Indian Wells incredible prize money!

I just saw ATP updated new calendar on there website, with prize money and everything (except grand slams).

Every masters 1000 and 500 increased prize money, which was expected, but then I saw Indian Wells prize money... OMG!! Usually Indian Wells and Miami have same prize money, but this time is sooo different.

http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Tournaments/Indian-Wells.aspx

I wonder if that is a mistake, cuz it's just unbelievable!

  • ---------Points-------Prize $
  • W ------1,000-------1,000,000
  • F -------600--------500,000
  • SF-------360--------200,000
  • QF-------180 -------100,000
  • R16-------90--------43,520
  • R32-------45--------23,291
  • R64-------25--------12,725
  • R96-------10--------7,709

It's not outside the realms of possibility, Dubai is merely a 500 event. It's no coincidence most big name players attend that event.

Miami was always recognized as the 5th slam, if there were to be one.

It's funny when people bring up records like prize money earned. The fact that you're getting a million to win a 2nd tier event is crazy.

Sampras won 300k when he won the USO in 95. Now you get 3x that for winning Indian wells.

Good for the players I guess, Larry Elison is just rolling in the cake, hawkeye on everycourt, record prize money....nice...

I'd rather redistribute the wealth to losers in the other stages. The types of players who win MS titles don't need the extra moolah.

Why were there only 5 Masters events in that poll?

Where was Cincy, the 'real' 5th slam??

No this sort of prize money is no mistake. There is Huge money in tennis..to be made and to be won. And so instead of posting here, pick up your rackets and practice 8 hours a day. Forget the degree.

True, but the prize money has been increasing.

Pete won 575,000 dollars for winning the USO in 1995, not 300,000. 575,000 dollars in 1995 would be worth about 810,000 dollars in 2010.

Nadal won 1,700,000 dollars for winning the US Open in 2010.

and risk the high possibility of turning out to be a journeymen and then having to coach a high school tennis team for the rest of your life.

Larry Ellison coming to the tennis scene might be one of the best things to happen.

He's like the 5th richest man in the world, so that number seems quite affordable.

Though I agree that the prize money could be better distributed to the losers of earlier stages. Would only strengthen Indian Well's position as the unnoficial "5th Slam".

I don't think Ellison is setting up a charity here. He wants the players to put on the best show possible and fight for that big prize money.:)

you consider IW a second tier event? I mean, I guess if you say only the slams are "top tier" then yes, but it's definitely one of the elite, if not #6 or #7

Yep, thats half a million more than others offer.

IW is a top of the line tournament. Been there every year for the past 4 years so I know what I am talking about.
Maybe the only tournament that ALL the courts now use hawkeye.
Beautiful setting. Best views, Larry E was sitting 5 seats to my left.

The center court is second to USO and let me tell ya, it has much better views for everyone

Did you find out who the female with him was? Lots of speculation about that here.

some ppl have self-respect, can't knock them for that, can you?

If you are a top pro tennis player you should show up for this big event. The WS owe it to the fans...they paid overpriced tickets. Any big fan of them would be disappointing when they don't play while the rest of the field are playing.

How old is indian wells tourney?

Started in 1974 but was held at various locations before settling at IW:

Tucson 1974-5
Palm Springs 1976-8
Rancho Mirage 1979-80
La Quinta 1981-6
Indian Wells 1987-present

Thanks for correcting me, I wasn't sure exactly, but I knew it was in that 3-600k range.

He's not in the top 5 in the world. I can tell you that much.

He's only the 3rd richest in the US.

I bet IW has not increased umpire pay though.

IW has had the same umpire pay for a long time. $105 per day (except for the middle 5 days when the days are longer, it's $125 per day). Pitiful.

i stand by my comments....it's called a free society, they shouldn't be forced to do anything, last i checked fed, djoker, nadal etc pick what tournaments they want or not, do they play every week....thought so.
point2- their real fans know they are adults who have free will and respect that.
point3- how are the overpriced tickets their fault, i would say its the tourney director's fault. ***** to them.
point4- by letting theothers play they give them a chance, aren't you one of the ppl who says all-ws finals are boring, so you have nothing to complain about. besides isn't iw the 5th slam, well it gives wozzy a chance to win one.

Yes, I'm pretty sure all WS fans realize that they are not going to be at Indian Wells. So how the heck can this poster claim the WS responsible for the ticket prices there, LOL.

I think the WS' boycott lost the tournament a lot of money in the early 2000's. Good for them.

They chose to be a pro tennis player and should follow along with the rest of the field by playing tennis. Skipping events and then she and her fans complain about why she ranked so low is absurd. And then get all jealous about Jankovic/Safina/Caro for holding the #1 ranking. Nole/Nadal/Fed played a lot of tennis and no one is complaining about their respective ranking.

Yeah, my opinion is the WS final are boring, but that has nothing to do with their obligation. Unless you are injured, IW is expected all the top players to be there. The WS are the only players boycotting the event.

WRONG.

Since the absence of the WS in 2001, IW has become one of the most successful event on the atp tour.

Yes. It's up to them whether they want to play or not, and as fans we should respect their decision either way. There is definitely incentive for them to play, both financial, and in terms of ranking point. If they prefer not to play despite that, that is their choice. As fans, our choice is how important it is to us to see them play, and whether we are willing to pay to attent a tournment that they are not participating in.

Personally, I could care less if they are there or not. I go to IW most years, and for me the attraction is seeing as many matches as possible on the outside courts. So I don't get to see the top players much anyway. I'd much rather see a match from close up on a smaller court between two 'lesser' players than see a top player from much further away in the stadium. Let's face it, even the 'lesser' players play fantastic tennis. I don't have to be watching a 'name' in order to appreciate the level of play.

As for the price of tickets, I think IW grounds passes are one of the best deals in sports.

Are you talking about the WTA? I don't follow it as closely so don't know if what you're saying is correct or not but for the ATP, you're wrong. It is one of the tournaments they are mandated to play or they are penalized. The men don't have a choice when it comes to Masters tournaments and they have to play both IW and Miami.

As far as money goes, tennis players earn peanuts compared to many other sports. Golfers earn far more, professional poker players make the ATP guys look like chumps when it comes to earnings, NASCAR drivers earn a ton more, baseball players get tens of millions a year...I could go down the list and tennis players would be near the bottom.

No... I said it's up to them whether they want to play or not. And it is... if they decide not to play, then they are subject to the point-loss and other penalties imposed by the ATP as you say. But this is still a choice they are able to make.
