If you could attend any tennis match in history:

Which one would you send yourself back to via a time machine? And let's say that your memory of that particular match will be wiped clean before you begin watching it. You would sit anywhere you want.

I'd probably choose the Federer Nadal 2008 Wimbledon Final. Even as a RF fan, it would be tough to see him lose after nearly coming back to win it, but long-term I would always relish seeing one of the most memorable matches in history.

Sampras Agassi 2001 us open quarter final or Wimbledon final 1999. Best I've been to live is federer Nadal wimbledon final 2007 and Sampras federer at msg 2011.

it has to be one where Federer wins. Wimbledon 2009 I remember watching on the TV and it felt like heart attack after heart attack (especially after 2008). The final outcome...Jubilation. Man that was awesome.

It HAS to be close up.

Easy: 2009 Australian Open Final. Best hard court baseline tennis ever played--at least for 4 sets.

Then 1980 Wimbledon Final

Then some WTC classic between Laver and Rosewall.

Or, 2004 US Open Final (the 0-6-0) beatdown of Hewitt. It would be great to witness the beginning of Federer, the genius.

Easy as pie. If I had only one shot, I'd relive Connors-Krickstein 1991 fourth-round US Open, court-side. Even though I was in attendance in the stadium, I would give anything to relive that match. One of the greatest moments in sports ever, ever, ever!

Best quality match: Wimbledon 2009

2009 Wimbledon or 03 Davis Cup Hewitt vs Federer

Other might be Hewitt Sampras at the USO, watching him win his first slam.

Wimbledon 2009.

Federer walked on to Centre Court a Tier 1 legend, and walked off the GOAT.

At RG 2009, Fed equaled the score with Sampras, and then, at the very next opportunity, he seized it all.

The title of the greatest tennis player to have ever lived was on the line in this match, and he did it.

5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14.

This, I think, was perhaps Federer's greatest victory.

Off the top of my head:

1. 1980 Wimbledon final between Borg and McEnroe.

2. 2008 Wimbledon final between Nadal and Federer.

3. 2013 Wimbledon final between Murray and Djokovic.

I'm sure there are more but these are the ones that immediately came to mind! :)

I'd like to go back to matches before TV, something with Laver and Panch Gonzales. I'd love to see Pancho play at his peak.

Or see Kramer and Gonzales. I'd want to see how they played back then.

All the matches everyone talked about here would be great to revisit, live.

The first one. That smug satisfaction of knowing I'd be the best player in the world at the time would be priceless.

Actual answer, maybe Wimby 1980.

There is some film archive around from the early days - interesting stuff.

The first French Open final ever, in 1891. In fact it was the "Championnat de France" H. Briggs beats P. Baigneres 6–3, 6–2. The draw was of 5 players. The motivation to participate in the tournament was a gamble. I read the amount of money wagered, I think it was not much.

"The inaugural French Open winner caused something of a stir as he was in fact an Englishman living in Paris, who entered the competition in 1891 as a wager and defeated France’s P Baigneres in front of a handful of spectators."

I would love to be there, observe the stadium, the match, talk with the spectators, know the first name of both players, etc. Also take some photos, come back and post it here!

Wimbledon '09 final. The match between my two favourite players back then and the match I was most emotionally invested in, probably ever. I would scream to Andy that he already is a Wimbledon champion in our hearts after that loss.

I'd want to watch Rod Laver or Pancho Gonzalea play at their peaks. From the little I've seen of Laver in video clips, he seems to have been absolutely brilliant. I can probably watch recent matches anyhow, whereas those players can only be watched live, due to the lack of footage.
If it were a recent match I'd watch the USO 2004 final.
Fanboy that I am, I wouldn't want to watch the W 2008 final live. I've had more than enough of that, thank you very much. I know the match was great and I'm salty as hell but no result has hurt me quite as much as that one.

Australian Open 2012 final.
French Open 2013 semifinal.

The one year since 2011 that I haven't been to the AO.
I was annoyed once I realised what a good tournament it ended up being.
So I resolved not to miss another.

Do I only get to watch, or do I get to do something?

If I can do something, I am making history.

I will attend the 1993 Hamburg women's QF and prevent Monica Seles from getting stabbed.

Should she get stabbed in the next match or another tournament, I expect some other TT members to use their once-in-a-lifetime time machine privilege and save her.

I can't share that info on the World Wide Web.

Look, if Seles escapes the stabbing incident, she might end up with more slams than Graf.

Then some crazy Graf fan from this thread might also travel back in time and try to undo my work. :)

Someone needs to make a movie about this.

D'oh! I didn't read the fine print in the OP.

It says my memory of the match will be wiped clean first.

Hmm, perhaps I can write a note-to-self before I enter the time machine.

Easy. Some random match where Rafa's father went then follow him and prevent him from meeting Rafa's mother. Then Rafa wouldn't be born and my precious Feddy would have 20+ slams.
