Indian Wells Super Challenger next week

I think, if memory serves me correctly, he only won 5 return points in the entire 1st set, that's including the one mini-break he was up in the early part of the tiebreaker.

Seems like Sock was being hyper aggressive on the return... maybe he needs to pull back a bit and get more in play. Make the younger, less experienced guy do something special.

I wish they were posting the serve speeds. Nakashima has a nice serve motion, but most pros do. I'm having a hard time telling whether his serve is that good or Sock is just taking the wrong tactic on return.

Triple break point for Sock. Wow. Didn't see that coming.

Edit: and there's the first break of the match.

Sloppy double by Sock at 30-30 to give Nakashima a break point, but he followed it up with a great serve wide on the ad side to save it.

BTW, I could hear some negative self-talk by Sock in that last game. However, it wasn't peppered with foul language like I've heard from him in the past when he's played poorly. Maybe that is something he's tried to work on.

That last game got really interesting... but Sock holds to win the 2nd set 6-3.

Who do you think will win the 3rd set?

Feels to me like Sock got very lucky to get the break in the 2nd.

Nakashima up 3-2, on serve.

At this point, Sock has 9 double faults and is only winning 44% of his second serve points. 0-15 right now...

Two more aces, a great reaction to a let cord passing shot, another big serve, and a huge forehand to get Sock back from 0-40 to a hold and 5-3 lead!

Wow, wrote my previous at 0-15. Felt like a genius at triple break point. Feel like an idiot after 5 consecutive Sock points.

He was fortunate to escape from that game, especially with the let cord that Nakashima had on that passing shot.

5-4, Sock serving for the match.

Sock wins it!

Should be a good rematch with Johnson in the finals. Steve beat him in three sets just a couple weeks ago in Delray Beach, but Sock seems to be moving better and playing with more confidence now. Sock leads their head-to-head 4-3. These courts and the altitude seem to favor Sock's game, but this is basically a home court tournament for Johnson. Should be a good match!

Nakashima looks solid. Backhand could be a weapon. Serve seems pretty good. Not sure about his movement, especially over 5 sets against a better returner, but he did well today.

It's great to see Jack Sock back in decent form. I was never a huge fan of his style in the past, but after having not seen him in a long time on the main tour I have come to realise that he is quite entertaining to watch.

Amazing net skills, outrageous Americanised forehand with more RPM then anyone on tour, and a nifty spin-loaded serve with great placement. It's very much an American style game that is shared among his contemporaries but he has made it unique in his own way. Stands out more then Johnson, Querrey, Harrison etc.

Try again. IW is basically sea level (89 feet). You have to go to nearby Palm Desert to reach nosebleed 220’ or Palm Springs at 479’.

Oh, wow... that's interesting. I've played in both Las Vegas and Indian Wells, and they felt the same to me in terms of thinner air and higher than normal bounces. I assumed that they were similar elevation, but you are correct... Vegas is 2,000 feet and Indian Wells is less than 100. I suppose that it has more to do with the arid environment, heat, and the gritty-ness of the Indian Wells courts that make it similar. In my experience, Indian Wells had some of the slowest hard courts I had played on. I think that would be good for Sock's game because it would accentuate his spins and give him more time to run around to use his forehand.

Johnson won the title 4,4 but for Sock, he has gone up from 384 to around 371, gaining 75 ranking points for being a finalist!

Actually, ackshually (sorry), he's up 384 spots from 768th position this last week. He quite literally halved his ranking 384 spots to 384.
