improving your weakness?

I was playing a match yesterday and I use a 1hbh and usually stand 1-3 feet before the baseline when I get into a rally, but what I notice was when my opponent gave me a "short backhand" like around the service line, all I could do is run up and slice it back because I didn't have enough time to prep for a good passing shot (he came to the net after feeding me a short 1hbh). He had footwork and overhead (lobs were no good).

So is it just my footwork thats lacking? Or anticipation? How should I improve this shot?

When a player approaches you with a short, low approach to your backhand, you need first... low slice into his body, dropping to his shins...second, deep CC lob, 3rd, DTL low approach (but that's susceptible to his lobvolleying your approach), 4th, low CC slice, 5th, short angle to his clumsier side, sometimes forehand side to guys with western forehands or backhand side to groundstrokers with 2hbhs's.
You need all these replies to call yourself a 4.0 player.

Thanks alot I doubt many 4.5 will get a good shot off a deep CC lob, ill probaly a winner volley or a easy overhead?

Aside from the normal slice shot.
You can still hit a nasty 1hbh topspin approach shot. Try practicing the carioca step (aka grapevine step). It's a great footwork to use when you are moving into the serve line. Same foot work to use when you are chipping and slicing the ball.
The carioca step allows to natural turn sideways while giving you a good base and balance as you turn and bend the knees to hit a 1hbh. It does require alot of practice and focus.

Call it what you want, it's just a topspin backhand hit inside out.
Just get shoulders fully sideways to the ball early, and the topspin goes CC sharp enough to avoid the poaching netman. Aim wide of the longest court.
