I know this forum is heavily skewed towards men's tennis but Raducanu (& Leylah to an extent) really took the internet by storm over the last 2 weeks......even in US, Women's final between 2 teenagers (who are not even from US and were not even in top50) had better ratings than Men's final where one of the top2 greatest players of all time was going for his calendar slam & all time GS record against No2 ranked player in the world.

I would think that’s because the Men’s final was on at the same time as the NFL games

Women's final was also clashed with College Football which also attracts huge numbers on TV. On Thursday, Women's Semifinals clashed with NFL opening game of season(which did involve Cowboys and Brady) and it drew around 1.45M. On Friday, when there was no NFL and basically no College Football (other than couple of games), Men's Semi Finals attracted around 1.75M.

Considering, one of the top2 greatest players of all time is going for such historical records, it's kinda unexpected that a Women's final involving 2 players ranked outside top50 who aren't even Americans have drawn better ratings. This is not a first time though. Even in some of recent years, Women's finals did draw better ratings than Men's finals in US. Even last year, Women's final had better ratings than Men's final.

you better shut your phuck up

I kept saying the media is not covering the men’s and folks kept saying ‘Wait , it will gather momentum’

I am still waiting

This is basically the western media not recognizing the greatness of Djokovic

OP Pls explain why men’s semi final had a higher draw with the same Djokovic?

finals- once they know the dishwasher was dominating, people would have moved on. There is no motivation to see Medvedev win because he has no personality or attractive game.

Men's Semifinal wasn't going up against anything...not even College Football (most of College football games happen on Saturday) whereas Women's semifinal was directly clashing with NFL's opening game of the season which is like one of the top10 sporting games (ratings wise) in US in the entire year. Still, it did draw 1.45M, whereas Men's SF drew 1.75M. This is not the first time women's finals had better ratings. Women's finals had better ratings than Men's finals in last 3 years but atleast those involved Serena, Naomi. This was a final between 2 teenagers ranked outside top50 whereas Novak was going for tennis history against No2 player in the world.

HA. Where are all those trolls who said the viewership for the men's final for history would be way higher and I said the WTA had the best final?

Vindicated.

If it was Federer or Nadal in the final the ATP would have won easily. But Djokovic is not a draw at all for mainstream folks. Most have never heard of him.

Ok then. How about making the ATP and WTA seperate tours then hm? Instead of having each slam and event be played at the same time with both men/women. Let's see if having 2 completely seperate weeks for each event has the same viewing figures for all rounds, not just a final.

Also viewership for this paticular final had a bonus because it was two young girls from big sporting countries and also the WTA final was streamed on a British TV channel here (Channel 4) which is avalible to anyone and the Men's final? No such luck. I had to resort to paid amazon prime to watch it. It wasn't on normal tv, so that CLEARLY had an impact on viewing figures here.

Nadal ?? Seriously haha

Comparing Federer with Nadal in terms of popularity ?? Lol

Federer is 10 tiers ahead of other tennis player in terms of popularity .....

Even , Djokovic makes more money than Nadal via endorsements always . Hahaha
And Federer makes the most via Endorsement .

You Hateful comments towards Djokovic proves that it was a Good Job by Djoker to stop Nadal at RG , Djokovic made sure Federer will always be ahead of Nadal if both end at 20 slams ..:D

Not sure how this is the WTA's fault that both ladies were from big nations? Doesn't that just show the failings on the men's side that no American, British or Canadian men are making slam finals? The men's final wasn't available for you for free because the broadcasters knew it wouldn't rate well so didn't bother paying and promoting it but knew the women's would be box office and it was. It's like here in Australia, the Wimbledon final was hugely promoted as Barty was in the final, Djokovic/Berrettini final did not draw the same hype.

OP will continue to watch WTA all his life .... LOL

Radicanu and medvedev were both amazing and very dominant throughout the tournament. The best of five format ultimately hurt djokovic since he was on court much more than med. Med claimed to be cramping up at the end. Djokovic legs were also done halfway through the match.

You're right in that its not the WTA's fault that it wasn't shown but its the same thing that happens with the ITV4 coverage here in the UK. They show like 90% WTA an 10% ATP and then talk about how the women's tour is more popular. It's because of what is being shown to the general public. Casual fans are not like us on this forum, they are not going to pay to actively watch year-round tennis but they will passively watch what is shown on TV and that messes with what i consider are the true ratings.

I obviously don't speak for US/Australian coverage but i can absolutely confirm it for UK coverage. It's especially true if there is no British ATP player playing such as Murray/Edmund and i think i've visually witnessed Heather Watson lose every single match over the last 3 years because they always show her. Why? Coz British.

here in US, you have to pay to watch ESPN. It's not free to air. USopen used to be carried by CBS. But no free to air channels carry tennis anymore. Infact ESPN dropped French open from their roster . Noody even wants to watch french open anymore. There is one particular player who single handedly managed to kill it.

You seem pretty ignorant lol, the French Open is still very much broadcast on "free to air" NBC :giggle:

I think many tennis fans are sick of the same players over and over again on the woman’s WTA. The men’s game is much different! There is alway new blood coming in and current ATP stars-players in intriguing matches. Until the U.S. Open the U.S. tennis channels had to over hype the matches and if it involve an U.S. player they just go overboard to promote that player. There were no so called big name stars: Serena/Venus, Jennifer Brady, etc… but it had the highest ratings even with Thursday night .Bucs vs. Cowboys game on!

Now is the time to have separate women's slam and leave ATP out. They know they won't because there will be total of 12 people including organizers and referees who will bother to attend.

the men's final goes up against non-cable NFL games (the most popular sport in the US by a wide margin).

Ben conveniently neglects the men’s ratings outpaced the women this year in the semifinals for the first time in the past 7 years.

It’s no coincidence this was the first time the women’s semifinals did not include an American woman. It’s typically included multiple American women, once all 4 semi finalists.
Not just no American women...it also only had just 1 top15 player in Semifinalists who isn't even that popular and couple of teenagers whereas Men's Semifinal lineup included all 3 pre-tournament favs + storyline of Novak going for history. This is also first time in ages where there wasn't an American Woman in QF. Women's Semifinals was also up against NFL opening game of season which had like 20M+ viewers whereas Men's Semifinals didn't really have any competition on Friday. Considering all this, Women's SF still drew 1.45M whereas Men's SF drew 1.75M. I expect Men's ratings to increase in next few years though once the current young American men's tennis gen (which does look promising) can breakthrough into top10. Other than top stars, having promising local players really helps with tv ratings.

Always so snide about everything. He's become insufferable.

I recall using a similar excuse for why the women’s final at the Aus Open doesn’t do well against the men’s final e.g. Saturday v Sunday and yet I was ridiculed. Funny that. Also, the final outviewed in many other countries, not just the US

Well, one thing to note, Raducanu won the tournament. Djokovic did not. Look at Fernandez, she lost and searches dropped precipitously.

Also, this data indicates that we probably don't want to pay players based on ratings, searches, etc., Mr. Gilles Simon.

Every men's final held on a Sunday for the past 55 years has been played during NFL games.
And over the last 55 years the NFL has only gotten astronomically more popular each decade while tennis has been declining.

Going against NFL Opening day in 2021 means a lot more than it did in 1971.

Lot's of these searches for Raducanu were also attributed due to her being unknown and people wanting to know more about here whereas Djokovic was known for decades now so there was no need to search him up.
