1988 US Open Women's Singles Final
I was there because I knew it could be history.
There are several matches I would possible pick.
1. 1927 Wimbledon semi of Bill Tilden versus Henri Cochet. Tilden crushed Cochet in the first two sets 6-2 6-4 and led 5-1 in the third set. Cochet won 17 consecutive points on his way to winning the set 7-5. Cochet won the match. He went on to win Wimbledon in the final against Borotra after again losing the first two sets. Cochet was also down 5-3 in the fifth set before rallying to win the set, match and tournament 7-5. I believe he also had to face several match points in that match also.
2. 1964 Wembley Pro final between Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall. Some consider this the finest match of the over 130 matches they played. It was perhaps the passing of the torch from Rosewall to Laver as the best player in the world. The match went five sets, Laver was down 5-3 in the fifth and won the match 8-6.
3. 1932 Wimbledon final-The final was a slaughter but people have talked about the pure power of Vines' tennis during that match. The final serve was supposed to be so fast that some couldn't see it. I would love to see that serve and video it to see if that was true which I frankly doubt.
4. 1977 Wimbledon semi of Borg versus Gerulaitis.
5. 1926 match between Lenglen and Wills.
6. 2008 Wimbledon final-Nadal versus Federer
7. 1956 Wembley Pro-Pancho Gonzalez versus Frank Sedgman. Many who observed this match have said they have never seen tennis to equal it.
8. 1937 Davis Cup-Don Budge versus Gottfried von Cramm-For many years this is the match many pointed to as the greatest of all time. Budge trailed two sets to none and 4-1 in the fifth before winning the match 8-6. Cramm told Budge that he (von Cramm) had never played better.
9. Any of the great Gonzalez versus Hoad matches, perhaps the one in Kooyong won by Hoad 4-6 9-7 11-9 18-16.
