Indian Wells pre qually

I see several familiar SoCal jr. names in the Indian Wells Pre Qually tourney, including the one that gets the most mention in this forum, line 102.

Anybody else see familiar names? I'm curious to see how they do and hope they do well.

JM, the dude has no points and has only made 2 main draws for futures, one as a LL. That said, he does have a 9 wins is qually draws, including one against Gerst who has a blog on this forum and is a former D1 trying to go pro. So a win wouldn't totally shock me but i would bet the other way.

I agree. A loss for D is likely, just considering nerves and the experience factor. I would say 3 and 3 would be a good showing.

You are right. I did not understand what I was reading.

He has won a few rounds in qualifying. I still bet he is better than the usual low ranked 18s that play in SoCal designateds.

Actually, he has been ranked as high as the 800s in the past. If you guys adjust the time period for his activity back to '08, he made 1 F, and 1 S in Futures in Ecuador.

You don't have to count the lines. The players all have numbers next to their names.

Click on the link in the OP. Then click the Men's Draw link on the right. Find the kid who gets more talk than any other on this board, with the number 102 next to his name.

I will be very happy when D moves on and tennis is out of the question for him because of one thing. You guessed it~~the pops! If this kids dad was not in the picture he could have had the potential to advance in tennis. Instead his father is nOthing more than a press agent trying to bring as much attention to his situation as possible. I sure have noticed a huge similarity in the antics if the Baloon Boys dad the tennis players dad and the crazy cooky Charlie Sheen. What is really in the water down there in LA? I would bet my cat that many more doors would have opened for the Baughman boy if nit for the dad. He ruined a possible good thing with a big mouth! I hope this boy gets out and never looks back at the life his father forced on him. Why does tennis seem to have the highest number of parents trying to retire from the kids game? The dad's aggressive personality got the boy some time with Nick B. and some time with the top USTA coaches. There are hundreds of more talented and/or higher ranked boys aged 12-18 who never got those chances.

As SoCal said, the stuff about going to the pros is most likely just him trying to give the kid confidence. He should be commended for putting a boy without much natural athletic ability into position to possibly go to college for free.

That can't be fun for Rivera to see some kid you have to play. The pressure is all on the older player who is expected to win and the kids can just go for every shot. I see so many 18s get tight when they have to play some 13 or 14 year old who is playing up.

Roman is really solid and is always doing really well at the biggest open events around the nation. Aj has a huge serve and I played him at the regional us open national playoffs last summer and won in straight sets. Kevin Kylar is a pretty good Winnipeg junior Ive played a few times.

I saw Roman Borvanov play in Sarasota a few years ago. Very nice player. That challenger was also the first time I saw Bernard Tomic play in person.

The 'plan' sure is silly. He could be playing solid 16s and get a few great matches every weekend, or this nonsense.....play some journeyman player who probably is bored silly and a little embarrassed to be playing some kid and playing half speed, and be out in 45 minutes.

Funny thing is, not sure what the entry fee was, but the dad could have tossed that guy 50 bucks and he would have probably hit with the kid for a few hours.

TCF I usually agree with you but 6-4 6-3 is not a bad score. Sure in the pros thats a one sided match but generally in juniors 6-4 6-3 is a very close match since serves are not such a huge deal. Just the same in pros its rare to see a score like 6-2 or a set with more than 2 breaks when the players are pretty close to each other but in juniors 6-0s between close players are not uncommon. They just dont have the same focus to play conistently and win almost every game on serve.

I recently found out another Boys Junior was playing in this pre-qualifing tourney. His opponent retired from injury the first round and then he cam up against the no. 1 entry and lost 6-1 and 6-4.

Here is the recent pre-qual from the smaller San Jose SAP Open in Feb. Some NorCal juniors played in this. Rudolf Siwi (or is that Siwy?) also did well in this one:

Just to put this in perspective...the 4 pre-qual winners lost in either the 1st or 2nd round of the qualify tournament (which had 3 rounds). The 4 qualifiers all lost in the first round of the main draw (though some matches were close).

Life is tough at the pro level....

Without going through each of your statements in general I disagree. You're spot on about the "massage therapist". The entire subject is quite painful to see. However it does not stop the rubberneckers, of which I'm one of them. I feel for the kid and hope the therapist gets some relevant therapy of his own. Narcissists can get help.

The fact is that every top current 100 pro was a prodigy, trashing even talented older boys, winning top ITFs, futures, challengers, Orange Bowls, etc. Tomic, Monfils, Nadal, Djorkovic and every example the dad makes comparison too, all were blowing top 18s off the court by age 14-15.

So I will not play PC and spout this "nobody knows" nonsense. We know, we see the slow feet, we see the results. It is what it is. Not buying into the dad's delusion is not hating on the kid.

I would not ask IMG or anyone else to spend a dime on him because I think he could be a money making pro.

BUT, I would vigorously recommend him to ANY college program in the land. I see his hard work, heard he plays smart tennis, decent forehand....I would write a personal letter or call any of the college coaches I know. Some of the better programs he would not play 1-2 position, but I would gladly recommend that they offer him a scholarship based on strong character, hard work, etc.

If thats hate to go out on a limb to try and get the kid a full ride to college, then my definition of hate is different than others.

It's pretty simple, really. If you promote and brag about your kid on the internet, you're going to have to deal with criticism, especially if you do it in an outlandish way. It's clear to me that most of the negative comments are aimed at the dad.

Personally, I think it's all his ego. If my kid were a exceptional standout player, I'd be trying to teach him how to stay humble, grounded and deal with the attention that would come his way out of winning/results, and not be on the internet trying to conjure up (negative) attention to heap on top.

wont play tennis in college, new rule has an age restriction i think. who knows how smart the kid is.
