It looks like a good draw for Federer until the QF (Almagro,Robredo/Ljubicic/Tipsarevic).
Roddick-Murray could play in 4th round and the winner would get Federer in the QF.
Possible Murray-Safin in 2nd round. Nalbandian or Davydenko could play Federer in the SF.
Roddick could play Haas and Verdasco in his first 2 matches.

Djokovic is on Nadal´s half of the draw so they could play in the SF. Ferrer,Cañas,Berdych and Kohlschreiber are on his quarter.

Nadal could play Lopez or Young in 3rd round, Tsonga or Mathieu in 4th, Blake,Gasquet or Moya in the QF, Djokovic or Ferrer in the SF.

All the tough players on Nadal's side of the draw. Ferrer, Djokovic, Blake, Tsonga, and etc.

Stop crying, it's the luck of the draw. Nadal may not have to play half those players, let the draw unfold, it should be an exciting tournament. I didn't hear that during the Australian Open.

Wow, Federer has a cake-walk to the Finals. Murray could pose a problem along the way, but with his on and off again game, he might not even make it that far to see Fed.

As much as I was impressed by Roddick lately...if it's Roddick vs Federer, we all know how that'll turn out.

Also, aside from Nalby (who'll have a tough enough time to get to the SF), there's no one that part of the draw to give Fed problems. It's a prime position for him to rack up the points (considering his early exit last year). Anything less than a finals appearance should be a disappointment.

Personally, I'm hoping Baghdatis and Ancic can make some noise...they need to make a comeback in the worst way.

Ancic Ancic Ancic but I'm glad Gael is back.

Obviously this draw is not rigged but Nadal's draw does suck something fierce, especially considering he has to defend.

Fed has some toughies on his side too. Murray, Roddick, Nalbandian, Gonzo, Tipsarevic. Doesn't look like a cakewalk for anybody.

Won't be easy but I'd still make Federer favourite for the title. With Nadal's draw he's going to lose serious points and with Federer in a good position to get match practice and take home the title we're probably looking at 1000 point difference again after this.

hmm, would it be that easy ? In 2008, he basically "trained" about 2 weeks plus some matches in AO. i think first few rounds can be tricky...

if i were Federer, i would take it easy a bit considering mono he recovered from. mario hurried getting back to tour in full force only to injure his shoulder.....

Anyone look at qualies?

Nishikori into the second round along with Haase. Our boy Anderson plays Economidis later today. Scoville Jenkins came out of wherever he has been. And Hrbaty? Who is that? I thought he retired. Anyway, he lost to Odesnik.

Are we talking about luck on tennis?? All luck mostly given to seeded players and they of course will get a good draw.

Federer's got a peach draw, particularly for him. Having his reliable old whipping boy there has to be a some sort of comfort for him after his last two losses.

I like Roddick and he is in excellent form, but after years of waiting for him to turn that corner against Fed, I won't get my hopes up just because Roger suffered mono a couple months back. Plus, he might have to get by Murray first.

Nalby should be the other one in that semi, but he is coming off a win on clay, so don't know if his form will hold up. Otherwise it is kind of a pick 'em quarter.

Djokovic's isn't so bad, although he'll probably have to play better than in Dubai.

Nadal has some folks who could give him a lot of trouble, even as early as his second match. His best bud F. Lo finished runner-up, and should Rafa get past him he'll have to face Tsonga possibly. But his "bad" draws often seem to pan-out better for him.

Gotta like Federer's chances to secure the #1 for a little while longer, since he is only defending second-round points and Rafa is defending a win. But if Nadal somehow, miraculously finds his form and gets to the final, or more miraculously, actually defends his title, even Fedheads and Jokers will have to give him some credit.

Still, it looks very unlikely right now.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHA what's so notable about Roddick playing Haas and Verdasco in his first two matches!??!?!?!

why is Fed even playing? if he has mono why not just rest and/or practice and give up the 5 points?

I love what you've said, Aabye. :) Good points.

I'm hoping Berdych, Baghdatis and Blake can make some noise at this tournament.

Nadal's bad draws never turn out as bad as they originally seem because the big flat hitters that trouble him are usually wildly inconsistent. The Blake's, Berdych's , and Youzhny's of the tennis world always seem to make a really strong run in a tournament or go out early

Looks like it is going to be quite an exciting tournament. And with all the fuss about Fed losing his number one spot; it seems like all the players will be trying to make a big move here.

He "had" mono. He's supposedly recovered from it.

Symptoms of mono can vary widly, I heard. He is medically "cleared" by doctors (which simply means he has enough antibody and his spleen looks "normal"). But he still has this uncomfortable uncertainties over his fitness level. It can linger (or even reoccurre) for months or even a year or two (even after patients are cleared by doctor) in some extreme cases. Therefore, there is no clear medical guideance on "full" recovery time, as far as I know.

^ The key word there is "supposedly."

Federer: Well guys, after winning 12 grand slams and breaking dozens of records, I think we need to come up with some medical excuse for my 2 losses this year... because I care about what the American public thinks about me.

Federer's posse: Yea, how about mono. We will just make up that you had mono so people will still think you're a good tennis player.

Federer: Ok good, now that the American public thinks I am still good, I can sleep at night.

Yea.... that's what happened... sigh at naive Americans..

^^^ That's definitely how it went down. If Fed just had mono why would he put himself through the troulbe of playing a 3-set match against Sampras that doesn't even count towards the ranking. I know he got a hefty appearance fee but if he was really sick and has reoccuring symptoms than he should not risk his health just for some money.

...and therefore, he will have an excuse for any losses he has in the next 2 years...

Isn't Ancic an example of that?
