If you had the power to, who would you pick as the player to retire your favorites in their match?

I had a little time today to look at Agassi's final USO run in 2006, and those that remember, Agassi had announced in 2006 at Wimbledon that he was going to retire at the USO that very same year. When the draw came out, my eyes immediately went to Agassi - Roddick 4th round showdown.

I thought, what could be a better way for Agassi to retire, than on Ashe playing Roddick, who was the guy carrying the torch for American tennis after the Sampras/Agassi era. I felt it would be the perfect send off. I remember cheering like crazy in that classic fight against Baggy in the 2nd round, and then thinking he should get past Ben Becker in the third round now that he has the momentum to make the date with Roddick.

Unfortunately it didn't happen, and it was kind of ironic, that Boris Becker being his mortal enemy during his playing days, he ended up losing to a B Becker in his last match. I felt we kind of lost out on a special moment, but that is sport, doesn't always go the way you want it. If I could change who Agassi would be retired by, then Roddick would be the perfect choice, and we were one match away from it.

Another was Santaro, I agreed with him when he said he wanted his last match to be with Federer. He said that Federer was the only guy who did what he did, but did it better, and he would have liked nothing better than to be sent into retirement than by him.

Do you have any that you wished could have happened?

Easy, Nadal at Olympics. He actually dashed his teams hopes to compete at davis cup with all retirement hoopla later in the year.

My favorite is Federer. I am actually really happy with the way it ended for him. The only better ending I can think of would be a loss against Warwinka

The match between Federer and Sampras would’ve been a legendary ending to Pete’s career. He never did much after that. Endless respect for pete

Djokovic should have retired after the Olympic gold, no event in the history of tennis could have ever equaled that conclusion, not even Sampras at the 2002 US Open.
But he decided to continue ruining the happy ending, just like Jordan when he decided to return with the Washington Wizards ruined the perfect ending with game 6 in Salt Lake City of the 1998 Finals.

I would like Fognini to play the last match of his career with Monfils, or for Monfils to play it with Fognini.
In short, two crazy people who would be very capable of making that conclusion epic.

I would have liked to see Edberg beating Becker one last time in a final and then call it quits. But I guess it was ok that Edberg lost agains a young Swede, Niclas Kulti, at the Stockholm Open. Kulti just never really became a top tier guy.

No chance that 2019 Nadal could've beaten 2019 Djokovic at Wimbledon.

Rafa has never taken three sets off Novak on grass.
I disagree. The way Djoker played in the final (taking walkabouts in multiple sets), he could have lost to Rafa, who did win 30 games at WC vs Djoker just a year before. Rafa also easily could have won that one if it did not go indoors.

I take Rafa in 5 in the final.

Something never happening does not mean it cant happen.

OK, we can agree to disagree. But how Djokovic plays against Federer is not how he plays against Nadal. Federer is a much more trickier match up for him overall. And considering again that Nadal has never taken three sets off of him, Nadal winning is a long bet.

Oh, it definitely is unlikely. I was just saying he does have a chance. It could also be a really cool match after the 2018 match.

If it was upto me, I'd have picked Alcaraz to retire Rafa on court Pista Rafa Nadal at Barcelona open or on court Phillipe Chatrier at RG.
But ofcourse, it had to be Dutch qualifier Botic Van De Zandsculp.
