I'm still in a state of shock

Idk how Federer blew that second set up 4-1 at one point. His serve was pathetic. It’s usually money. He knew the importance of that set yet blew it. All he had to do is hold serve twice at 4-2.

By the way, I never make predictions. I only analyze what has already happened. 50% of points does not say a man can't win big, only that it is far less likely. This is a huge lesson I learned from Wawrinka. At his best he won around 52% of points. That to me does not point to several slams, so we have to be careful.
On a good day he would play like he could win 60%

It is shocking, because he lost only one set in three previous rounds of Wimbledon.
I think the issue is that probably his level was kind of a mirage?
I mean he didn`t play badly however none of them are players to test him.
QF is generally the first match in a slam where you play quality dudes I think.
However I do think he still has the chance to get to a major final at least, we need to wait one year to see if he does it in the next wimbly IMO

Are these people from 2019 or 2021?

Whether you like it or not the OSG is seen by most top players as another prestigious tennis title to add to their CVs which is why they play it if they can. Federer was playing the Olympics long before Uniqlo came on the scene.

Most players who skip it, like Thiem, do so because they have no confidence they can win it.
There is also the unique once in a lifetime feeling of carrying the flag for your country and if you get into medals match, even non tennis fans from your country are pulling for you to win it

Agree. The match that gave me a lot of false hope was the absolute dismantling of Richard Gasquet. I was conveniently forgetting that this wasn't the Richard G of 2007 or 2015.

It was Norrie for me. Blowing a 2-0 set lead to find himself in a 4th set battle had all the makings of a Federer meltdown. Breaking at 4-4 and then serving out the match gave me false hope in his mentality.

This is probably the biggest shock for me. Before the match I thought a big issue for Hurk would be that he wouldn't be able to get his teeth into Fed's service games. So much for that.

I don't believe it. This can't be it, he will take it one step at a time from now on still on his road to recovery.

I mean, there's no way he thought he was winning Wimbledon this year before the tournament started. He wanted to see how far he could go and for it to set the tone for the rest of his comeback.

Remember he said his "season starts at Wimbledon". Ok, he's off to a mediocre start. Will get better. I like the Hyeong Chung AO18 comparison match.

All due respect. Fed is mentally fried. At this level, that is all that matters. I don't think his body language or tone suggests he is enjoying his comeback. I expect a retirement announcement coming.

Agreed. I think it's time to face reality - a QF actually surpassed my expectation for him (he was very lucky to get past the 1st round). This is maybe his ceiling now, as he's chosen to keep playing.

I still think he deserves more time. We have to remember that he is still adjusting to the bubble protocols that everyone has had 12 months to adjust to.

Federer was always so good at Juggling the constant travel and ambassadorial duties of the pro game pre-cove. It would have become second nature and very ingrained in him after 20 + years on tour. But at the moment he is trying to return from injury and all the normal off court routine that he is used to doing has been pulled out from under him.

He also can't have the big full team that he normally has or his family. Bubble life would be a horrible adjustment when you are already returning from injury and a month from your 40th birthday.

And yes, everyone is going through the same thing, but Federer was out when everyone else got a head start with those 12 months getting used to the new normal.

He’s had 1.5 years away from the game and was never mentally fried the previous 20 years.

It’s much, much more likely that he isn’t enjoying himself because he’s losing to guys he would have crushed even in 2019. This is a player accustomed to cruising through matches in an hour and hitting winners at will. He’s not enjoying his comeback because he’s not winning.

I finally watched the match last night and i don't understand all the praise for Hurkacz ! Yes he played a good match, but still nothing spectacular in my opinion.
He did not win the match, Federer lost it with countless mistakes due to who knows exactly why. We could be here speculating on Federer ugly performance forever but i can only say that was not the usual Federer at all and i really hope Federer can recover mentally from this!

Exactly. You could not have read my mind better. Confidence comes from winning and Rog is in unfamiliar territory. The nearest parallel I can see is in 2013 when he was losing to players like Brands due to his back issue. This time, things are much more complicated and my gut instinct is he will say Bye Bye soon.

It’s kind of expected when you saw how Fed was struggling against WTA players up until that point

Still at least he saved himself from 3 breadsticks at the hand of Nole
