I'm changing my old Flexpoint Radical Tour! Need your inputs....

Hi!

I would appreciate hearing your opinions on this.

I have been using my old Flexpoint Radical Tour 100sq (2005 I guess) for several years now.....

THE SPECS
  • 100 sq
  • 325g (unstrung) 347g (strung)
  • Balance point 315mm (unstrung)/ 8 pts HL
  • 16x19
  • 21mm beam
  • 57 lbs

I can say that I still like it...but I think I've really learned how to play with it during all these years. I want to upgrade for something more recent!

I tried my friend's racket, a Head Speed Graphene 360+ MP, very different feeling from mine! I found it "OK" but I found it less stable and too light compared to mine...I know that mine is still very heavy when I look at the specs of my current racquets!

ABOUT ME
40 years old and level around 5.0 and I have been playing since I was 12, but now I'm now mainly play with players below my own level, so I am not necessarily looking for the most power possible. I am more looking to exchange than to hit winning shots down the line. I have a 2-handed backand.

WHAT I WANT
Versatile
Good control
Access to spin - but not a speed machine

WHAT'S NOT IMPORTANT
Power
Big Serve

I don't have a place near me where I can demo rackets...because I know that would be the right thing to do :(

I've been reading and watching videos for a while now...and there some options so far that I think might be good....but I'm here to open my mind a bit.
  • Yonex Ezone 98
  • Wilson Blade 98 v9
  • Head Gravity Pro
  • Head Speed Pro
  • Anything else ?!

I also hesitate between 98 and 100sq

I'd like to have your opinions on my case!
Thanks,

OP it seems like what you want you already have in your current frame? I would demo some frames taking into account flex and head size. Then target frames with those specs. You listed frames 60-65ra. You won't necessarily get more of what you want with those frames listed unless maybe you go down to a 98, but really it is splitting hairs. Define "versatile." Typically, power and spin are mutually exclusive ceteris paribus. Control is something subjective and highly variable and dependent on strings and tension.

I used to play with the Flexpoint Radical Tour. You won't find much similar to rackets of old...

I currently play with the Blade v7 (18x20), I like the Speed MP 24, the Prestige Tour is also good.

The balance and such might not be the same but a little weight in the handle can have these feeling right.

Versatile meaning all-court playing... able to rally from the backline and and maneuverable at the net.

I don't want to find the same racket...I know that everything has changed :) That's also the goal to explore a little bit....

But at the same time I also want to be careful not to end up with a Babolat Pure Drive, very stiff, if we know that I currently had a 58 RA

Ezone 98 is a good starting point. The people I know who use this stick (including myself) would be aging 4.0ish players who need a slightly more user friendly frame than back in the day, has decent flex and good power. The only con on Yonex is their stupid mini buttcap...but easily solved with a Tourna Power cap. Try that, report back and people can give recommendations from there.

I guess the old Radical Tour ended up evolving into the Gravity - so probably the Gravity Pro or Tour if you want something similar but more modern

I feel the same when anyone asks me about frames comparable to the 6.1 95 nCode or kfactor iterations, just some special sauce going on there. Specially with the flexpoint radical, the way the upper hoop feels is unlike any of the other 10+ iterations of the radical I’ve tried (including all 95”)

have you tried drilling two holes in them?

The 2024 Speed MP has a higher swing weight than the last last few generations so that's a better frame to try but I think the Gravity Pro will be closer to what you are looking for as it's beefier, 20 mm beam, and has more plow and has a more classic feel compared to most modern frames.

Also consider that it really isnt a 100 frame its more like a 98, before 2013 or so head used to measure head size including the frame width unlike others brands, now they measure normally like other brands (excluding frame width). Having said that some 100 current frames are great :). Gravitys I think are a good start, specially the new gravity 98 coming out seems nice.

Believe that was only the case with the old molds, the Radical Tour was a 100 made for Ferrero coming from the Prince 100

Interesting! I didn't know that.

Prince seems less popular than before....is it just a marketing problem?
yes imo.
i like the 100 sq in 18x20 frames from prince in general.
the phantom 100x 18x20 is also a great frame, comfortable, fair power, big sweet spot, and a good control spin ratio which works with a lot of different string setups. its 320 g unstrung, but others have reported that the base grip is very heavy and with a different basegrip it gets in the 310 g range.
the same is true for the prince ats 100p but its a little more powerful, but also a very good combination of comfort, control, power and spin.

Thanks,
Did that "Flexpoint" technology work at all - the drilled hole on either side which supposedly caused flexing in a unique way?

There is a great modern equivalent, the Prince Synergy 98. Has a more modern lightweight static weight of 305g but more head weight but still nice to swing and play. Swingweight a little lower than yours but not a drastic fall off like the ezone 98 would be. The racket hits like a truck too, it is a fantastic frame that i am sure you can handle having used Head tour which was a pro level frame really from the old Radical series.

Flexpoints still had that measurements but if it was specific replicated mold than probably it is 100. In any case I would still try the Gravitys seem the few oldschool 100 inch racquets or the Prince ones.

I can say that my drame feel very smooth...i think the RA ratings is like 58? Maybe it come from this drilled Hole at 3 and 9. The ball Pocketing its vert good but sometimes it feel too flexy

Yes, the FP Radical Tour was made to bring Ferrero to Head. Ferrero was using the POG 100, so the FP Radical Tour is a real 100sqin racquet.
As far as to what current racquet the OP should "upgrade", this is hilarious, because most current racquets are hollow, fluttery, vibrating trash, so there is no upgrade. Maybe the Gravity MP is worth a try. Best bet would be to get the POG 100, but it's only available in Europe.

Blade pro 18m is pretty close to the old school radicals from what I heard. They are a bit bigger and thicker, but they are the closest thing to the old radicals currently on the market imo. The feel is also super nice unlike a lot of modern rackets due to the lack of tech in it.

Thanks,
Also give the Prestige MP-L a try.

I also played with Head Fxp Radical Tour in the past.
Funny thing is that I recently purchased an Angell TC99 with very similar specs.
The Angell React MP and MP Pro are also great alternatives to the FXP Radical Tour (if you prefer a lower swing weight than the TC99 that is foam filled).
You can build all these Angell frames to your desired specs from his website as well.

I also would consider the Pro Kennex Q+Tour Pro 325.

You are in luck, because almost anything is better than those Flexpoinrs.
Kidding aside, there are some nice, soft, Head and Prince frames of similar specs.
