn't. His career lasted long enough that for almost 8 weeks he has put up the goods and reached 4 major finals and won three of them. Yes he has had other decent runs at several majors but week in week out he is not a contender. He wins a lot of sets but far too often he does not close the deal and win the match. I don't recall that fitness was an issue but misfiring the groundstrokes.

why is he missing so many groundstrokes then?

If he was leaner he would lose his power, but he would start jumping on his serve. I say he would become Gasquet, which means worse.

He was at his fittest in his slam winning years.

His issue is his wildly fluctuating levels and his footspeed; fitness won't fix that.

Pre surgery Stan was one of the fittest players on tour? It’s literally one of his strengths. It seems only out of shape recreational players don’t recognize this. Tremendous irony.

I don't think that "fitness" is/was Stan's main problem lately. He's fit most of the time, unless anyone thinks this isn't enough for a tennis player:
However, his body crumbled down after that double career-ending match against Murray in Roland Garros. Both men gave it all that day, I will never get tired of repeating this. After that he had a knee surgery, and as fit as you can be, it's really hard to regain the physical confidence after a knee surgery. I'm an amateur crappy player and I 'doubt' a lot when sprinting in tennis matches, imagine if my body was my living like Stan. In recent years, I can only remember of 0lderer getting a knee surgery and getting back, but even that took him almost a whole season out.

Not almost a whole season. Fed's last match in 2016 was at Wimbledon and he returned 5 months later to win the AO. So let's say half a season. :)

The photo of him shirtless was taken in June, 2019, long past the last time he won a slam.

Hit the nail on the head. Wawrinka's issue, similar to Safin, Tsonga, Nalbandian, and plenty of other talented players, was consistency. Slam-winner Wawrinka and regular Wawrinka are two different players, leagues apart.
