Indian Wells - Palm Springs

I'm planing to visit BNP Paribas Open tournament in Indian Wells. Is it OK to stay at Palm Springs and travel to the tournament every day? Is there any public transportation available? I also found Plaza Racquet Club website, did anyone play there? Thanks :) .

I don't recall seeing public transportation going to the site, I vaguely recall a few bus stops on Washington Blvd but that's it.

Depends on where you are in Palm Springs, but it's not too far away, say 20 - 30 minutes depending if the lights on Hwy 111 are in your favor.

There is very little public transportation in the desert...the only agency, Sunline Transit does run a bus along Hwy 111 but it is not very frequent and a ride from Palm Springs to IW would cost you a dollar but take you over an hour. Rent a car if you can and save yourself the hassle of dealing with our inadequate public transportation system. :)

what are the upper seats like at the indian wells main stadium?

I ask because the lower seats are pricey.....

is it worth watching from the uppers? or better on tv?

Always better to be there live. Usually spend most of the time on other courts. But the view from the top of the main stadium is pretty small, best with some sport binoculars.

I'm not a big fan of watching from the cheap seats in the main stadium. You can see the whole court, but it is very much an experience of looking down onto a tennis court.

During the first week you can get great seats on the outer courts. However, it seems Rafa and Federer never play on the outer courts.

They stink... too far away to really enjoy the action. Plus you get some obnoxious/rowdy people and noisy families with small children up in those sections.

Get lower seats if you can afford the extra dough.

Agree with Bud, the upper seats at the main stadium blows. Terrible and you can't see anything except the nearby mountains.

Thanks for the insight all

One last question, on that opening sat and Sunday, round 2, do the big names like rafa or fed play in the day session, night, or random?

Thx

I have been to Indian Wells twice. I always go Mon, Tues, Wed. That is when the big names start playing. You won't see them the previous weekend, IIRC.

In general, the big names play in the stadium, day or night session. I have found that on those days there is always awesome stuff on the outer courts.

FWIW, I think watching tennis from the cheap seats is not worth it. I go to Indian Wells only every three years because it would be too expensive to do it the way I want to do it going more frequently.

There is no problem staying in Palm Springs, it's not that far from the Garden.
Not sure about public trans., it's better to rent a car because there are many fine resturants, shopping and casino's to visit.
If you want to play tennis while your there, there are many places to play for free. The public parks, colleges and local high school courts are plenty and located through out the Desert.

I find it most enjoyable to watch the matches on the outer courts.

dress warm for night sessions. 85 degrees in day becomes 50 and chilly at sundown. can't wait to go once again this year.

Love love love Plaza Tennis, and will be in at Indian Wells at the same time this year. If you want to hit at Plaza, give me a shout!

ya got that right, as soon as the sun goes down it cools off.

How warm should you dress?

The first time, I froze my butt off. We took the blankets from the hotel. It was that cold.

The second time, it wasn't as bad. We dressed for hot weather during the day and then took the shuttle back to the hotel to suit up for night. I brought my cold weather running jacket and lots of layers. I did not bring hat or gloves, but others in our group did. Only on the last evening was it warm enough to survive in shorts -- that session lasted until 1 am and I would have had to bail had it gone even one minute longer.

Regarding day weather, there was only one day out of the six days I attended where I thought it was uncomfortably hot. The cold is by far the bigger issue, but the cold is fine if you dress for it.

Yippie! I am all booked and ready to go!

Flying into LAX, renting a car, staying at the gorgeous La Quinta and just bought the courtside mid-week package. Can't wait for it to kick off!!
