Imagine there is no GOAT

There has never been a GOAT. Even when Sampras got his 14, Laver and even Borg had a case. For there to be a GOAT this player would have to be so far above other players in terms of achievements, H2H, and influence in the game that it would be unquestionable, and therefore there would be no debate. Furthermore, this would be translatable across eras, which in itself is problematic enough.

Let's all stop this waste of everybody's time already. The chase for the slam record is a worthy enterprise and should be entertaining enough, but that doesn't translate into "GOAThood"

There isn't really one yet but it makes for a good discussion among tennis fans and the sport gains from it. Federer, Nadal and Djokovic playing in the same era have made the sport richer.
No, it makes for awful discussion and a gigantic waste of man hours. Speculative ranting based on opinions about why your favorite is the best achieves nothing.

I have always liked Nadal and Federer (and others like Wawrinka too) but Nadal was my favorite, but seeing the tide turn makes me appreciate Fed even more. Even if Nadal had more slams than Fed I wouldn't consider him GOAT now. You could always make a case for Fed, even Djokovic (and I find Djokovic unbearably boring, but you need to take your preferences out of the equation to be able to appreciate things better.)

You make an exquisitely cogent argument for its elimination.

But consider this: We're all in it to win it.

Without the ability to make firm, superlative declarations of primacy... we're left to formulate wholly original thoughts.

Try to imagine the challenge this presents for some folk. No one wants that kind of difficulty.

GOAThood, I'm afraid, is a must. They have little else with which to work.

Borg. Most potent numbers in the two most important categories: majors and ladies. The first category became a victim of the second. An actual bull, as opposed to the rusty peak injured golden Mallorcan tribute band, Borg became too big for the game and transcended it.
